I am wondering if it can help you lose weight. I have never taken this medication, but it has been prescribed by my doctor and I want to get to know more about this medication.

This drug that you are referring to is a irol supplement prescribed to you and given by the pharmacist to help raise your white blood count and hemoglobins. Its prescribed to individuals with an anemic issue.
I have been taking this drug for a little over a year now and I went from being tall, thin, and a flat stomach to tall, chubby, and a pooch in my belly and everywhere else too.
Ferrous doesnt make you gain weight, it increases you appetite making you wanting to eat more. I never noticed it, so I just ate when I was wanting to eat and disregarded what my body was actually telling me. I went form 130Ibs to 143Ibs. For a woman always being thin and petite, I noticed a significant change in my body. For someone who has never had weight on their body before, your body almost feels swollen.
So, if your looking to take this drug, to loose weight; I suggest you not to go with this drug. But, if your doctor is prescribing it to you, then you are probably anemic and Ferrous is meant to raise your white blood count and hemoglobins. Now, this iron supplement is suppose to increase your energy levels, and make you less weak and tired. But, increase of appetite is the trick one.
Hope this helps.

Lurb - I would quote from drugs.com the following in opposition to Chuck's reply to you:
Ferrous Sulfate is an essential body mineral. Ferrous sulfate is used to treat iron deficiency anemia (a lack of red blood cells caused by having too little iron in the body).
Important information
Ask a doctor or pharmacist if it is safe for you to take ferrous sulfate if you have iron overload syndrome, hemolytic anemia (a lack of red blood cells), porphyria (a genetic enzyme disorder that causes symptoms affecting the skin or nervous system), thalassemia (a genetic disorder of red blood cells), if you are an alcoholic, or if you receive regular blood
Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine, or if anyone has accidentally swallowed it. An overdose of iron can be fatal, especially in a young child.
Overdose symptoms may include nausea, severe stomach pain, bloody diarrhea, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds, shallow breathing, weak and rapid pulse, pale skin, blue lips, and seizure (convulsions).
Take ferrous sulfate on an EMPTY stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. AVOID taking antacids or antibiotics within 2 hours before or after taking ferrous sulfate.
Ferrous sulfate is only part of a complete program of treatment that may also include a special diet. It is very important to follow the diet plan created for you by your doctor or nutrition counselor. You should become very familiar with the list of foods you should eat to make sure you get enough iron from both your diet and your medication.
Weekly Vitamin B12 shots are an alternative to ferrous sulfate but not as strong.
Another concern with taking ferrous sulfate supplements is constipation.
All the best,
Tony

You're always useful chuck... Just a little warning, for you about iron. It will make your bowel movement look black, don't worry about it.
