I just started taking losartan. So far I don't think I have any side affects except made headaches from day one. I have other health problems and I don't want to gain weight. I was just wondering if losartan can cause weight gain?

I couldn't figure out why I was gaining so much weight. I follow Weight Watchers points. But my weight started going up after my doctor put me on Losartan, so I truly believe it causes weight gain. I went up about 15 pounds.
Broccoli is good for everything, and your blood pressure is no exception. Broccoli sends at least four important fighters into the battle against high blood pressure — calcium, potassium, magnesium, and vitamin C. Countless studies show that people with low levels of these nutrients tend to have raised blood pressure. Calcium and potassium help your body get rid of sodium through your urine. Potassium and magnesium relax blood vessels and improve blood flow. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that also strengthens your blood vessels. Get the most out of your broccoli by steaming it or eating it raw. Water-soluble nutrients like vitamin C are lost when you boil it or microwave it in water.
In looking into the recent recall on Losartan I came across this post. Both my husband and I are on losartan for several years now. I take 100 mg and he takes 25 mg. We both have gained weight and notice a similar sinus issue. Can anyone post their reaction to Benicar HCT? What is the cost and is there a generic for it? Or is there anything else you could recommend as an alternative for the Losartan? Thanks.
Yes, according to countless users who have experienced weight gain. Try asking your doc to switch you to benicar HCT. That makes you lose weight.and keeps bp,down on people with difficult to control bp.
I have been having losartan for last 2 months. I experienced some weigh gain.
Also feeling of mild nausea that make me feel uncomfortable. I was having lisinopril earlier and that too was leading to nausea and doctor had recommended Losartan.
Also when i stop Losartan for few days, nausea improved. Can please someone advise.
I began searching for answers to my complaint of weight gain, and whether it was due to my medication Losartan. After reading all of the posts, and realizing that the common thread is Losartan, I will no longer take this medication. I have gained weight so rapidly, it is frustrating. Also, I just got over a sinus infection. I will contact my doctor and insist on a different medication. Thank you all for sharing your comments.
Before taking Losartan 50 mg, my weight was 130 - 133 lbs. I have been doing weight training at 24 hr fitness ctr 3 x week, walk 2 miles 2 x weekly, healthy diet..and have been doing this for over 4 decades. And I just recently added Tai Chi about a month ago to my health regime. I noticed since taking Losartan in June 2017, i have started gaining weight, along with nasal drip, tiredness, bloated, and now in Dec 2017 I weigh 139.5 lbs. I have doing everything the same - exercise, diet... even reduced food intake,,, so the problem is LOSARTAN POTASSIUM 50 mg. Thank you everyone for the confirmation.
Interesting I happened on this thread while checking into Losartan / HCT for other curiousity. I take 50 / 12.5 dose per day for a few years and late 50's. As far as BP reading are concerned this has seemed to work well but have put on about 50#. I am going to try making some more changes for diet and activity but now curious if this may be a side effect and ongoing struggle. My last BP meds (Norvasc / Amlodipine) seemed to have caused my issues with my gums and had a couple surgeries trying to resolve to problem. A periodontist later caught the connect so switch. After several tries of various medications that caused a host of side effects for sore throat and coughing, Losartan seemed to work plus generic but have been battling weight now and never put the two together. Thanks!
Definitely has not caused weight gain. In fact, I have lost 25#.
Then again, I don't eat as much. The headaches that came with high blood pressure actually were relieved a little by eating more. Now that I don't have the headaches and I don't have the high blood pressure I guess I don't also eat as much. Really I think the answer to gaining weight or not has to do with eating too much or not.
Hi I was taking 10mg ramaphil and doctor changed my medication to 100 mg losartan after roughly a month and half have noticed rapid weight gain I don't eat or do anything different I'm glad I found this page it has got to be the losartan doing this
I have been on Losartan for 2 months, eat good and excercise... My weight has been consistant for years. Since I started gaining weight and couldnt figure it out. I have been bloated and dizzy...
Thank you everyone who has taken the time to post, I am calling my doc right now
Can I gain weight with losartan hits
THANK YOU to this forum... I've been on Losartan Potassium for 5 years and gained 20 lbs as well! It has been driving me crazy - I work out regularly, vegetarian, no sugar diet with zero weight issues in the past. I was blaming a slower metabolism (aged 47) which probably also kicked in. Makes me mad I've been to my GP, gyno, endocrinologist over and over seeking an answer. How did NONE of them know this? Seems like my dog gets better veterinary care than I do people-care. Thank you again to this forum! Have an appointment with my GP tomorrow.
I have been on Losartan for 2 months and have noticed a rapid weight gain. I always weigh 134 to 137 and all of a sudden I weigh 150. I barely eat. This is very frustrating because I can't wear my small size clothes anymore since I am taking Losartan. This is what my kidney doctor prescribed to protect my kidneys due to being type 2 diabetes. I hate this medication because it makes me to feel bloated, have mood swings, very fatigued all the time. Muscle pain and so forth. The doctor gave me a water pill called furescemide. I need to tell my doctor to just stay away from the stupid Losartan.
Have been taking this drug off-on for 2 years, but not very effective for lowering BP.
Finally decided after much research to lose weight (40 lbs over) and go natural methods to lower bp.
Lost 20 lbs. when off the losartan for 5 weeks. Went back on it 1 mo ago, after CV for AFIB, and gained back 5 lbs in 5 days. Definite connection.
BTW also was taking amlodipine but found out side effect is heart arrhythmia. Cause of my AFIB?
who knows.
Have been on losartan maybe 6 or 7 years. Gained 15 lbs. all my doctors told me you don't gain weight from it. Finally got off it a week ago . Switched to benicar which I took before losartan. Was on benicar for many years. Never had a weight problem. Doctors said as you get older you gain weight. We'll see.
Yes! Losartan does cause weight gain. Finally I am vindicated! So glad I found this site. I have been on losartan potassium for about 3 months, and my weight gain has been spiraling out of control. I didn't weigh this much when I was pregnant. Had already bought a bunch of new clothes because my old ones were getting too tight and already the new clothing is tight.
With this medication came almost constant bloating and acid reflux, low back pain, headaches, and depression.
I had already decided this medicine is toxic to my body and have been slowly reducing the dose, and I do not plan to refill.
This is about the 6th blood pressure medicine I have been tried on and am now looking into alternative supplements that will help with blood pressure. My body just does not like this stuff at all. Reading your posts has finally given me an answer. Thank you!
Hello Coradael: Same situation for me. I've tried many BP meds, all with bad side effects. Doctors really just want to push the pills and not get into the root cause. I've researched natural methods, which include beet juice, celery, pom. juice, and changed my diet to lose weight. Cut out all sugars, including fruit, all wheat products, alcohol, corn, all salty snacks. I believe the diet change has helped me lose weight (20 lbs in 5 weeks) and has improved my overall healthy. My BP has dropped 10 points. I have a bout 25 lbs. to go. Good luck.
I have been on Losartan potassium since April (3months) since starting this drug I have gained 11 lbs, 7 lbs of them over the past four weeks. I was on Lisinopril but hated the dry cough so my doctor started me on the Losartan. I'm going to request to go back to the Lisinopril I'll take a cough over 11 lbs. (and climbing). I hope the weight disappeares as quickly as it appeared!
Wow, my weight gain and sinus issues all now make sense! 30lbs in about 15 months. And my Dr just increased from 50 to 100mg because my bp is still not controlled. I have competing issues so you never know. I will address this with my Dr when I go back in 2 weeks for a followup.
