I can understand your frustration! I've had fibromyalgia since 1983... I had symptoms for almost 10 years before anyone could adequately diagnose it. Up to that point, most doctors thought I was just seeking pills or had emotional problems! That DID NOT HELP!
Over the years the pain has progressed, and now I also have arthritis in my back and neck and am on Soc Sec disability, and I'm only 51!
The most relief I received was after changing to a new pain management doctor, who understands that not everyone can afford $1600 a month for Opana (which my previous doc prescribed... when I lost my health insurance I went through a very painful and lengthy withdrawal). My new doc prescribed methadone for the pain, and it actually has helped, plus the cost if you pay out of pocket is only $17.25 for 150 10 mg pills... a 2 week supply.
When you have chronic pain that will not ever be cured, addiction to pain medication is not the issue. Taking medication responsibly for a lifetime is what you have to do, if you want to have ANY quality of life. How can anyone accuse you of being addicted to something you need to continue living? Going off pain medications when you have a life long pain condition is just asking for suicidal thoughts to creep in. I don't know how ANYONE can bear going through life without pain meds, when their pain level is between 7-10 on a daily basis! Why should anyone HAVE to?
Hi I to have chronic pain it is orse for me when the weather changes fast but as for the pain sometime heathelps and very gentle masaging a soft gentle rub dont hurt bad..
Sometimes you just have to switch doctors. I did best decision I ever made. It was a hard choice to make I had that Dr for yes now I'm doing a lot better.
I have Fibromyalgia, too, and have tried most of the same drugs without much success. I'm still taking Cymbalta, but I'm not sure if it's helping at all; I still have a lot of pain. Just a word of caution on the pain management plan, though ... Our daughter was sent to a pain mgmt. clinic in CO; they sent her home with large quantities of Dilaudid. Long story short -- she became addicted, and even after going to a very expensive rehab facility, will probably struggle with addiction the rest of her life. :(
You will only find a rare addict here. Most of us have been through a lot before we ever took our first pain pill, injection or whatever. I even had to see a psychiatrist for 6 weeks before my doctor would prescribe anything that even came close to helping my pain. I was a very active person in my community, I gave up none thing and then another until I even had to stop playing piano at my church. I played golf, exercised, worked in my 4 acres landscaped yard almost every day. Then when all else failed I had to use narcotics. I'm 58 years old and managed many years of pain without prescription medication, but when you need it you need it. The psychiatrist told me that when you really have pain everyday you will not become an addict if taken as prescribed. The addiction comes from abuse, either taking more than prescribed or taking it after the pain is gone! This site is for those whose pain will not go away. We are here to help each other not become addicted.
When the time comes for additional medication we talk to our doctors, we don't take extra medication. Most of us have to take them in to be counted if we have an appointment that is in between refills, which have to be picked up at the doctor's office. My heart breaks for those who get addicted because I don't know how they would deal with their pain.
Thanks for your input ... Just want to add that our daughter (who's had bad kidney problems for 10 yrs., multiple surgeries, etc.) didn't intend to overdose on her meds -- but when the pain was bad enough that the meds weren't controlling it at the levels prescribed, she took more & more! So I agree that if they were taken as prescribed, not as many people, at least, would become addicted.
I'm glad your primary physician is sending you to a main management specialist. When you are in pain, that's what you need if you haven't gotten improvement. The ideal pain management specialist, in my opinion. is one who is willing to listen, who will work to find out what pain meds work. Note: He may prescribe a narcotic pain med, such as Vicodin or Percocet, if nothing else works. As long as you take it as (s)he tells you, and you use it to get enough relief to do something other than think of your pain, you will not generally have to worry on becoming "an addict". You will slowly build tolerance, meaning you may need more, but you won't get high, and you will be able to go about your life. Good luck with that!
I can feel your pain... and frustration. I started taking Savella about 2 and a half weeks ago and it is already helping!! My fatigue and pain was extremely bad and I was missing many hours of work. Now, I wake up ready to go with less stiffness, less pain and more energy. Seems too good to be true but I am so thankful! The only side affect has been hot flahes and they only last a few minutes. I can handle that!!
You might ask your doctor about Fentanyl patches (Duragesic patches same thing). You wear them for 3 days then replace it. It releases the medicine continually. There are several different strengths so it can be increased. I use that and Morphine Sulfate Immediate release 30mg for breakthrough pain and a muscle relaxant.Without the patches I had no relief at all.
I was on the Fentanyl patches for several years until my doctor decided I had been on them to long and took me off cold turkey. The patches are very addictive and the withdrawl was terrible. During my time of using them I would feel wonderful the first day, the second not as well and by the third day it had already worn off. I lived for that every first day with the patch. Not a great way to exist for sure.
I have been diagnoised with Fibro for 14 years. I was on Vioxx and I took myself off of it right before they banned it. I had come to the realization that all the sleeping pills and other meds they had me on were not really working. I got a perscription for a Hot Tub and go to a lady who does trigger theropy, hot stone massages and regular massages. I stay away from store bought meat with steroids injected cow and chicken meat. I also stay away from floresent lighting as much as possible. Those things can set off a attach for me. I have been drug free since 2003 from all meds as I found out the meds gave me more problems than they fixed. I walk and dance to help with the pain. I am in pain everyday but I can manage it without taking drugs. I have a therapedic mattress that helps me sleep and have to use a small pillow between my knees to release the pressure.
Since I have done these I have cut my pain more than half and even though I am in pain at least I won't get any more problems from all the horrible bad drugs that only give you more problems.
Vioxx gave me liver damage and I tried to get in the class action lawsuit against this very dangerous drug, they would not acknowledge me. They only accepted people who had heart issues from this monster killing drug. Those who were on it be very glad they took it off of the market. I am still fighting the effects of this drug that was taken off of the market in 2004.
WOW... I don’t know how you do it? but i have the same case I got fibromyalgia three months after having neck surgery 1/05/2011 the only thing that worked for me so far is Fentanyl I have been also taking Percocet but as of 4 day's ago i lost my hearing I got nerve damage from Percocet I’m pretty sure I'm going to have to talk my self off the Percocet ask your doctor about Fentanyl its worth looking into also allot of people are trying to tell me POT work just as well POT will came your nerves i’m looking into that now because all the side affects of drugs and my hearing lose hey whats next my liver and kidneys I will be dead in a year or two if I keep taking these drugs I think i will take my chances with POT. I wish you the pest of luck and please keep in touch I would like to know what your doctor says next you might have to change doctors soon.
Sounds all to familiar. I am a Mom of 2 children too and I feel your pain. My pain escalated after the birth of my first daughter to unbearable levels. Tried many drugs but having some success after doing prolotherapy to tighten my ligaments. The ligaments stretched even more after having children increasing my pain. I was recommended not to do yoga but instead need muscle strengthening. I currently see a physiotherapist who needles me. I helps alot to release the muscles. I still have a way to go but slowly improving. Will see if I need a bit more prolo and possibly a nerve block in my neck. Wanted to pass this along. U need to find the right people. It took me over a decade. Don't settle for pain.
I too am a mom of 2. And I stated in pain for 6 years with no help. I really hope a pain management dr helps you to enjoy time with your kids. Persnally I think tramadol is like taking a reg stregnth tylenol. Good luck jaime}litlmmmag
I feel your pain!!! I have Major depression and Fibromyalgia... Pain doctor put me on 60mg of Methadone which was a MIRACLE pain medication that gave 24 hours of relief and NEVER had to up the dosage, actullay took only 20mg on good days... Was on it for 5 years, but ran out of money, moved back home 500 miles to my parents and had to wing myself off of it!!! If I could affor to go to my wife's Pain Doctor, who gives her 3 10mg of Percocet and 120mg a day for her advanced MS and RA which gives her a quality of life again, I would go and get back on the methadone dose I was on years ago!!! I do take tramadol, about 400mg per day and it does help a bit with the Fibro and wonderful for the depression!!!
I do feel empathy for you in your situation. Having to care for children
and enduring the pain and inability to move well and quickly cannot be
easy for you. I, too, suffer with this pain from Hades, crying most of the
mornings. Exercise seems to exacerbate the pain and so gaining weight
seems to be the new me. Stretching helps some and before you get out
of bed is the best time for that. Vicadon, ever 4 hours, is my only relief
and, like you, I've tried most of the above meds for this. I do get some relief from "tapping." Sounds like a crock, but there are great benefits for this.
If you are curious, go to your web and find, Tapping with Brad Yates. Looks
foolish... but when I tap for pain... it does relieve it to half the amount suffered.
Good luck from this 15 year pain pro of Fibro.
God bless
i didn't read all the comments, or i would have to cry in sympathy for the pain described here. i am not a fibro patient but i have a friend and her daughter who both are. when they get into the "give-me-a-knockout-drug-NOW" zone, they go climb into the bathtub and float the pain away. i've known them to float sometimes three or four hours. they toss in calming bath salts - lavender, chamomile, and a few others.
this next part i hesitate to say because it may be extremely offensive, so please understand i mention this only because another friend of mine told me about this. she's got severe chronic pain from a car wreck she was in. she and her husband use BDSM flogging as pain management. she says after a session is over, a rush of endorphins floods her entire body and makes her feel like she's floating above the pain.
Not my thing... but I am not here to judge, as long as this is between two consenting adults.
What exactly is "BDSM"?
Bondage and Domination.
Sado-masicism (sp?)
a pain specialist is what u need honey they are trained to help u in these situations your other doctor probably doesnt know much about ito treat it with meds and such pain management should get u out of pain mine gives me a small treatment doesnt hiurt trigger point and then she writes me myy pasin meds and ia m out of there but i also do physical therapy at home and use an empi machine three times a day

I have finally started seeing a pain Managment doctor. He hasn't diagnosed me with fibro but he haa put me on lyrica and tramadol. The two seem to be working together. I have tried to take just the lyrica but then I'm still in so much pain I'm not sure if that's suppose to happen but I'm happy with the two. I'm now back to working full time and on my feet most of the day. So now in the mornings I'm in that much more pain. I do yoga on a regular ever morning and sometimes in the evening depending on how I feel. But thank you so much!!!
I haven’t written to this forum in over a year. Let me tell you why.
I have always been a very active person. I played sports all my life. I love to work in the yard. I would rather be outside than inside. A couple of years ago I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. Boy was I in a lot of pain. I’ve always been very healthy, so when I started hurting so bad I was really worried at what the prognosis might be. I tried everything to get relief. Massages, muscle injections, you name it. I was on Thyroid medicine, pain relievers and a sleeping tablet.
Long story short, I started seeing a personal trainer in Jan 2010. She introduced me to a wonderful supplement. After one month my generalized pain went away. I do not have the aches, stiffness, pain, or tingling like I did before I started taking this. I now have more energy. I’m not exhausted by 7:00 every night. I’m back to working in my yard again. Don’t get me wrong, I do still have tender, painful muscles, but only when I push or rub my muscles.
Now, I have never in my life discussed or suggested anything to anyone. But I am so excited about this product and feel so strongly in its positive effects I just want to get the news out and help as many people as I can. Since this product has made such a difference in my life, I want to “pay it forward” and hopefully help one of you. I know first hand what it’s like to be in pain 24/7 and think that your previous way of life is gone forever. Helping someone else in this way is my primary goal here.
I don’t think I’m aloud to say the name here on the forum. This is not an advertisement. So if you are truly tired of this disease, please get in touch with me.
