My dad is 80 years old and he is a COPD patient. He has been diagnosed with sepsis and has been taking levofloxacin for 5 days now.
Apart from having depression after the drug and dizziness he has a problem with excess mucus in his throat.
He tries to cough to clear his throat with no success, previously he used to have theophylline for it
But now it seems these two drugs together should not be taken as a high risk of seizure.
Anything you recommend to use please?
Levofloxacin for COPD and its conflict with theophylline?

Dear hmira - is your dad in the hospital for sepsis treatment? I am an 83 year old copd patient. Female, in stage 4 of copd. Correct - those two drugs should not ever be taken together for reason you state and others as well. Theophylline for throat mucus? I don't think so! This drug not advised for mucus reduction, if taken alone for that. I have no mucus in my lungs, nor throat ever. My lung fields are clear. Neither do I get lung infections nor have bronchitis
for more than a decade. An alternate. Non pharmacological therapy acknowledged and used
by some hospitals, doctors for the clearance from the lungs of excess mucus is n-acetyl-
cysteine. What a hospital dosage is I do not know and I believe it is given via an i. V. By myself, at home, I take 900 mgs in capsule form on an empty stomach in the morning and the same dose before bedtime. Drink with 6 to 8 oz water. Do not buy a product with fillers. Gradually over weeks there ought to be a difference. Very important to eliminate all mucus forming foods. Milk products, bananas, white potatoes, white rice, breads. The importance of citrus fruits and natural sugars in them. The importance of green fresh vegetables and garlic, onions/scallions. The importance of liquids / hydration to liqufy mucus. The elimination of all artificial sugars such as donuts, cake, cookies and candies and all sodas. Non fried foods. Fish like salmon or herring or sardines favorable over beef, pork, lamb. Without knowing the state of your fathers condition and many deciding details I can not proceed further with more suggestions. I do know that levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone
drug that wrecks havoc on the human body. There are alternate drugs to combat sepsis. If you do try n-acetyl- cysteine and follow a food change please know that a lesser dose of than 900 will not be effective enough for a strong mucus problem, as it is sold in 600 mgs capsules also. You might want to try chest percussion to dislodge sticky mucus, also a suction devise to do the same and ph banced saline solution nasal sprays to blow out loosened mucus. Every different attempt at this problem you can consider to be a further benefit for your dad. Good luck with all this. Charlett hobart
Just ran across this. Wonder if that would help my mom with her mucus from COPD stage 3
