MY 17 year old nephew has been very sick with extreme fatigue and nausea for about 3 weeks. He just saw gi, who told him it's constipation. His mom (my twin sis) is furious-but I think it's possible, and she should at least try treating it. My sister is concerned something more serious is beomg overlooked, even though blood counts, ultrasound, stool sample all clear. Any thoughts?
Anyone ele had these symptoms? oh yes, he is also about 6 weeks post op from having his appendix out. He is an honor student who loves volleyball, missing way too much school! Help!
Can constipation cause extreme fatigue and nausea?

If he is seriously constipated it sure can cause that. I think that needs to be treated and see how he feels, then go from there. It may take dynamite if its been a few weeks. I don't think something like Miralax would be the answer if its so bad its causing symptoms because he wouldn't drink enough water with it and it takes several days to work. A good laxative and then follow it in about 12 hrs with a fleet enema if the lax doesn't work.
Thanks for the tips! The reason my sis is so upset is she says he is going just fine, but the doc said she could feel lumps of stool when examining him-and saw it on x-ray. has anyone had experience with that? where, I guess down low, you are going just fine but higher up in the gut it's hard and backed up? His mom (my sis) insists he is going to the bathroom just fine, although sometimes it is hard. Thanks again, any help is appreciated. now she's furious at me for saying the doc might be right!!
Yes make's you feel very ill!! I don't think he will want an enema but it is the best way, otherwise get a bottle of mag citrate and put it in ice and drink (not the best taste sour) but will work try half a bottle then give it half hour drink the rest. Last time I was at the hospital for that they gave me go lite and it's anything but lite!!l lol
good luck!
Oh yes, that is quite frequent, the stools are even fairly soft to almost runny, it slips past the hard rocks up higher. Yes mag citrate is a good one to blast open a jam, lol. Sounds like he should have had a stool softener after the surgery.
Oh, and he needs to try and hold the enema for a bit, so it works better.
Thank you all, so much! I've forwarded your comments on to my sister... hopefully I don't make her madder; saying he has to have an enema!!
I think he is just having post op fear of bearing down. It is very common after abdominal surgery. He may not even be aware he is doing it. He may be going a bit each day but not fully evacuating because he is afraid of hurting. The stolls back up and then become hard to pass which compounds the problem. See my note below.
Kaismama if you are still on here can you write an update. I just joined now on Monday, August 11, 2014.
If he is just out of surgery, then the pain meds that they gave him for recovery is probably the culprit for the very serious constipation. It will slam his bowel shut. And he will only be able to use the bathroom in little pellets. If that's the case. Stop the meds. Take miralax on a daily basis until he is back to normal.
I am a 45y/o black woman with two sons, 25 and 20. I went to Google for an answer to, "Why am I extremely nauseated following a BM?" and your link popped up. This has baffled me and the docs I've seen. I have all the same symptoms as described for JE and have had all of the tests suggested (some multiple times over the years) without an etiology resulting. I have had Upper endodcopies, colonoscopies, ultrasounds of my gallbladder, bloodwork, xrays, miralax, metamucil, benefiber, beeno, gas-x, colace, dulcoax suppositories, mag citrate, fleets enemas, soap suds enemas, go lytely, exercise, stool studies, occult blood tests, increased water and fiber to my diet. I've even had a small bowel obstruction in the past that decompressed with a NG tube placment-no surgery required. My stomach swole to the size of 9mo pregnancy, and I wasn't; but, I was in severe pain. I have been diagnosed with Chron's disease, only to be told later, I was misdiagnosed.
I failed to mention I was also diagnosed with Relapsing-Remitting MS in 2001. I have been blessed with fewer issues from it than my bowels. Initially I thought my bowels were sluggish related to the MS, now not so much my thinking. I have taken Phenergan (which only knocks me out and gives me a hangover effect when waking) and zofran for antinausea. I did notice my post comes years after the initial thread. I thought maybe JE found an answer(s) in the mean time. In over 10 years, I have not. I'm thinking of trying a colon cleansing myself. That is one thing I have NOT tried. I got that from the thread here. Thanks very much! Hoping JE, mom, and aunt are all living a healthy and prosperous life! God bless!

Since this was over 2 years ago I am pretty sure you were able to resolve the issue lol. But i just wanted to add in. When I was a little girl I had constipation issues for long periods of time. I remember screaming on the toilet because of how much it hurt my stomach. MY parents took me to all these doctors and sspecialist.Finaly they scheduled me for a lower G.I. then later on and Upper G.I. after alot of tests and liking and prodding they found out I had I.B.S. irritable Bowel Syndrome. Which caused me to get sick and extremely plugged up (constipated) so they told me to r ale stool softners and had me eating a high fiber diet. I also try to stay away from alot of dairy. But before we figured all this out I would get extremely sick.
Didn't notice how old some posts were. Can anyone tell me if any of those remedies helped? I have been dealing with same issues for more than 10 years. I'm now 31. I had to quit my job and it is taking a toll on my marriage. Help!
I have the worst nausea that comes and go with vomiting. So badi have been unable to leave the bathroom or bed. Never connected it to my bad stomach aches and sometimes constipation. Also it always hurts higher up in my stomach. And leaves me drained and anxious about being sick and stuck somewhere besides my house.
