From the very first pill I had taken I have had severe abdominal cramps like you would have if you had an intestional flu. Anyone else had this experience? Does it eventually go away? I am only on day 3 of the first week and I am worried that I may have to stop taking it.

I have been on this medicine for 4 weeks. No issues, I take morning and night with ginger root supplement pills to keep nausea away. I woke up this morning had severe lower abdominal pain. It would come and go like labor pains. Stomach so bloated and hard, felt tender to the touch, doubled over couldn’t walk or stretch out. Only thing that helped was hot bath and slowing my breathing down. Got back into bed made myself calm down and go to sleep. Woke up hour later and have mild soreness and tons of gas. To be fair I did drink a full glass of lactose free but not fat free milk this morning. I think if you consume anything fatty, any sugar or any alcohol this is the side effect. You have to eat really lean and clean with this medicine. I’m not taking it anymore. It didn’t help with my appetite, or cravings. I haven’t lost a pound. I have been eating pretty clean and walking a ton. It’s really not worth it. Hope this helps someone. Good luck.
Hi, I am on week 5, had to go home from work today. Each week my pain has gotten worse, along with huge gas and burping, has increased, the stomach cramps today, made me dry reach, sweating, tired. I found my headaches and extra dry mouth went away at end of week 4, week 5 has come with dizziness, light headed and i would pass out nearly. I have back pain and I have had a need to do release my bowels, once I do this, it seems to relieve some pain, also I was scared that I was going to have diarrhoea.
I am not sure if it stops, the pain I mean but, the gas has increased and burping. I hope to get to the end of week 5 and have no gas, pain or other.
I can't eat fatty food at all, I literally run to the bathroom and throw up, milk is bad too and I am down to very basic bland food, to get me by. Mood is very calm apart from the pain etc..
Hope this doesn't scare you, I have lost 5 kgs, from not eating or wanting bad food. So I will update each week if need be.
The first 3 days I was perfectly fine. On day four I woke up at 2:30 in the morning with severe upper abdominal cramping. It lasted until about 10:30 am. I thought it was safe to eat, thinking it might have just been a slight case of stomach virus. So, I had a mild 1/2 cup of mac and cheese. As soon as I finished the big cramping started again. Now... last night I had made guacamole and ate about 1/2 cup. Beginning to wonder if the higher fat content sets off the severe cramping. I've only taken 4 doses so far. No diarrhea, and no vomiting, just cramping in the upper abdomen. But, the pain makes me a little nauseous. How many of you think high fat foods and the abdominal cramping are related? I've searched for information about what NOT to eat while on Contrave - but I haven't really found anything helpful. I would love to hear your thoughts on this.
I have been taking Contrave for 9 weeks. I’ve lost 16 pounds so far. Yesterday morning all I had was coffee. About 2 hours after, I got severe belly pain on my right side by my bellybutton. It came in waves and when it felt like my insides were being ripped, I couldn’t even breathe. I bought Gas-X about 2pm and chewed up the maximum dose. My belly, by the way, had been distended since the night before, which was really weird because due to the weight loss, my belly had been relatively flat. TheGas-X had NO effect. The pain stayed in my left side and was so bad at times when I was driving home from work, I had to pull over briefly. It let up by about 7 pm but still sharp, constant pain in my left lower belly. I seriously thought I had appendicitis and would be in the ER today. I went to sleep and I woke up with no bloated belly and no pain.
I have had an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy and 3 childbirths and this felt like the ectopic when it was almost ruptured. I really hope it’s not Contrave! Seriously, I’d rather it be appendicitis. So far I could be the spokesperson for Contrave :) It’s working just like it is supposed to and has been very effective when all diets have failed. If this happens again, I’ll report.
Yes mine hurt daily after I take them
I took contrave a year ago and after about 3 months i had a day with severe abdominal pain , hot flashes and diarrhea, worse than any labor symptoms I ever had. I thought I had eaten a bad peanut butter sandwich so I threw out my peanut butter. A week later, same thing. I stopped taking it but gained all the weight back so I started it again 2 weeks ago. My theory was that it was high fat food that caused the symptoms last time. But last night I had chicken and rice for dinner and woke up at 2 am. Same thing. So hot I thought I was going to faint. Sweating excessively. Pain beyond explanation and horrible diarrhea for 2 hours. My husband was about to call 911 as I was rolling around on the floor screaming and crying. And I have a super high tolerance for pain. I threw them out.
I don’t care about the wasted money or weight gain, I will never subject myself to that again! I only posted this because last year I was looking online to see if anyone had experienced this and couldn’t find anything which is why I started back. I don’t want that to happen to anyone else!
Yes this is still around for me and I have been on it 1 year. I have lost minimal weight . It works in the beginning like most drugs but you plateau and you can’t up your dose more than 4 a day. Yes it’s for cravings away but it stops working cause your body adjust. Headache is also still there. Lost 5% of body weight in first 6 months now nothing - not worth long haul
I was on Contave last year with really good weight loss results (over 30 lbs). However I stopped because of the dizziness I was encountering. I restarted it 4 months ago and within the last 2-3 weeks the horrible stomach cramping and change in bowel habits has started again. I remember this from last time but didn’t associate with the Contrave use at the time. Has anyone had a delayed onset of cramping and if so, does it ever go away? I’m down 20 lbs and am so happy with the weight loss, but these cramps are debilitating, especially when they strike and I’m not at home.
Yes, depending on what you eat you will have this. I first started taking contrave last year. Within 6 months, I lost 30 lbs. The first month was hell because I would always have severe stomach cramps and diarrhea. Since you are supposed to cycle contrave after nine months, and wait 3 months to get back on if needed, I did. I just started back on contrary to lose the remaining 30 lb and I am having severe stomach cramps sometimes .
I began taking contrave in late 2016 or early 2017. I lost 80 lbs and was feeling amazing except one thing and that was the severe stomach cramps and nausea I would experience after each meal. If I dont eat im fine but once I take in any kind of food my stomach begins cramping and the pain is intolerable. I stopped taking contrave a few months ago and all my stomach issues have gone away! Unfortunately I gained 25 pounds of what I had lost and as a few days ago I decided to start taking contrave again because im terrified of gaining the weight back and ive become depressed over it. Unfortunately today I experienced terrible cramps and nausea for the first time in the past few months. I honestly dont know how I lived like this for over two years with such terrible pain. After experiencing this pain again im wondering if im more terrified of the pain or of gaining the weight back.
I feel very sad that I may have to stop taking this pill because honestly it was like a miracle drug for me in battling weight gain. I have hashimoto and PCOS, both these health issues cause weight gain and make losing weight near impossible. Contrave gave me hope and did what I thought was impossible. So far I have yet to find another drug to take its place. I have tried other drugs given by my doctor but none have been as effective as contrave. If only it didnt cause me so much pain i could take this pill forever. Anyone has any suggestions?
I started doing it the second week and diarrhea and i dont want to eat.
Hi Sblankenship, are you still taking Contrave? I’ve been reading posts of patients taking Contrave and keep on hoping that my side effects won’t be so horrendous as the others. I really wanted to lose weight and hope Contrave will help me on battling my weight issues. Please keep us posted of your success and or complaints. Thanks.
NO. I have been taking it for almost 3 years, I lost over 80 lbs. in the 1st year and have been using to help maintain that lose. However, I am now starting to titrate off of it now as I have noticed some hair loss. Now I have enough hair for 6 people, but would like to still not be able to see my scalp. :)
Coming off you do need to step up the watch as I am battling a 5 pound swing , but still holding my own.
I have haven’t, but in the first month of taking it I had mild flank pain, mostly nagging. By month two all side effects had subsided. You should definitely speak to your doctor about it.
Had no problems whatsoever for the first month. On approximately the 6th week I was at work and suddenly started having abdominal cramping so severe that I thought I was going to die! I locked myself in the bathroom and now was shaking and cold sweating profusely! Then I started passing a ton of stool filled with bright red blood. Now I was sure I was going to die! I’m not a complainer and have an extremely high pain tolerance but this was worse than anything I had ever experienced ( even induced labor without anesthetic!). After about an hour the cramping became less severe and I was able to come out of the bathroom. Then about every two hours had mild cramping and passing smaller amounts of blood. I didn’t put two and two together until I came home and read about the side effects of this drug. I WILL NEVER TOUCH THIS DRUG AGAIN!. I am scheduled to have a colonoscopy tomorrow to see what damage has been done and was severely chastised by my doctor for not going immediately to the ER!
OMG... how was your colonoscopy? Reading actual patient’s side effects such as mild to severe abdominal cramping while taking Contrave scares the hell out of me. I hope it did not cause GI bleed and you are ok. Keep us updated. I am just on week 1 of Contrave.
Yes I was actually looking if this is a symptom even I found your post. My stomach feels hard and similar to cramps but more like a did 100 crunches, basically sore.
I'm one day 3 of taking 1 pill. I felt a bit nauseous yesterday and threw up a bit.
I’m on day 2 of one pill. My doc had me starting at half a pill for three days. I was so sick today I couldn’t go to work and threw up, something I never do. Last night I had pain so severe I couldn’t sleep. I’m already thinking I can’t continue this...
