Assessment and treatment of pain in thalassemia
For many patients with intermittent pain, sufficient control is achieved with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or codeine/acetaminophen. For more severe pain, intermittent opioids are prescribed, such as beginning with a week of short-acting hydrocodone or morphine.
