Hello rainrenaye - Welcome and hope you find everything you are looking for here at DC. I want to say that keeping active is very important and even continuing the PT exercises you were given. Do you have other health issues that you are taking this pain medication? Do you have hip issues as well because I thought I had knee issues but it turned out to be my hips. I am recovering from one hip replacement already. It is important to keep active, where good, supportive footwear... keep your weight in check but added weight on any joint makes it worse. I can say too that with the weather changes that my pain level is higher as well. I have other issues though and feel like a weather reporter.
There is hope at the end and you must be proactive in your care. My stepmom has not fared so well because she hasn't taken care of herself. She is morbidly obese and has had a double knee replacement at the same time. I for the life of me cannot figure out why the doctor did that??? She also has had one hip replacement and for her... nothing has helped but she isn't helping herself... I just keep my distance and talk with my father.
Do you do aqua therapy??? That will help you so much! It takes the pressure off your joints but allows you to do exercises in a pool without the stress and strain on your joints. Just a thought.
I wish you well and a smooth recovery... do what you must and continue with a good pt program. Keep your pain managed and follow the good doctor's orders. It takes time to heal, too.

Intense PT is what fixes the knees. Walk, walk, walk. Move past the pain and keep those muscles strong. Recovery depends on how hard you work out after the surgery. If you can afford a trainer who specializes in muscle skeletal rehab you would getting excellent results. My sister finally decided to work with one and regained complete knee mobility and zero pain. Until she did that she too had daily pain.
Not exercising continues to atrophy the muscles and makes it far more painful. with the second knee you will redevelop a proper walking cadence and it actually will help you regain your strength. Wishing you a good outcome a swift recovery.
Likewise I had L knee replacement. Prior bone on bone. It was 3 years ago past September. Did all. PT and more. Had great range. I need to replace the R knee know because of Arthritis. My problem started about 4 months ago. If I walk in amount of time, pain like before comes on. The after I set and rest, if I stand up and try to straighten my L knee, the pain is terribly awful! My leg feels likes it's hanging especially on the inside nest to my R knee. It hurts bad. Almost made me sick at my stomach. It was perfect and felt great. I had no accident or trauma to it. It came out of the blue. I have read we're ther are some recalls on this knee company and my particular brand. It's not like something you buy in a store and ask for a refund!!! Makes me sick!
Bless your heart, I know just what you're going through. It is true about the pt, or just doing the exercises on your own. I had my right knee done 3 yrs ago and still suffer pain. Some days more, some less, but I also have bad arthritis in that hip and scar tissue from past artho surgeries on that knee in the past. I even have days I still use a cane in case my hip threatens to send me to the floor! But even on those days when you really hurt, try to do some exercise with that leg, it really will help. Part of your recovery time will depend on how much damage there was before the replacement. After I got to the point where I was walking bone on bone, I thought it certainly couldn't hurt any worse and kept putting off the surgery. Wrong! True, it didn't cause more pain, but I did internal damage to muscles, tissue, ligaments, etc... that I didn't realize.
So it's very smart you're having the other one done now. I truly hope that goes well for you. Keep on that pt. Even though I still have pain, I have complete range of motion in that knee. Don't settle for the limited range that your Dr might say is good enough, you can do better!

I have to agree with you as well. I have more motion now than I did prior to the surgery. I also hear the knee squeeking everyday.
Its been 3 years since my surgery with bone to bone, missing miniscus, and torn ACL & MCL.
I am now asduming that a sedentary lifestyle could cause perminant damage after PT is completed. I just thought that life began when my military career ended. One can't just go to college without some sort of exercise to ease knee pain. Now I am in a field I love where kneeling and stooping are paramount. I am in so much pain. There are says I wish that the surgery was never completed.
What else can be done to assist the knee while getting in shape?
I had my knees done about two years ago some two months apart. My wife says the reason they kept hurting is that I did not do the PT well is there any hope for me. The Doctor says they look perfect but they hurt a lot of the time and my balance has gone. Any ideas what I could do that would help. I can't take pain pills over the counter due to talking Warfrin. Any help will be appreciated john
I would suggest that you ask your Dr to refer you to a few pt sessions. They could show you some exercises you can do at home that will help strengthen the muscles on both sides of your knee and your leg. But you have to be fairly diligent about doing them at home and not just at your pt sessions. The stronger your muscles, the less pain you'll have. But I don't want you to take this as you'll never have any pain forevermore. But you can drastically reduce the amount of pain you have. Your Dr can probably give you a prescription pain med to help with the pain while you're getting started on the pt. Hope this helps you a little. Good luck!
You can ask him to for Fentanyl patches l have had 28 bone surgery's 6 hip replacements and a total knee done Fentanyl is the only thing l use for my pain. I will pray for you.
As painful as it is, you have to start doing the PT as soon as the doc tells you. Its very early after surgery. It helps with less pain later on. You have to keep up the PT and use your knee. Believe it or not, many people have little or no pain once its healed.
I had surgery on my left knee two years ago. I did the PT religiously and kept it up after I had completed what the doctor had ordered. After this, I had minimal pain and great range of motion. Now, however, the knee is hurting more than the right knee that still needs to be replaced. It grinds and clicks with every step. I still have good range of motion, but with pain. Many nights it wakes me up and I have to use a cane. The go to answer of we Must do our PT isn't always the answer. Why do I have this pain which is worse than before surgery?
I had my full Kris 2 years ago. Everything went great. Or was a bitch but it was well worth it. The knee healed and I didn't have any pain at all. I was so glad I got it done. Then a couple of months ago pain started back. It feels like I have a band wrapped around my knee and I'm getting terrible burning pains coming from the top of my knee. There is no swelling but every time I use it in walking or going up steps the sharp burning pain is there. Does anyone know if or cures this or do I have to get another knee operation.
That is exactly what I had and I was desperate. My Dr. suggested replacing my knee replacements. Months after my knee replacements my knees felt like rubber bands were wrapping around my knees and I lost my mobility. Chronic pain and nighttime was unbearable. I searched and searched for something to help and found Graston Technique. It worked! Google it. Although the physical therapy at first is quite painful you get instant relief after each session. After months of therapy my mobility is the best ever with little pain. Back doesn't go out anymore either. I can walk steps again fairly normally which the doctor said I would never be able to do again. Wishing you the best!
The pain meds are only going to help you control the pain. My wife had this procedure done 3-years ago and still has residual pain. We have found less reliance on the meds and more PT have been the way to go. Best to you on the next procedure, hope this helps.
I had total knee replacement almost a year ago and it seems like the pain is worse that it was before I had the surgery I have a lot of clicking in a lot of noise coming from my knee my legs swell my calves while my feet swell I feel like it's hopeless
I've had a total of (5) total knee replacements. 3 on 1 knee and 2 on the other. The reason for so many is the second replacement was on both knees and Katrina happened 2 weeks later. My knees healed with massive scared tissue because my PT was interrupted. The last was done to both knees one year after coming home from envaction.. My knees have never stopped hurting even after the first surgery. I wouldn't have gotten these surgeries except the arthritis was so bad in my knees. Now it about 8 years later and they still hurt I can't take NASiads because they're hurting my kidneys so I take prescription pain meds because over the counter meds really just don't help. I'm at the end of my rope.
I have had both knees replaced. The first knee done by one doctor who was inferior and I suffered, boy am I suffering. The second doctor had to re-place the knee again and the first doctor also damage a nerve that has put me in constant pain going on 15 years. I use Gabapentin and at one time when I had insurance coverage I use Pennsaid (sure do miss this lotion under Medicare). What also gives me relief is a cryo machine that pumps ice cooled water into a bladder around the knee. This works great but you're tether to the machine so it's good for night use when you're trying to sleep.
After my two knee Replacements I had massive scar tissue which decreased my mobility and gave me severe chronic pain especially at night. If you have developed scar tissue try graston technique. It is a physical therapy to eliminate scar tissue and absolutely gave me my quality of life back. Chronic pain disappeared and I got my mobility back.
Gabapentin helps me a fair amount. I use 1200 mg to 3600 mg depending on the barometric pressure. I also fine that a cryo machine is great (circulating ice cold water through a bladder). Pennsaid is great but Medicare won't cover it as well as deep massage. Then there is fast acting morphine sulfate. I just hate the days where I hit a ten and I am lost on what I have to take , especially if it I am in the midst of loosening a night sleep. Been 15 years wear surgeon damage a nerve - winning the law suit means little when pain levels are a ten.
I am in 16 months after tkr still have severe pain doctors keep telling me give it time so now I’m in my second round of pt not helping I go to see the dr on the 30th he better have another option I’m sick of all this pain 16 MONTHS REALLY
