Can tramadol get you high like opiates?

Not very smart to do but my answer is yes. But it all depends on the person me and my brother we had the same effects ( we got high) on them. My sister on other hand was very tired and they didn't help he function. My mom also is prescribed them and they just help he get threw the day. Anyways yes from personal experiance they can but also put this into mind that when I first started taking them they got me high but I wasn't takin any form of narcotic or drug. After being prescribe pain killers ( vicoden and percocet) I no long got " high " from them.. so it all depends on the person. Also that's was when I only took 2 at once now I'm up to 4 at once and they do not give me that feeling anymore.. I would like to add that they are very addicting. I'm not addicted to them I haven't actually takin them for about 5mos untill this week and started again but smart thing would be not to abuse them and not to take them regularly. Be smart don't ruin you life.

Reading this is reminiscent of that candy flavored snus they have out now. Just for starters. There is an old commercial "Sooner or later it's Copenhagen(the strong stuff). My answer? If you already are used to taking narcotics and or use them already, there is little danger of becoming psychologically habituated. Like myself, they might help with pain for a day or two some, but then the most I would get is malaise or nausea without the pain relief. Perhaps even an attenuated narcotic taker if they were clean for a good while, they might-that is might feels something the first time or two if they used 2 or more. Not much though. If you really have pain why be physically addicted to some synthetic crap that causes seizures and doesn't even work that well? Go for the real Mcoy forget that garbage

All good answers you've gotten. Not only is it addicting, when you suddenly stop taking them, there is a high risk of seizures involved. There are many misconceptions about tramadol. It's one of those meds that scares me and doesn't work on pain all that well. And I'm addicted to opiates. So what does that tell you? I need my medications in order to function (somewhat) and even with the narcotics I take, I don't get high from them. They simply help control pain, which is the ONLY purpose of these meds. Of course these are my opinions (except for the addiction and seizure parts) so please consult with your doctor and stay safe!

Regarding your question, the answer is no. Unless you take a handful of them. Which would put you at risk of an over dose and seizure, they are manufactured in a way where it doesn't produce that euphoric feeling. And when they start to wear off, be sure to have extra strength advil around for the massive headache to follow. (also personal experience) although this headache came after 2 tramadol started wearing off!

You are so right christine. I started taking this drug for pain due to a car accident. I started abusing this drug because it made me feel like I was on top of the world. The sad part is that I started abusing them more and more to numb my feelings (14 pills a day for approximately two years). Finally this drug did not make me feel good anymore, I was purchasing it because my body craved it not because I wanted it, but I was so scared to get off of them. Not to mention the amount of money I was wasting weekly. I spent in a month approximately 600.00. I have no health insurance so I had to go cold turkey, which made it even harder. I have been clean now for 13 days after being on them for two years. I would much rather give birth to a child then to go through the withdrawl's of this medication. I have been so sick to my stomach, diarrea, vomiting, restless leg syndrome and bad insomnia. I am so happy that I am off of them, but it has been very hard.

I still cannot sleep a full nite and the headaches are unbearable. This has really scared me straight. I will never never never take Tramadol again in my life. I would much rather live with pain.

So im new to this site but i can personally vouch for the bad side dffects of tramadol. I used to take them all the time then one time i took about ten trammies and a few muscle relaxers and about an hour later when i was walking down a 16 set of metal stairs i had a seziure and fell down all the stairs face first and broke my nose, a couple ribs, and worst of all i completely shattered 3 of my top front teeth. Thank god for insurance! Im not saying not to take them to get loaded im just saying b careful u guys.

The questions asked here sound like a mix of those who really need meds for pain, and those who just want to get high because there is something emotional going on in their lives. I have been on Hydrocodone for About a year at 10/500, and have never asked for an increase, I break the pills in half and usually take one half in the AM, and one half at night for chronic pain. But I am 66, and have a lot of joint pain due to arthritis. I recently had a hip replacement due to a worn-out arthritic hip. My doc just took me off the Hydro, because the government leans on doctors that prescribe opiate meds without any regard to how old the patient is. Once again, the Federal Government trying to tell the experts what to do. I NEVER, took pills to get high when I was young. (Cant say the same about pot, but quit that too after I found out that

There is no reason, other than traumatic injury that a young person should be taking opiates, and that is why we are in such a mess in this country. Take control of your life, excercise, and realize that your body is a temple, and you are the best you that has ever been, or ever will be. Get off the crap, and get going. You cannot take any of this crap without wreaking havoc on your liver and kidneys, because they have to flush the stuff out.

Young drug users that are abusing drugs are wrecking our country. Make Life itself your high by getting enthusiastic about something, and you will soon see a drastic change in how happy you are and how people react to you.

God Bless You All , and good luck from an Old Fart Vietnam Veteran.

Its a synthetic opiate yes it can give you a high feeling if you take enough of them. But your not going to do that cause it is dangerous in many ways you can #1 most important of all become addicted and its not no joke. When you run out too early and you have been taking them a while your body might shut down without them not a pretty site this is why many many people are on dialysis their kidneys fail. I see kids sometimes (teenagers) come into the dialysis center its very sad because when i do ask sometimes and almost 99% of the time they said it was cause of drug abuse is why they were there. See so to many risks take care friend please make the right choices it might save your life.

hello again mrspage. As you can see I'm finally back with a working PC. It's the seizure risk that scares me the most with this medication!

i was on the drug, took myself off of it i had a seizer last month, and pcp showed up in me im a church going person nerver in my life have i done any other street drug so yes it can cause a high, the tramadol was what caused the seizer and the pcp too, that really scared me so no more for me,my life is more importent, and i was only taken them for headaches...

PurpleButterfies 8 Feb 2012

Dear lfeem,
May I ask how much you were taking, and were you taking anything else in combination that could have attributed to the seizure?
Anjeegyrl...

dhknight17 14 Oct 2012

I recently had a seizure and believe tramadol was the reason. I was taken one to two every four hours (no more than 10/day as prescribed) along with one to two oxycodone 15mg (no more than 9/day as prescribed).

Delila 17 Sep 2010

Are you asking because you want to try it for this reason? The simple answer is yes, it can give you a high, but as the last person wrote the drug will affect people differently. I wouldn't suggest getting involved in them if you aren't already as they are highly addictive (despite some reports). Generally your body needs to get used to the drug, and you need to get over the feelings of tiredness and nausea before they start acting differently and giving you a 'high'.

Hi Delila. I was prescribed them quite a while ago and it didn't get me "high." But as Marjorie said, everyone reacts differently. And you are absolutely right about them being addictive!

KKaron, YOU SHOULDN'T BE A NURSE IN JAIL... SHOULD BE IN JAIL. I'M A PA. YOU'RE A VET WANTING TO BE A DOCTOR. MY BEST FRIEND WENT TO JILL JAIL ON A MISDEMEANOR SEAT BELT VIOLATION AND HAD NO NUMBERS TO CALL UNTIL THE CORPORAL ALLOWED HER TO CALL ANOTHER FRIEND TO GET MY NUMBER BUT SHE HAD BEEN IN THERE 6 DAYS. SHE SET UP TRAUMATIC COMPARTMENT SYNDROME WHICH IS THE ONE EMERGENCY IN ORTHOPEDICS. Y'ALL TOLD HER IT WAS SWELLING FROM LYING IN BED TOO MUCH AND MAYBE GOT A BLOOD CLOT. ON TO OF THAT SHE GOT INFECTION IN HER BLOOD STREAM AND HAD END STAGE RENAL (KIDNEY) FAILURE AND IS ON DIALYSIS FOUR TIMES A DAY FOR 3-4.5 HOURS. SHE'LL EVENTUALLY LOSE THE KIDNEY. SHE'S 23 YEARS OLD. SO. DON'T BRAG ABOUT NURSING IN A JAIL. YOU DON'T DO MRI, CTSCAN, ULTRASOUND, SONOGRAM, REG, EKG. MOMOST OF ALL YOU REFUSED PAIN MEDS TO HER WITH THE EXCRUCIATING PAIN SHE WAS IN. NO EXCEPTION. SO WORK ON GETTING A DEGREE IN THE MEDICAL OR VETETARIAN FIELDS.

TIDAL Y'ALL ARE NOT EDUCATED ENOUGH FOR THESE INJURES. LATER YOU TOLD THE DAILY THAT YOU DIDN'T KNOW WHAT COMPARTMENT SYNDROME WAS. SHE PURSED A LAWSUIT AGAINST A GEORGIA DETENTION CENTER AND WAS AWARDED A 5.5 MILLION LAWSUIT . BUT SHE SAID SHE'D GIVE IT ALL BACK JUST TO WALK OR RUN AGAIN. SHAME ON YOU AND YOUR SHERIFF'S OFFICE FOR AVOIDING HER COMPLAINTS AND JUST THINKING SHE SWELLED FOR NO REASONS. Y'ALL HABE HAVE CHANGED HER ENTIRE LIKE FOR THE REMINDER OF IT. IN AN INSTANCE SHE FACED PERMANENT MUSCLE, SCAR AND NERVE DAMAGE TO HER LEG AND FOOT. GOD'SGOD HATES UGLY. KARMA IS A BITCH AND IT'S BIGGER THAN ANY OF US.PUNISH WILL PUNISH YOU... HE'LL PUNISH ONE OF YOUR LOVED ONES. YOU DESERVE IT. SHE FORGAVE YOU. I DIDN'T. I NEVER WELL.

I do not agree with all of Delilah's Answer. Her comments were in 2010. We have a lot more knowledge about Tramadol now, than we did in 2010.

marjorie zych 17 Sep 2010

Tramadol affects everyone differently just like any other drug but it can make you very tired or groggy as some put it. I never found it to be much help but it does help some people. As with any drug please don't drive until you know for sure how it will act in your body and please don't drink with it it can be a nasty mix if you do. Hope this answers your question and please be careful with any medicine, marjorie zych

Right on the money as usual my friend.

alienated 31 Jan 2012

To answer the question asked, yes tramadol can get you high but in order to get a strong opiate euphoria it would need to be taken in high doses ( not recommended ). Strength wise if oxycodone was ranked an 8, tramadol would rank a 3. Tramadol generic for Ultram is more popular for abuse in Europe than the states.

My mother takes this med for back and leg pain and she has a string of medical issues already and she is 75yrs old. I am very concerned because when she takes this med she goes right to sleep!!!

tazc23 22 Oct 2012

I would caution any elderly person taking narcotic pain medicine. My grandmother had issues because her kidneys were too weak to handle that medication... most elderly persons have that issue, their bodies have trouble cleansing itself of the drugs..be very careful.

I am aware of the side effects of tramadol now. I was at a very high dosage, 300 mg, not to mention i was abusing it, but I was forced stop cold turkey because of the seizures caused by serotonin syndrome. I havent had any issues since. However, i also take neurontin, which can be used as a anti-seizure medication. As far as withdrawal symptoms, i had some but it was nothing compared to the withdrawal effects of a true narcotic like Narco and Lyrica.

Expand...

You have to understand, you are talking to a person that was taking cocktails of 10 - 20 narcos, 10-12 lyricas and 12-13 tramadols - several times a day... Do not ask me I how I survived during those months, I didnt have my 1st seizure until 2 years after I started. I am very lucky to be alive.

However, you are also very right about withdrawal effects on a "normal" user, it has some very strong withdrawal symptoms for a drug that is considered a psuedo-narcotic. It needs to be prescribed with more caution. My doctor wasn't even aware of the fact that mixing anti-depressants like Cymbalta or Effexor (SSRI's) or Wellbutrin, is strongly discouraged because of the effect both drugs have on Serotonin levels in the brain. That is what causes the seizures... I had to tell MY doctor about it.

I'm a nurse in a jail to find info, inmates are requesting this & we have a no narcotic policy, thanks

niccidawn 16 Jan 2013

using the old morphine equivillance, standard, what would a 50 mg of tramadol shake down to ? thanks , nicci dawn

alienated 16 Jan 2013

Comparing morphine to tramadol is like comparing apples to oranges. Morphine is strong narcotic/pain medecine that will give a user noticable buzz when taken as prescribed. Tramadol will give a user very little to no buzz when taken as prescribed. Like I mentioned in my earlier post to feel any kind of side affect from tramadol the user would need to take 3-4x the prescribed dose. All this applies to a normal person who doesn't abuse medication and have built up tolerance.

KKaron 18 Jan 2013

thanks you, very much
