I had surgery for torn slap on right shoulder. I am in my 6th week of therapy and pain medication does not help much. Would'nt muscle relaxers be more effective?
Why would doctor prescribe pain pills instead of muscle relaxers after shoulder surgery?

Yes they would be obviously I'd for your body chemistry not every one has the same reaction like you that's why you got pain meds. That's normal but I'd be more than happy to switch you for them I will give you the proper muscle relaxers for them.
Hi jdrhea,
Why don't you ask your surgeon for some muscle relaxers if you feel they will be more helpful than pain meds.? I would think that both would be effective.
But after six weeks maybe the pain meds aren't working because you've become tolerant to them, that's a possibility.
Hope you get the mr's you need and wishing you a speedy recovery,
Lara
Ooops, forgot to ask if you are actually in pain other than the muscle pain?
(Six weeks seems like a longish time to be taking post surgery pain meds, but I'm not an expert on that.)
Call that surgeon, see if someone won't call in a muscle relaxer if you're in a bad way.
pain occurs mostly after therapy and hampers sleep that night. i have brought it up to the doctor before but haven't pushed the issue. i don't want him to think i'm just after pills. i have been only taking pain meds. when ice or heat wont work or if i can't sleep. thank you for your answer and i will talk to my nurse on monday.
The concern is usually for patients asking for pain meds, not muscle relaxers. I don't think you need to worry - ask for them. Also your physical therapist might be helpful in determining if they would help. Any surgery where muscles were cut, spasms result, along with scar tissue, etc. You need to be moving that shoulder as much as possible to break up the scar tissue, so use whatever helps.
