Is it just less effective, or could it be harmful?
Is it ok to use this product a year or two after the expiration date?

Tussin... a year or two ago it expired. There is a break down in the chemicals. Some of the chemicals can break down faster than others.
If you keep it in the bathroom the various tempatures and moisture can cause the medicine to break down faster. If it was me throw it out, it is not worth getting sick from it. Also you might not get better from your cold as fast as you should.
