I got my first depo provera shot about 13ish days ago and my boyfriend and I had unprotected sex in a spa in the weekend twice. Is there any chance I could be pregnant? My doctor said that the injection was safe enough to use by itself but I don't know and he said it takes 3 weeks for the injection to start working? Does it?! I googled it and on local family planning websites it says that the injection starts working in 7 days. But another one said it starts working in 5 days if you have your period? And another said it works immediately? One said it takes a month to work? Please tell me the correct answer! Is there any chance I could be pregnant? Please! I'm really freaking out I can't get pregnant; I'm too young! Also; does anybody have any experiences with the depo shot that they'd like to share? Ah omg thank you in advance! I'm totally freaking out now. I've already had one pregnancy scare before and it was awful so when does the shot start working? Is there any chance I could be pregnant? Also; if its of any relevance my period was due in a few days; on the day I got the shot. So I haven't had my period and the shot has completely stopped my periods.

Hi im 18 and I’ve been on the depo shot for 3 years, I’m allergic to spermicide and latex so I don’t use condoms with my boyfriend, during the time I’ve been on the shot I have never had a pregnancy or period for that matter and he usually finishes inside me. After speaking with my doctor i was told it can take 12+ Weeks to be able to conceive even after just 1 shot. And early pregnancy symptoms are common side effects of the shot.

Hello mycatisfat (interesting name :) So the long and short of it is... if you got the shot within the first 7 days of the START of your PERIOD, you are protected immediately. In your case, you were supposed to use an alternate form of birth control for the next 7 days after the shot. From here, it would be helpful for you to mark on your calendar 12 weeks out so you know when you are due for it. This is nothing to mess with so down the road, if you want to avoid getting pregnant, go ahead and make your next appointment and even perhaps get a reminder phone call. Not all of my doctors do that but it sure is helpful since your appt. is 3 months down the road. If you don't keep a good schedule... and push it by a few weeks then you will need to use an alternate form of bc until you get the shot. Then the same rules apply again. If you get the shot within the first 7 days of the start of your period...
you are protected immediately - if not then an alternate form of bc must be used for the next full week following the shot.
I hope using this information will allow you to track back to when you first had unprotected sex following your first shot.

Hahaha, thanks! Well, yeah. My cat IS fat so it's true! lol :) And so I'm not quite following... so there is an extremely slim chance that I could be pregnant because I had sex twice about 11ish days after I got the first shot? My periods are often irregular but a week or so I am not quite sure... is there any chance of me being pregnant at all? Or is it just the typical risk that normally comes along with any kind of birth control?? Sorry, I am just really confused and worried :( I can't be pregnant, I'm only a teenager :( Please help... Much appreciated
There should be ZERO chance of you being pregnant IF you first had intercourse 11 days after that shot... I think you are scaring yourself.
Of course, the best method is totally abstaining... then you won't have to worry about stuff like that or STDs or even being that young and possibly pregnant.

Be responsible and just insure you're following directions. If you have 7 days behind you and no other missteps... you should be fine.

To Adp... I don't believe there is any chance you are pregnant. However, be sure to take your pregnancy test first thing in the morning when you rise. Don't use the el-cheapo tests either. I have heard of people getting false negatives AND false positives.
