This is so refreshing to see other MM warriors! This truly gives me so much hope in the journey I’m still adjusting to living with this cancer. My doctor just doubled my dexamethasone. Ugh! But I’m pleased to hear the weight will eventually do away! I’m determined to fight and victory will be mine! Katherine that’s awesome your in remission. Did you do the stem cell transplant? My doctor is suggesting I get one but I’m nervous. Any advise or suggestions?
I was on dex or decadron for quite awhile during my chemo. Unfortunately, no matter what I tried, the weight still piled on. On a positive note, though, after I was taken off of the steroids, it took about 3 months to drop 45 pounds. Talk to your doctor. He might have some suggestions. The extra pounds just give your family and friends a little more to love!!
Thanks for the reply Kathy! I'm on oral chemo for multyple myeloma so the dex is part of it until I can get access to other medications, Revlimid for one, that do not need dex as part of the treatment
I know the weight gain is uncomfortable, but it is a short-term problem that will go away when you are able to change chemo. I, too, have multiple myeloma; diagnosed Stage 2 in 2004, chemo and radiation, and went into remission in 2005. No recurrences since then. When you are going through the treatments I know that there are times that you question why you are putting your body through that. Just remember that multiple myeloma may be incurable, but it is very treatable. I am a case in point. In January, I will be happy to say that I am a 9 year survivor. Don't ever give up. I pray for you that you will have the same results as I. We all need to stick together and lift each other up. This, too, shall pass!
Kathy, I am very happy that you have been in remission for so long. It's great to see a fellow MM survivor. I always love to see when cancer gets beaten. Keep up the good work! I was diagnosed with MM in early 2008 and had a chemo and a stem cell transplant later in 2008. I was in full remission for two years and in early 2011 it came back. I'm at .6 on the M protein level. I currently work in Australia so I have to pay for drugs and then claim with my insurance company in the States. I only get 50% back so Revlimid for now is not an option. I am planning to return home in February - March of 2013 so I hope to get back on Revlimid less Dex. I never let MM get me down. I go on about my life. Heck I came to Australia 18 months ago. Thanks for the reply, Carlos
Hi My husband is in remission, and he takes 10 mg revlimid daily. He had over whelming fatigue from it.( a common side effect ) His oncologist prescribed a low dose of Rittillan ,yes the ADHD med ! It has helped a great deal. Good luck to you
Ten year survivor (mm) and am now on Pomalyst. It is super! Great maint. drug as side effects are very little! Celgene, I think, is the pharmacy that makes it. They (or orgs like the LLS and Chronic disease Fund both) will help pay... (or give it to you free)! Anyhow, been on .5mg dex for about 8 months and the weight is coming. I lost about 3.5 inches in height from spine involvement, so I am extra squashed in the middle! ugh. so uncomfortable. I think I'm going to wear muu muus!!! Happy Christmas to all, and may '14 see us healthy and trim!!!
foobazel,
Another MM survivor! I love it! I've not had to take Pomalyst, but the cancer and chemo destroyed my immune system. I get Hizentra (IgG) every week and every 3 months I get Zometa (a bone builder). This combo has kept the cancer at bay. I'm so happy that you are a fellow survivor! Like I said before, MM is incurable, but very treatable. Unfortunately for me, I will be getting these 2 treatments for life, but that is a small price to pay considering the alternative! Merry Christmas!
