I know I'm Years behind on the subject re Gabapentin causing a high but... I'm prescribed 800mg 3 X day. On the 1st day I def feel as if I've taken muscle relaxers but from the 2nd day on they don't effect me like that at all. I've been told that you acclimate to this drug quickly, I have found that to be 100℅ true. If I forget to take it & skip a day I again get the muscle relaxer 'feel". It has helped me Tremendously with the pain in my joints. Before Gab my fingers would hardly bend & I had terrible charlie horses & pain in my calves & lower back. Fo
r me, I can def live with the 1 day of feeling this drug (actually it feels kind of good because I know it is a temporary feeling, so I just go with it, if that makes sense), in order to once again bend my fingers & not have to jump up & down due to those dang charlie horses, lol!! Btw, even though I'm prescribed the 800 mg 3 X day, most days I only take about half that amount, breaking them in half. I hope this helps. I often visit these boards to get informed and read comment after comment (I swear I'm not putting anyone down!), that doesn't help me a bit. So, Yes you generally Will feel it @ first but nothing terrible, and Yes it will help if you have neuropathy like myself.
I just started taking neurontin and I have to say the first week or so I felt like I was in the clouds, felt a little strange, but they are definitely working for me, I have nerve damage in both legs and back issues, and I feel so much better, if you are taking ALOT of them I'm sure it's going to make you feel like your "high" not like other pain medication though... As for you problem i would talk to there doctor about this issue definitely sounds like a hugh problem, you dont want them overdosing and it sounds like that's where it is headed, most definitely take them and call the doctor, good luck to you
I can't comment with any knowledge on the pharmacology or proven effects, only my personal experience.
I hated this drug. I have peripheral neuropathy and would rather deal with it than the side effects of low dose Gabapentin. Individual effects vary greatly with any medication. For me, it made me feel way too "out of it", more forgetful and clumsy than ever!
Yes, I've been taking Gabapentin for 15 years now for nerve pain in my lower back and legs due to an injury. They still make me lethargic but not as bad anymore. They've depleted my short term memory quite a bit and my balance and coordination has gotten bad. I often have trouble just remembering simple words when I'm speaking too. My long term, however, is still pretty crystal clear... I can still remember things as far back as 3 years of age like it was yesterday! Go figure.
However, the relief I get from the Gabapentin is greater than the side effects so I continue taking it.
Very late, but yes you can get high off of these at a high dose, and two weeks worth would definitely do it. Trust me from personal experience I have gotten very high off of these, though that was in the past when I was young and dumb. If he's taking two weeks worth of it, he is definitely getting a strong high, no doubt about it. And if he is looking into drugs like this that a little amount of people know can get you high, that means he knows his drugs well. You should keep a sharp eye on him because he is doing a lot of research to get a high and chances are he will try alot of different things to achieve a high, which can get very dangerous. I don't know how deep into drugs he is, but if I can get off drugs then anyone can. Best of luck to your situation, and hope everything gets better. Try talking to him about why he feels the need to get high because there can be some serious stuff going on.
well, i take gabapentin for anxiety and pain, and yes, it can get some people a benzo like high, it is actually an incredibly hard drug to OD on, when you flood the calcium channels, no more gets absorbed, which is why you stagger the dosages. my prescriber told me i could double up on them, and i usually do that, and it really helps my anxiety amazingly! its like a wonder drug for me, the effectiveness does start to slow down after a week and a half or so, then i just take a break from them for a couple weeks and then they work great again! i've tried so many medications, benzos helped at first, but than they stopped working, its a really safe and versatile drug, its used off label for neuropathic pain, restless leg syndrome, anxiety, and i dunno, look it up, there's tons of information about it, quite the odd little drug
I have diabetes. I'm sleeping most of day away. Been dizzy on standing , sweating for last 4 months. My doc, laurie zurawski had me on 7 diff meds per day. Ended up at st. Claire's hospital. By time I left I was on 1 pill per day. After asking her to minimize my meds..There should b repercussions. Or Mabey I will start working for ministry healthcare 54481. Got new doc hope things change. How do i pursue legal recourse. I just lost most of my summer.
If the person in your house, taking your medication, is an adult - KICKI HIM
OUT. It's as simple as that. Get a restraining order from the court - that way
he will not be able to come anywhere near you or your house.
I say again, KICK THE LYING, THIEF OUT OF YOUR HOUSE. I don't care
who he is. Good luck and God bless you. Take your medication as directed
by your doctor.
Let me know how you make out.
With prayers,
Trish
You have someone who is looking for anything that will give them a better feeling than their current frame of mind - this individual should be reported, and removed from access to your home and life - sometimes tuff love is the resolution - maybe your pain is from the individual whom is causing it. Maybe this is why you maybe experiencing pain and needing Gabapentin. There is no "high" - but sounds like your abuser would take drano if it makes them feel better.
The "high" that maybe referred to is possibly the relief of pain - or a tolerable relief of pain.
Upon the onset of shingles on top of chronic pain syndrome from an accident of 2 years ago-when hit with shingles went to ER and prescribed meds was anti viral YES, but another class 3 drug, NO which did helped me sleep for the night but no help for shingles pain, made emergency appointment with GP and Gabapentin was prescribed, and when taken as prescribed in stages, was the ultimate in RELIEF.
The "high" as it is referred to is really the immediate switch from intolerable to acceptable and moving, ones spirits are noticeably improved from puss face to things are better, enjoyable, and life becomes pleasant again. So if that's a feeling of "high", then I must be stoned.
Shingles and chronic pain at this point in my life is miserable, but with the right combination of proven meds can make life manageable, pain tolerable.
Not "high", just feeling a lot better with the pain I have. Keeping in mind taken in prescribed steps, yes there is relief, but far from "high". Glad my nerve endings are getting a break, they have been working overtime.
Wishing all a little relief, and a better day today, but better tomorrow-when taken as prescribed.
Chicago Cold, I have to disagree with you on that. When I was, initially, put on Gabapentin (1200mg a day) back in 2002, I, literally felt like I was on acid for 2 whole weeks... I was slap happy! Colours were bright and vivid, things appeared to be melting... it was like a psychedelia experience that I only experienced once before, back in 1983 (the ONLY time I actually dropped acid).
Don't know what happened to the rest of my post, but here it is.
I mentioned it to my doc on my 2 week follow up and he laughed as he didn't seem surprised or alarmed by it at all. He's seen it happen before. So, he simply said, "I think we better put you on a lower dose." So he put me on 900mg a day and all the fun ceased... darn it.
It seems to be posting one paragraph at a time so... here's the next paragraph.
About a month later, my dose was increased back to 1200mg a day with no more fun side effects. And today, I'm up to 1800mg a day with no fun side effects... except extreme lethargy. I'll, more than likely be on Gabapentin for life but it beats being in agony though!
So... my point is... everybody reacts to medications differently, some feel nothing while other's feel a lot. You, obviously, only felt the effects of pain relief, while I and many other's felt way beyond that. I didn't feel like I was on acid just because my pain felt better, I felt like that from the drug. And it ceased once the dose was lowered. Explain that if you can.
Gabapentin gets you plenty high.
I don't know
No you can't get high off gabapentin if you do you need help
I beg to differ. The first 2 weeks I started taking Gabapentin, I felt like I was on an acid trip... EVERYthing was beautiful! Colours were bright and vivid and the walls were melting. I was like Julie Andrews twirling on in the hills!
I mentioned it to my doc and he wasn't in the least bit surprised... since he had started me on a high dose. It's a shame that it only lasted two weeks. But, alas... all good things must come to an end. :/
Also, it depends on the person... everyone's body handles meds differently. We are not alike.
You can get high on this medication. I know. I did it. Of course it takes a very substantial amount.
Mortonthe"turtlecow", In 2002, I was, initially, started off on 1200mg a day (600mg AM & 600mg PM) and that was enough to make me fly high for 2 weeks. When my doc lowered my dose to 900mg a day, I was fine and then about a month later, I went back to 1200mg a day and there was no more fun euphoric ride... boooooo!
Sorry MortontheTurtleCow, I thought I saw quotation marks in your username. I think it's time for some new glasses... lol.
It all depends on the person. I can take 4800 milligrams and it has no effect on me.
I take 900mg a day and my nerve pain still not relieved. along with Fentanyl transdermal patch 75mg every 3 days. and oxycodone none of this actually take all my pain away. I am going to pain management. I hope to find a better regiman.
Hope things work out for you! Good thoughts headed your way!
Portia, please let us know what your pain management clinic decides for you.
I have a PM appointment in a couple of weeks. I have heard that some sudden onset neuropathy flares ( burning) are quenched somewhat by Nycynta (Tapentadol). Thanks for any info you can share.
i dont know. I want to know the same thing.
Why??
Drugs affect people differently. If a person is taking your stuff they either get off on it or they are selling it.
This is true that drugs affect each person differently. Keep all drugs away from children and other members of your family whether they live in your house or just visit you.
As an update I can take 16,000 milligrams and not feel any high or experience any side effects. Maybe my body chemistry is just different. IDK
My niece was stealing from me and every time I confronted her she lied, usually saying someone else did it. The reason I knew it was her because no one else came in the house. Even with this info, she continued to lie. I told her I could only get a 30 day supply at a time, so she was putting me at risk of having to constantly cut down my dosage. I remedied the situation by simply hiding them but also ALWAYS having someone around her. With your situation of someone actually living with you, why don't you keep them in your purse, or small cosmetic bag and ALWAYS keeping them on your person. Buying a safe or locks is really not necessary if you have them with you. If you get a 3 month supply and take 3 a day like I do, I just empty the script containers into plastic bags so I can still carry them with me. There is a reason why this person steals them.
Why not make an excuse and ask them to go to the doctor's with you Have the doctor in on it, and have him cite the reasons he prescribed them for. Honestly, if he won't come to the doctors with you, confront him for the last time and threaten to call the police or anyone that he would be scared for them to find out. But be 100% sure it is him that is taking them. Lastly, bait him... leave some out... hide... catch him in the act.
No one steals my medications & I still use a safe. It's in my contract with my pain doctor.
I believe it is ..it is a seizure medicine which lets the synapse complete it's path to another brain cell the feeling is much like that of taking a pain pill
