I'm a 47 y/o female and was diagnosed with ADHD at age 6 but I did not take the meds, (can't remember why). At age 44 I decided to get tested and was diagnosed as having ADHD (of the inattentive type). I've also suffered from anxiety all of my life. Since beginning Adderall XR 15 mg, now 20 mg for 2 months, I have been experiencing muscle pain, cramping/tightening and weakness. Adderall changed my life for the better, (except for the pain if that's the cause). Not thinking that my pain was caused by this med my Dr. began sending me to one specialist after another, a Psychologist, 2 Psychiatrists, a Neuro Surgeon, a Spine Specialist, a Neurologist, and a Rheumatologist. All specialist say there is nothing wrong. I've had a CT scan, 4 MRIs, a nerve test and several X-Rays. All show no abnormalities. I've had 4 months of physical therapy, 1 yr. of Chiropractic care and spent thousands of dollars on in home equipment to ease the pain. Nothing has helped and I refuse to take pain relievers, I don't believe covering up the problem is the answer... Recently, I was told by my Rheumatologist that I had "Myofacial Pain". REALLY?! I'm no Dr. but I believe that was the reason WHY I made the appt. to see him. What I'd like to know is the cause of my pain... :/ Needless to say, I'm completely frustrated and becoming increasingly depressed. It hurts to do simple household chores, I rarely leave my home, and out of desperation I spend up to 10 hrs a day on the internet looking for answers. I'm beginning to wonder if the Adderall XR is the cause. Has anyone else experienced these issues while on this med? If so, what ADHD med were you switched to? PLEASE HELP!!! (Sorry for the lengthy question) Thanks!

I've never liked the XR's due to the delayed release of the medication. It would cause me not to sleep and If I didn't sleep while on this stuff I couldn't eat. I take a generic IR adderall 10mg and still deal with muscle cramping during physical activists like boxing and weight lifting and if I sit to long or sleep to long in the same position my muscles get tense. I think it has something to due with the way our food consumption changes while on the medication or the medication inhibits the body to absorb certain vitamins and minerals, like potassium.
I've been baffled and aggravated by this also because the medication really does make me preform my day to day life much better. Best advice I can give now is keep you tolerance low by skipping days or only take one dose a day after a meal when you start your day don't take the medication and then try to it. It's either a change in the diet or something in the medication that stops the body from being able to absorb essential vitamins and minerals that keeps the muscles from cramping. Definitely a common side effect of the medication.
Adderall flushes the salts out if your cells. You dont need more water you need something like Powerade to replace the salts. ( minerals, potassium, magnesium etc.) I drink one every afternoon and it helps with the pain of losing all the salts. Also it seems most doctors prescribe too high a dose of Adderall. I do better on half the prescribed amount.
I know this is an old post, but I wanted to comment and fill you in on my Adderall experience. I started taking the IR 40-50 mg. per day. (Started at 10 mg, then gradually upped the dosage) I have been on it daily, for going on 6 months . I did experience slight headaches and sleeplessness, when I first started the medication. (Those symptoms have faded away over time , although, on occasion I still get a headache here and there) My experiences with muscle weakness or tightening have just started this morning, it feels like I ran 20 miles! I drink a TON of water and use the restroom frequently. The only thing I can contribute this to is maybe the way I slept last night, or the fact that I've been scrubbing my carpets and doing a lot of yard work the last few days. As a RN, I can speculate that potassium is needed and maybe just some Ibprofen for any inflammation. I did eat two bananas this morning with my breakfast, and took a multivitamin, as well.
Dehydration will definitely cause muscle cramping and pain , so make sure you drink lots of water throughout the day/night. I also have found that essential oils such as lavender and eucalyptus will help with headaches, as well as rest! Make sure to drink fluids and rest, those are probably the most important aspects with taking Adderall! My legs are starting to feel better, so I pray this is short lived!
Got a question for you? Did you ever try the xr? I have iga and have borderline htn and I am on a arb for my kidneys. Nephrologist said it was ok to take but I have been taking the ir. He said to try the xr because he didn't think it would affect my b/p as much... Thoughts?
I created an account just so I could respond to anyone who reads this. 1. The doctors you all go to should be ashamed of themselves. I'm literally dumbfounded that no one took the time to do a simple blood draw. Adderrall dehydrates you. You are flushing your body by drinking tons of liquids all day. In doing so you are also depleting your magnesium. Start taking Magnesium Chelate. Muscle cramps and headaches will go away. I have to keep up with my magnesium or else I end up with charley horses and leg atrophy. Do a Google search if you want more substantiation. Good luck!!
I know this is an old post but after reading page after page of people not being able to figure out the curlation between Adderall, Vyvanse, etc. and muscle cramps THEN I saw your tip on magnesium!! I thought, "FINALLY, someone with the correct answer!" I have been taking 30 of Adderall off and on for a couple of years. About 3 weeks ago I was hurting so bad I started searching online and found that magnesium, or a shortage of magnesium due to the Adderall, was the problem. I immediately went to see if I had any in my cabinet and took 2 of the 250 mg right then. Within 30 min my ached went away! I couldn't believe it! Now I take one everyday so I won't get depleted anymore. I did have to do some digging online to find this out though. It should be on every warning label so people would know right away instead of being sent to specialist, being misdiagnosed, ect. What a shame! Anyway, just had comment... thanks!
That is so enlightening thank you. I have dealt with all the problems associated with adderall, I just literally stopped taking even though it helped, but your information helped me out a lot. Thanks

I agree... I take Adderall 30mg bid and at times experience severe muscle pain in hips and thighs... It feels like I just ran a couple miles or so... After much trial and error I discovered that taking Magnesium (400mg) will pretty much eliminate this pain. Results are fast as well. Most muscle pain is gone within 30 minutes of taking the Magnesium. Adderall also tends to throw my electrolytes out of balance so I also drink about 8-16oz. Gatorade daily. I am NOT a medical professional but this works for me. I hope it helps you!
This post is so helpful. I have been wondering about what has been going on with me? I just got prescribed the lowest dose of Generic Aderral and since the first time of taking it my body is extremely sore. My neck, shoulders, arms and knees are very sore. I had a a great day at work and School. Got a lot done without procrastinating. I am on the lowest dose of 10mg once a day and with in 2 hours of taking it I felt great. But after 5 hours passed I started to feel my body was aching. I am a pretty fit and active woman so having these kinds of body cramps is a new. I feel I am suffering with extreme Adrenal fatigue. What did you all figure out about your issues? Did anyone find a solution? Is it true that while on Aderrall it's helpful to take Magnesium? Has anyone tried any remedies ? Please write back. Thanks!
I too am a female who refused to take the drug until about 2-3 years ago. Even though I'm only in my twenties, I had been experiencing spine related problems before starting adderall. The drug intensified the pain and caused cramping in every muscle of my body. Honestly, the best trick is to drink enormous amounts of water before taking the pill and while feeling the affects. The water stops the muscles from cramping & keeps the pain to a minimum. Other things that I find help are working out regularly and going to the steam room/sauna. The steam room relaxes all your muscles and gives them a break from the tension that builds up and I find that it can have lasting results throughout the day. Honestly the best daily routine is:
Wake up, stretch/yoga, drink water, shower/eat breakfast with whole foods
Go to the gym, drink more water, hit the sauna/hot tub (swimming is a great work out for people with aches and pains, such as having "bad knees" or back pain)
Take the adderall & go to work or whatever you do with your day KEEP DRINKING WATER
Eat something with fiber in it during lunch time, stray away from juice at lunch because it can cause gas and other problems and your stomach is already sensitive from the adderall.
When you get home for the night, again drink more water & stretch. You've probably been sitting at a desk for most of the day and it's good to get the muscles moving, this is when I do yoga & it's done wonders for me.
I hope this can help someone, if you have more questions about it or a workout routine, just ask! Honestly I stressed it a lot but I can't stress it more. Drink water. It sounds too simple to be true but it works and it helps you lose weight.
You are dehydrated. Drink more water. Pain happens to me when I take 2 15mgs instant release amphetamine salts in a day. Usually in my hands like I have arthritis or carpal tunnel from using my iPhone. Right now it is in my elbow like a crazy case of tennis elbow/bursitis. Also I don't eat much on days leading up to the pain, and enjoy too many coca-colas. So yeah, drink some water.
I wanted to comment that I get the same impression as the person above regarding hydration. I'm a 44 year old male I've been on various doses from 10mg to 30mg 3 times a day after having my hyerparathyroid adenoma removed to help with the severe fatigue(15+ years tumor) the ache and weakness reminds me of the muscle fatigue and ache from lactic acid... For those of you that work out no doubt you're accustomed to this feel from morning after workout soreness. It reminds me of almost the same overall feeling as when you have a layoff from exercise/workouts and start back the second day soreness which seems the peak after a workout. Recently Im back to exercising to aid recovery(slow to start) and am walking about 5-6 miles a day every day since I got my Fitbit a week ago.
Honestly it's far worse I've noticed after I actually get a good/regenerative sleep so I am assuming that's when the body is trying to acting on the muscles.
It would be interesting to see if someone got their lactic acid levels measured when they are feeling this ache. Most days I can deal with it after my first dose when I wake 2-3 hours though to seemingly grind past the ache and get moving freely...
Last night I walked twice to make my second fitbit goal of 15000+ steps in a day which was 7.5 miles and right now as I write this I've been up about 2 hours and can barely walk took my aderall, ibuprofin and a extremely hot shower and am having a gatorade to see if the potassium and electrolytes help I assume if gatorade helps pedealite or similar would as well..
Not sure if this helps anyone else or your aches are similar to mine but I wish I had better answers because it is horrible having that "First day back in the gym ache" every single day... It becomes hard some days to have the will and drive to get up and grind through it and get out and walk for an hour to loosen it up..
One last thing as I know this has been wordy. Once I'm past it, an some days I admit I don't sleep much from the high doses of adderall I take but I have definitely noticed that if I only sleep a few hours and don't sleep well i.e. regenerative sleep I wake and don't feel the ache nearly as bad... Just something I noticed..Glad I found this as I was just chalking it up to my body being out of whack after 15+ years of extremely elevated calcium which plays a huge role in many of the neuromuscular functions of the body..

Exactly. People should google the wikihow "how to reduce lactic acid build up in muscles." Lactic acid is created after you burn through your daily energy stores. This makes sense especially if you are misdiagnosed and just enjoy taking speed.
My experience is the opposite. If I don't sleep well I can barely move and my heart beats irregularly (I take a beta blocker so I check it often) anyway you're causing damage to your body, binge exercising on top of stimulants. Be safe, you don't want rhabdomyolitis.
I have been on adderall for 5 weeks now. 15 mg of immediate release, twice a day. I am 32 in good health and moderately active. Since I started taking adderall I'm happy to say that my mind is finally able to focus. I am very happy with the drug, BUT I started experiencing muscle spasms in my legs and back after 2 weeks of taking it. Also, when I physically pushed myself harder than I normally would (raked two large yards full of leaves), I blew my back out the next day so severely that I was bed ridden. Normally I would just be sore. It took me about a week to recover when it would have only taken a couple days before. Adderall just seems to leach something out of my muscles that makes them prone to spasms and strains. I have been eating less so there could be a protein deficiency. I have increased my protein significantly to see if that helps.
The answer to the muscle spasms is CHELATED MAGNESIUM and Methylacobalamin (the best absorbed form of B-12). I had the same issue as all of you. Come to find out, adderall and many other prescription deplete the MAGNESIUM and B-12 in the body. MAGNESIUM controls muscle contractions and B-12 is vital for nervous system health. when depleted they can cause the very same side effects or worse!
Was trying to reply to the answer to this post, it was extremely helpful. Am curious as to why the chelated magnesium. I live in a small town and it wasn't available locally and have had to order it. Until it comes I purchased a powdered form of magnesium citrate. I was already on a methylated form of the B's. It has only been a day and a half and am hoping I'm not imagining the relief.
Same by me. I think it's because it causes hydration issues. When I drink a lot of fluids, the problem is much milder.
I would agree. The Stimulants I have tried cause muscles issues, mainly in my neck. We've tried 4 meds..At first was on adderall.. Severe neck pain developed on about week 2... Went to ER pain was unbearable (not knowing it could be from meds)Tests showed extreme muscle spasms. Stopped meds on my own and was pain free. Saw doc& explained issues.. He
switched me to concerta same day within an hour muscle pain started... We stopped that one& tried vyvanse.. now I'm on focalin and wouldn't you know... Neck pain is still an issue, headache& sometimes swallowing an issue ! This is even on low dose( 10mg)
On days I don't take meds I never have any of those issues. So I know it's the stimulants I'm reacting to. My Doc thinks it's really uncommon but he agrees that these stimulants are what's causing my issues.
It stinks because I'm a mom of 3 kiddos& a full time college student. The add meds help me focus& complete tasks but this neck pain isn't worth it! Also, no pain meds or muscles relaxers help much.. But once the stimulants have worn off I'm good.
My 15 yr old son has been on add meds for almost 2 years and it has helped him tremendously with his add &thankfully he has never had any issues but if he did I would let doc know& we would take him off.
It amazes me how I find the right information at the right time. I am currently on my second day of not taking Adderall . I am scheduled to see my doctor soon but I suspect I will not be refilling the prescription. Adderall is very helpful but since starting over several months ago I have been experiencing gradual increase in stiffness and soreness in my neck, lower back, hip, and inner thigh near groin. The pain radiates from lower back, inner thigh , down to the knee. Since I have not been on the medication for 2 days the pain is improving. So I will let you know if it is completely gone in the future because this happens on and off and I suspect it is Adderall but not sure. I am scheduled for physical therapy Sept 2 and will see my doctor soon on the 28 of August. The weird part is that there has been no recent injuries and like mentioned above it gradually increased during Adderall use. Maybe we are on to something but I will still get it checked out by Doctor.
I have had major muscle spasms that started with a headache that pulsed from my neck up and around my head behind my right ear to my right temple. I went for trigger point massage and he relieved me of the headaches but my muscles in my shoulder blade started spasm that created a stabbing pain. I had been on 40 mg of Vyvanse. After 2 rounds of PT and muscle relaxers Baclofen with Aleve
I decided to have Trigger Point Injections of Lodocaine and Marcaine. After 2rounds I had relief. So, to test if it was the stimulant I took 1/2 a dose 15mg of Vyvanse and I have had a the exact same headache for 3 days even though I only took 1 dose. MISERABLE! Nothing gets rid of the headache!! I guess I cannot take stimulants and they did help my ADD and eating. Bummer!
Glad I found this information but sad at the same time! The same pains just awful because I have a physical job with horses. The meds have really helped me but also now in so much pain I can barely work. Have Dr's. Appointment coming this week so at least I have this to go by before doing testing that may not be needed! Thanks
Your story sounds very similar to what I went through I am on Adderall ir about 60mg a day and have developed strange muscle pain and weakness the first time it showed up it was very scary the muscles in my inner thighs felt so stiff and I could not lift my legs it was way to painful went to ER they checked me out and didn't say they found anything except my muscle inzymes we're elevated gave me a bag of fluid and sent me home the fluids helped a lot .
So now it keeps coming and going in my arms for arms feels like the muscle is going to tear and makes doing anything that uses the muscles that are effected impossible. So I hope that it is the Adderall and not something more serious I had to comment when you mentioned the lower back and inner thighs pain that's exactly what I get I started taking daily magnesium and potassium supplements it does help and making sure I'm hydrated I am afraid that it could be something serious like ALS God I hope not hope this might help I'm have not stopped the Adderall yet I'm going to try that next it seems to be issues w muscle issues and the amphetamine salts ??
Just got my vyvanse dose upped from 20 mg to 40. My butt and thighs don't hurt they just have the weirdest tingling/hard/numb sensation. And I almost feel high like fuzzy. But to totally contradict that this is the only dosage that has been able to properly help me with my attention issues which are severely ruining my grades so the meds are necessary. Any tips on how to lessen the symptoms?
omg this is exactly what im feeling on adderall, i go between 15 mg IR or 20mg XR, I used to take breaks from it and ended up taking it everyday because i work 2 jobs and go to school. did you ever hear anything from a Dr. about this?
I get these types of symptoms with any stimulant: diet pills, etc. Just started on Adderall and will see how it goes. Decided to start on a low dose: only 10 mg/day. I have already noticed lower leg pain.
So it is stimulants, not just the med. I chalk it up to adrenal burn-out. I have only had these things since high stress events that caused my adrenals to fry. So go to an endocrinologist.
Also, the way I manage my adrenals and all the myofascial issues that go along with that condition is I see a holistic doctor that gives me natural supplements that greatly reduce my misery. I mean like you wouldn't believe. AND for muscle pain and tension she has a class IV laser she uses on me. Works miracles!! Forget the thousands of dollars for MDs and expensive tests. They will get you nowhere.
Find someone who has a class IV laser, gives nutritional support for adrenal burn-out, and is well practiced at applied kinesiology. that's the key.
Natural supplements that help: licorice root, Spanish black radish, organically bound minerals, drenamin, magnesium, celtic sea salt - a tsp or so melted in water that you gag down. Keep hydrated, eat well, avoid caffeine as much as possible, yoga. Also Rescue Remedy. And the Class IV laser will greatly reduce muscle tension.( look for those who own them at k-laserusa.com)
No, I don't rep any of these things. They have all worked wonders for me for years. Without an applied kinesiologist/naturopathic doctor, you won't be happy. MD's cannot do a dang thing for you.
Out of all the comments on here, this one was the most helpful. I have been in such pain with my neck and shoulders, sometimes down my arms also. I've had some hair loss (thankfully not too bad).. I ONLY take adderall twice a day and no other medication. I really wish I didn't have to take the adderall either. I am definitely going to try the naturopath doctor (if I can find one in the progressive state of MS lol). I don't want to waste money on doctors and medications. I know dang well if I go they are going to put me through a ton of testing that I really don't want to pay for. I was even considering acupuncture but I am a little bit scared to do that around here and I don't know anyone that's actually done it. I am also going to try some yoga.. I do some light strength training and when this all started I actually thought I may have pulled something or stressed something so I pulled back and it just never got better.
Thanks so much for commenting. I'm going to go the route you did and see if that helps alleviate the pain.

Adderall flushes the salts out of your cells. If I drink a Powerade in the afternoon when my Adderall starts plateuing it really helps replace what my cells have lost. It is painful when the salts leave the body. Drinking alot of water just makes it worse. Most doctors don't even discuss this with you. Also, you will find you can take alot less mg. than the doctor prescribes. Your muscles and joints need these salts ( magnesium, potassium etc.) to function properly.
I have been on adderall for abit over a year. adderall IR. i over did it in august, shortly after starting the adderall and have had neck issues since. despite seeing several dr's chiro's acupunture , pt etc etc..and spending alot of money. it seems there is a not or two in my upper trap that just wont calm down.. maybe it is from the adderall. i guess i need to drop it , if i can and see if that helps. I only take between 2.5 and 5mg. so it might be hard to cut the dose down smaller. but at this point everything i do causes the right side of my body to pull forward.

I have had and sometimes still have the same problem. These adverse reactions usually present in the form of micro-cramps occurring in the muscles anywhere and/or all over the body as the nerves within the myelin sheaths that surround these muscles become deprecated or even stripped of their normal store of the mineral salts that are necessary for the electrical discharges and recharges in the nerves that communicate information to your nerves. When stripped of the conductive properties of the electrolyte salts that they require for manifesting a flow state of electrical current along the meylein sheaths surrounding them. These salts are given preference for the electrochemical transactions (and concomitant reactions) required by your visiting amphetamine molecules to be properly and gentilly processed into the compounds they become im order to stimulate your body to produce larger quantities of dopamine (thus “dope).
But they are rarely visiting dignitaries sent to affectuate an interim adjustment to your homeostatic dopamine level and gone in a day or two or three. Instead they are like the relative that comes to visit and lives for a few years on the sofa, always planning to leave you soon, but conveniently finding a way of staying for one more weekend. (Just having fun here! If your metabolic state maintains a homeostatic level of dopamine that’s so low (or high) that it interferes with your life, and deprives your body the novel experiences it naturally craves, then these dignitaries are welcome like a dissident in a foreign embassy, and are granted diplomatic license to carry on as distinguished guests on an open and welcome invitation.
Although adrenal glands don’t actually experience “burn out” as is often reported, the electrochemistry associated with imbalances in basic electron donors and the host molecules who love them, cause a symphony of ills, all of whom are typically (and well done) glommed together and referred to as unresolved autonomic flight-or-fight adrenaline upreguations whose continual overstimulation reduces (without “wearing out”) the glycogen stores and other key peptides that are normally present, and in whose absence an inflammatory response is signaled, over and over, such that it produces a perceived continuous contition, designated to be “chronic” speficically due to the fact that inflammation is being continually enough triggered as to be experienced by the micro body as being continuous instead. “Chronic” inflammation, then, provides a veritable proving ground for all manner of more aggravated chronic states known as “chronic conditions” leading to “chronic diseases” which are the conditions - not unlike
Only when I take Adderall do I get muscle cramps especially in my hands. I Experience dehydration although constantly drinking fluids. Is it due to lack of salt? I’m Taking magnesium and potassium supplements with no positive results. Help
I've been on 30mg of Vyvance for about 6 months. I'm so thankful I found you guys. I will stop Vyvance immediately! I woke up 10 days ago with painful stiff joints. (Ankles, knees, elbows, shoulders, wrists). I felt like a 90 year old osteoarthritic woman. It was so bad I couldn't take the cap off a water bottle. My hands swelled some I couldn't get my wedding ring off. The last two days until I woke up with excruciating muscle pain in my upper extremities, shoulder blades and posterior neck. I originally thought it was endocrine being that I have Hashimoto's, however, was encouraged to go to the ER. All my labs came back normal. CBC and differential, ANA, CRP, Sed rate, etc. also my TSH was normal. Ibuprofen originally helped the joint pain but not the muscle pain. They prescribed Vicodin. That made it tolerable. I've seen my GP and an internist since then who just referred me to a rheumatologist. However, it sounds like there is no need to go there. It has to be the VYVANCE! Thank you all soooo much! I had to post this to inform others as well.
I to have been taking Vyvance, and have bad pain through out my body. Neck stiff wake up almost every morning with bad headaches. Hands swollen. I don't want the way I felt b4 back but the pain is just too much. So I will be talking with my psychologist soon for a answers. Thx for the insight good luck to all
I have been taking Adderall XR for nine years now and for the past six years I have had suffered with a lot of shoulder/neck tension. It's very frustrating; I have tried many many things and have finally found the answer! YOGA- yoga yoga! Yoga has truely been magical for me and I am amazed at how much better I feel when I go at least five days a week. I have also switched to eating a very low sugar and low-next to zero gluten diet. I have noticed that rice also causes tension. My diet and yoga have worked wonders for my body! Good luck. :)
I've been on Adderall (non-XR) for about 14 years. The answer actually is DAILY STRETCHING, and YOGA if you can. At least stretch your NECK to which everything else is linked. You may even find a few knots--at the base of your head/top of your neck especially. Also wear a night guard to avoid headaches from grinding.
Not sure if this is applicable for you, but after years of similar pains, I was referred to a dermatologist for Botox injections in the masseter muscle (aka jaw muscle). I waited a year to actually do it because I was so hesitant but finally tried it. It caused an even more painful spasm for about a week but ever since it has made SUCH a difference in neck pain and headaches for me. I still get shoulder pain on occasion but it’s nowhere near how bad it used to be. So glad I tried that!
I was recently given adderall 20mg XR (taking 1 capsule daily) in genetic form to help me focus better since going back to college and working full-time. begantherwise healthy and have never been on any medications before. I'm only on day 2 and have been experiencing horrible upper thigh muscle pain, neck pain and dull headaches.
The headaches started the first capsule night while trying to sleep so I contributed that to maybe it wearing off. I woke up with that same headache and neck pain began. I went to work and it took 2 Tylenol, 1 Claritin, 3 Advil to bring it to a mild headache by that afternoon! Leg pain began morning of day 2 and has been constant. Im on Day 3, and skeptical to take my 3rd capsule So yes I'm attributing these symptoms to Adderall XR and will put a call in to my physican asap. I'll let you all know if these side effects are temporary or not!
