I was just given tramadol by my doctor for some pain. Has anyone taken this and if so did you find it gave you the same relief as Percocet or Vicodin? I was also confused as to why I wasn't given one of those instead of the tramadol, which I have never heard of before. Thanks
How strong is tramadol 50mg for pain compared to Percocet or Vicodin?

I was also given Tramadol (50mg) for pain and to me personally, it doesn't even touch a Percocet or Vicodin. Also, this is a very dangerous drug. I was only on this drug (as needed) and within a week, my kids were calling 911 because I was having seizures. I didn't know who my kids were, I didn't know what year it was, didn't know who the president was. I was in this state of mind for almost an hour and just so you know... this was the scariest thing I had ever experienced. And the funny thing about it is that the ER doctor asked me why I wasn't givin hydrocodone. He told me that I should suggest this to my normal doctor. Doctors think that they are doing you a favor because its supposedly non narcotic, not habit forming... that maybe this drug would be better than the ones that are most sought after...
but I'm gonna be honest with you, Lortab, Percocet, and Vicodin never gave me seizures or had me where I didn't have a clue what was going on and they did actually "take away" my pain. The doctors in the ER said that Tramadol and Ultram are connected with seizures, so whatever conclusion that you come to, please be careful when taking anything new, because you never know how that certain little pill will affect you.
Well, I suffer from chronic pain, legs, ankles, muti surgeries etc, everyone has a story an reason, 1st, yes its addicting, I am on 30mg oxycodine. An have switched from oxycotin 40mg to Opana 40 mg, the cotin was to intense for me. How ever, if you take as prescribed an don't abuse them, your safe, I have been on pain meds over 10 yrs now. I went all last month with out due to mix up, the Taramadol helped me get thru the pain, but now I am back on my ref meds an doing fine. So just watch your intake an plenty of water, no booze! An you'll do fine,
Tramadol is very inefective u our any one else do ur self a favor get on metjadone u won't have pain issues at all!! Guaranteed
no,no, please don't mess with methadone, Ever... DD
i take tramadol because my doctor wont prescribe me anything better... he told me im only supposed to take two at a time... yeah right... i have to take three or four and sometimes eight at a time for it to even touch the pain... its bs if you ask me... i hurt so bad that i run out in about a week and he only gives me one refill at a time and have to wait for him to approve a refill thru the pharmacy... does anyone know the long term effects of this drug?
hi silverjewell sorry to hear about your pain. i also take tramadol for pain i have arthritis and i had a very good doctor explain to me about this medication. it is not a traditional pain killer it actually is not a pain killer it is used to manage pain and is usually used with an anti inflamitory like aleve or motrin. this medication is not designed to remove your pain just make it tolerable if your doctor told you otherwise you need to talk to another doctor.
Yes, I know this. There is currently a crusade against effective c3 and c2 pain releavers. Just this morning CNN did a piece on deaths from overdose of pain releavers (they claim there are more each year than deaths from traffic accidents). Every report like this stigmatizes these necessary meds more and more. Doc's often do not know the pharmacology of a drug, only that it works or not. And with pain pills, i know where I live there is a communal, interlaced web of doctors who seem to reject them on "moral" grounds. That's not science, not at all objective or rational (the mandate of science).
Tramadol acts by metabolic binding to certain opiod recepters in the brain. This simple fact down here in the South at least, is leading very quickly to a scheduling for Tramadol . Pharmacies swear they see tramadol-shoppers just as they encounter hydrocodone and oxycodone shoppers. WHY?
You are right: they do nothing to reduce pain for me, and as you say you can take 8-10 tabs at the same time and you feel no different from taking the suggested 2 tabs. I have written before that tramadol has a little serotonin boost for a long term assist to stronger anti-depressants and that it IS a very effective med in lessening the physical pain of withdrawal from a true and effective opiate like Lortab or Percs. It should be labeled for use in ER's to treat hard and dangerous withdrawal, not for pain relief!
thank you for amplifying my comment just so that you understand my situation i have arthritis in my feet and in cold or wet weather is very painful. i take 1 50 mg pill 3 times a day sometimes only 2 depends on the day but i also take it with a prescibed does of 500 mg of naproxin (aleve) which makes my pain level tolerable and i can function. i have lectured many of my neighbors about the proper use of tramadol because the the doctors here in florida have been vey reluctant as of late to prescribe harder pain killers right off the bat and for good reason. but all anyone want to do is pop a pill and be out of pain rather than control it and try and solve the medical condition behind it which will just lead to substance abuse. tramadol is a great drug when used properly.
Tramadol is the generic brand of Ultram & has a VERY small amount of narcotic pain medication/opiates. In my opinion, there is absolutely NO comparison between it & vicodin or percocet-doesn't even rank with darvocet! However, every1 has a different tolerance level & so what may seem like "nothing" 2 me, may make some1 else unable 2 "function" &/or b pain free. I hope this helps u in some way.
B safe!

I am on Tramadol 50mg, does not work for me at all!! I have bursitis in my right leg, was on hydorcondone, got sick to my stomach, not on this one so far, but it's not working, still in pain, can't live like this, I'm an active person, love the gym and bowling, now I can't, hope the doctor puts me on some thing stronger!!!
Tramadol is Non-narcotic... the reason some people think that it is, is because in the warnings, it states, "If you are allergic to codeine or morphine, do not take the medicine."
But I promise you, it is NON-narcotic... I've taken 6 at a time and later, taken a urine drug test for OPIATES... the test was negative... I have done this several times... the test ALWAYS came up negative for OPIATES.
Tramadol (Ultram) may have addictive properties, but I assure you, it is easier to stop the treatment than other narcotics such as oxycodone or hydracodone...
I was prescribed traumacet post a major abdominal surgery after epidural removal. It did nothing to relieve my pain. I told the surgeon but he insisted that is what he would order. As a result I spent several days in agony.
i have taken tramadol for several years i am a cdl driver and cannot get a DOT card if on pain killers, tramadol is a non-narcotic but it is an opiate. it is a pill that is metabolized into your nervous system to help reduce pain at the nerve endings along with naproxin it works great. a regular pain killer effects your brain so you don't feel the pain which is why your can't take them and have a DOT card. so to simplify it is not a PAIN KILLER it is to manage the pain level and make it tolerable.
I was prescribed tramadol for my endometriosis pain. I was actually rushed to er because I lost a lot of blood. They examined me, tested me, gave me a shot of dilaudid. Boy, did I feel much better and on top of the world stumbling out of there. But when I was home 7 hours later, felt pain in uterus creeping back, so I at Took 2 50mg Tramadol from my script. Still in pain and pissed. I feel a little woozy and that's about it. I don't understand these doctors. Do I have to literally scream to make them see the agony I am in?? Bullshit, the whole health care system is ridiculous. So to answer your question. The strengths in pain relieve are incredibly different. Apples and Oranges.
Could'nt agree more
it would seem significantly weak in comparison to taking a shot of dilaudid.. hell, a percocet vs dilaudid is apples to oranges lol.. but seriously, tramadol (in my opinion) is only good to help someone with acute pain or to help someone with their opiate withdrawls...

at work everybody was taking the 50mg at first it makes you sick of your stomache to some more than other but just for the first time.the work that i do is very tired and almost everybody complains of back pain so that was the reson the started taking them.most of them started taking 2 a day and by the end of the season everybody was taking them and they take up to 10 pills a day.I took 2 a day and worked great for me.it relaxes me and maked me talk alot couldnt even feel the pain.but they are very adicted.once you take them is hard to stop.everybody at work had to have them otherwise they got like nervius and grumpy.they wouldt even talk .
I take it for back/neck pain. I'm 34 and was in a bad car accident years ago. I'm in fit condition, healthy weight etc., so weight isn't affecting the tolerance of the drug. I take it, and it gives me sometimes a boost in energy, which is great, makes me more social but does nada for pain. Sometimes it gives me anxiety too. 50mg does not work, I take 100mg at a time and still nothing. I will not be renewing this prescription. I also don't understand why it's a prescription drug if it's non-narcotic?? who knows.
i have been on and off 50mg tramadol for years as i was on vicodon and percocet, the 500 mg percocet has the same amount of pain relief as the tramadol and is becoming a very popular pain reducer used for the benifit of many pain issues as headaches back pain joint pain menstral pain etc... i prefere this medication as it does not give you the sleepiness effect and you can maintain a normal day on this medication, i have not gained weight as i did with the percocete and it does not make me nauseated as the other 2 did... pls feel free to contact me on facebook @ kristy stevens or my email kristystevens83@yahoo.com
i hope this answers some of your questions (: good luck!!!
I find that tramadol doesn't touch a headache for me i took 6 100mg tabs to try an get rid of my headache and all it did to me was make me feel like i was floating with a bad headache lol, it does help me through my day though but ive just stopped taking them after two years and tonight is my first night without any and i feel really really ill my body is aching all over really bad. I decided to come off the as i was reading about addiction and thought i would try something else so i was given dihydrocodine 30mg x2 max 8 a day and they don't even touch the the pain let alone the withdrawal from the tramadol, in my eyes tramadol is a good pain killer.
I have been taking tramadol for two years now. Tramadol is normally given for moderate to severe chronic pain!
i have taken tramadol but not been prescribed it..i got some from a friend when i was out of my 10mg lortab..i am addicted to lortab and it is the worst thing thats ever happened to me ..but i told my doctor and i do have a lot of pain so i think when i go back to the doctor i am going to ask for tramadol..it does help me ..the 50mg but i have to take four or five.. it helps the pain and also curbs the nagging addiction from not having lortabs
my suggestion to u if ur already addicted to lortab I would ask my doc for help with addiction. I was in a car wreak an flown to a major hospital where they treated me for pain with the best medication a person can get. that has to be the worst mistake I have ever made in my life to continue to take them after I was released. they say Morphine withdrawal is considered to be jus as severe & deadly as heroin. I have over the yrs realized that when ppl told me id never been sick off pain meds when I was takin roxi & percs & dros I thought u don't knw what I go thru. when I finally went thru morphine withdrawal I knew exactly what they meant. can u imagine tryin to take hydros & feelin like uve had nothin. that is where my life was. I swore if I could get thru it without dyin I would never touch a pain pill again. how could somethin soo small create hell on earth & make u realize what real pain & sufferin is. I would definitely stop while I was ahead.
nobody ever took the time to explain what goin without was gonna be like. my doc actaully never explained a sinle thing. nobody I knew bothered to tell me how much my life would change or how it was gonna take more & more jus to funtion like a normal person. if u continue on the path ur on I fear 1 day ull knw exactly what I'm talkin about. the diarrhea u have with vicodin & percs & hydro is mild compared to what happens with morphine, oxycotin or opana. obviously they r figurin these things out in the medical field bc pain medication is harder to come by then it once was. thing is now a doc knws when a patient is "pill sick" but they may not realize the extreme ur sickness is bc they have never been there (thanks to the doc entry early on it helps us realize we r all human) they attempt to warn u in ur pharamacy paper work now a days but it doesn't say that the flu is easier to get over. I'm tellin u try to get some help b4 its 2 late bc ull never ever understand pill sickness & withdrawal until it happens to u. soon that little pill determines whether u get out of bed or not & it controls ur every wakin second. whether u can go to work or keep a job. soon it becomes a point where u need it to jus for survival & ur lucky to even get the high. u can lose ur entire life. I would never want any1 to have to go thru it but the lesson speaks volumes. some sickness is different. some mild some severe. I would rather be in pain from my beat up body then EVER be sick off meds. when u do stop it last for WEEKS or even MONTHS dependin on how fast u get the next fix & if its even enough to make u feel better sometimes it only relieves some of the symptoms. id do anythin to save myself this horrible sickness every month but the only solution woulda been to never take anythin to begin with. I've seen it ruin lives & even kill ppl. these r things any1 with common sense wouldn't want for their life. I wouldn't take anythin that is a narcotic without observing every thing that u can go thru. even hearin a person tell u how bad it can be never makes sense until u go thru it. it makes u dependent whether u want to be or not. I'm very concerned about all drugs over the counter & even the drugs they perscribe. I'm glad I looked Tramadol up bc I didn't knw what it was but ill guareentee I won't be takin it. nothin with addiction attached is worth it. they failed to mention dependency to live a normal life & how serious it is to not run out when they handed me that little piece of paper that had relief written on it. even when I finally learned what I was goin thru I didn't knw how bad & extreme it was. I didn't realize the dependency wasn't bc of habit it was dependency for my body to function. jus take care & look everythin up. always talk to ppl that might have taken it so u knw the side effects & always read what other ppl have to say about what they have gone thru. decide if its even worth it in the long run.
"hours to kick in"? I certainly hope it doesn't take that long. I just had a skin graft and was prescribed Tramadol today. I just took it... Does anyone else agree it takes that long to work ???
I take 2/ 50mgs each 4 times a day. I chew them up and they will work faster. This is what may Dr had me to do because it would take so long for them to work before. I hope this helps!
