I pretty much tried other stuff. But I have a very high tolerance to medication. Also some meds will affect me totally opposite than what they intend. As in being more hyper than I am already. I have problems with sleeping, and I get in a very miserable mood gets worse with less sleep. I believe that I need 8 hours of sleep. I feel so much better when I get good sleep.
Is there anything other than Seroquel that would help me to sleep?

I'm on ambien and trazadone and it used to work but now I can't sleep at all, and I am tried rozerem and that did'nt work I bought vitimins with promote sleep on it and that did'nt help. I am desp for a good night sleep I only sleep 3-4 hrs a night. How long can someone go like that? I even contacted a sleep clinic to see if I could join a sleep study and find the problem.
Sounds like you are alot like me. Alot of drugs do just the opposite on me as well such as Benadryl. Instead of putting me to sleep I get EXTREMELY hyper. I can litterly stay up for 4 days straight on one capsule. Have you tried Amitryptiline at all? 50mg plus 2mg Ativan seems to help me some. Also some people have luck with Trazadone (Desyrel). Not me but alot have success with it. Good luck and hope this suggestion helps. Good night.
Have you tried Risteril, or the generic is Temazepam. It is a light benzo, I take 30mgs at night, it helps with anxiety and I sleep very well on it. Also, at the store, you can buy a product called Alteril, it contains melatonin, valerian and one other natural substance, cant remember it. Take it one hour before bed and you will feel a need to go to sleep. I love it.
I do stay away from ambien, I'm one of those who sleepwalk and do stuff in my sleep I don't remember the next day, it's a trip I don't like!
Best of luck to you,
Sheryl
Also, I know many doctors prescribe seroquel for sleep, and that completely disturbs me. This is a medicine to treat psychosis. Someone tell me how a psychotic condition and insomnia relate? Same thing with Trazedone. It is an old antidepressant. Why would I want to put another A/D in my body to mix with my Effexor just to help me sleep? It doesn't help me sleep anyway, it gives me anxiety attacks. Some of these combinations that many people are taking really concern me. I'm trying to take as few medications as possible, I'm down to 3 from 8 and one day I hope to be med-free, but I'm also 51 and other problems usually begin around my age (crap!).
Let's keep conversing on this subject, it is very interesting and important to our health. I'm learning much from reading all your replies.

Thanks, rockermom51, for telling the truth about Seroquel. Temazepam is the best of the benzos. Vistoril is generally well-tolerated and works well. I've tried both and had good success, for a while. I have had the best long-term results with 0.1mg of Clonidine. Seroquel is not approved for dispensation to relieve insomnia or low-level depression. A doctor is out of line to prescribe it so freely. I developed tardive akisthesia while taking it(acute).
I can understand being miserable when you dont get enough sleep. I kept a sleep diary so my physician could see how much sleep I was getting per night. On an average I would get about 2 - 3 hours a night and the next day I was very moody and tired. My physician tried several different medications. Finally tried me on Resteriol 15mg at bedtime and this has helped me to get a good 8 hours sleep. You might talk to your physician about this medication and see what his recommendation is for you. I hope you are able to find something that will work for you so you will be able to get some rest and get back to waking up and feeling rested. Sandy
Well to be honest with you I personally have lots of trouble sleeping but i find it easier to go to sleep at night if i keep myself the whole day so that way when you do go to bed youll be exhausted.
I'm having issues with the number of medications I take so I am not currently taking my prescribed dosage of Wellbutrin SR, BuSpar and Seroquel XR. I have to meet with my psychologist and discuss things.
1. I don't feel any different off Wellbutrin SR as opposed to taking it. I felt in much better control of self and issues that I had while on Effexor XR. So I am hoping he will authorize the change for me.
2. I do feel edgy and anxious without my BuSpar,
3. I am suppose to take 1/2 tab in AM and 1 1/2 tab in PM or take 4 50 mg. of Seroquel XR. I was only comfortable taking 100 mg and then only because they were hard to halve.
Since, I am on only 8 of 18 medications because of diarrhea, severe nausea and vomiting.
My gastro and primary doctor have agreed that I should add 1 medication at a time for a week if no issues then add the rest until we hopefully discover why I am having issues taking all of my medications.
As to the insomnia problem I have gotten myself into a schedule and when my thoughts are racing too fast the Seroquel XR slowed them down so I could sleep. But, I really think putting yourself on a regular schedule of light activities for me, bedtime and rise time are usually 8 - 10 hours long. However, if I'm not feeling my best I can sleep through a whole day sometimes two. My primary said it was probably seasonal depression causing this.
Hi. I can relate to your insomnia and so can my husband. He has trouble falling asleep and I have that plus middle of the night awakenings. Seems like I had tried everything and have a high tolerance too. My dr finally put me on chloral hydrate. Its an old drug (very old)... but a good one. It knocks me out for a good 6-7 hrs. I read all of the responses you received and if you have kids or have to get up in the middle of the night and be awake and alert, I would not take this med. I truly think its a last resort kind of med.
My husband hasnt been going thru this for as long as I have. He takes Restoril and it works great for him. He has learned to take it on an empty stomach or it wont work at all.
Good luck!!
Risperdal helps with sleeping
I've had the same reaction to meds. For example, I tried Trazodone and my throat swelled up. That wasn't even listed as a possible side effect, but my sister had the same reaction. I also tried amitriptyline and it helped me sleep but gave me the munchies and horrible nightmares. What's worked the best for me has been Remeron (mirtazapine) at 15mg. It's actually supposed to help with "sleep architecture." My only problem is that it's been hard to get off of. I don't know if that's because I have an underlying sleep problem or if it's rebound insomnia from the drug. Good luck, friend.
Dear Amsel10, I feel for you! I too have always had difficulty sleeping as I can never seem to turn my mind off. I worry about everything, panic and sometimes feel like I'm going to jump right out of my skin! I was diagnosed with bi-polar several years ago and have taken just about ever drug out there. I am taking anti-depressants along with anti-psychotics to help stablize my mood. What I found that works the best for sleep is Xanax. 1 pill each night about 30 min before I want to sleep works like a charm. I can usually sleep all through the night and wake up feeling perfictly fine. Unlike the many types of sleeping pills Xanax does not make me groggy in the morning. The other pro to Xanax is if you should happen to wake up a few hours after you fall asleep you can take 1/2 a Xanax and still wake up the next morning (unlike sleeping pills). I hope this helps!
elavil is great not only for depression but it is great for sleep.it works better than ambien, leunesta,,dalmane, ive tried them all and i could not believe that a sleeping pill would have so little effectt
I think you should be relax. Don't get stressed out. It's a good way for sleeping well. Beside, there is a green health care device, that is seco low lever laser therapy. It is said it has a positive effect on insomnia and it hasn't found any side-effects. I hope it could help.
Best wishes!
Try asking your doctor about Vistaril. I have bipolar disorder and a sleeping disorder to boot. The vistaril helps out a lot. I also have allergies so I take some benedryl before bed. You could try that. Good Luck.
I took 150 mg of Trazodone for a short time (did not like it, made feel like I had a hangover in the morning! Talked to my nueorologist and he switched me to Limbitrol. I have it prescribed as Amtrip-CDP at the doe of 25-10, and this has worked better for me personally. I would talk to my doctor when meds don't seem to do what we discussed. BUT... be careful, My doctor wrote to stop the Trazadone and it ended up that I was supposed to titrate down and it triggered a siezure. There are so many meds for sleep out there, I would try something else (non narcotic) to use. Good luck!
I suffer from recurring insomnia. I had insomnia for around three months at a time and the drug paxil was the only medication that brought me out of it.I have tried trazodone, lunesta, temazepam, effexor, and Vistaril none of these would actually calm me enough to go to sleep.I took paxil for 4 days to a week and my mind can relax and I fall asleep and stay asleep at night.I've been on paxil for over 5 years and it has been a miracle medication for me.
