I just started taking 10mg Buspar this morning for generalized anxiety disorder. I know this drug is supposed to take 2-4 weeks to reach its max potential. About 15 minutes after my first dose, I felt a calming effect come over me. Is this normal?
Can BuSpar have an immediate effect?

Hi, Flurppity!
Buspirone in general takes at least one to two weeks to have an initial effect and generally can take up to four to six weeks to actually have its full clinical effect.
It would be unusual for it to work immediately although I've heard that some doctors have prescribed it to be taken as needed.
It may be that you're experiencing a placebo effect but who cares. If it works for you fine but I would still take it as prescribed and give it a "fair trial" of a few weeks.
Personally, I've taken buspirone (BuSpar) for many years and it is more effective than any other medication I've tried.
Best regards and I hope it works as well for you.
Thanks, WildcatVet!
May I ask what dose and do you experience any insomnia with it?
WE welcomeme-2 - I was prescribed 10mg twice a day. The first night? I went to bed at 11:30. I went to sleep around 7:30! The last few days I have only taken it in the morning. I will try 5mg tonight.
@welcomeme.
I'm highly resistant to most medications so I've taken the daily maximum dose of 60mg (30mg am/30mg pm) for many years. I've never had insomnia with it but about 1-10% of users might. It's usually short lived as your metabolism adjusts to the drug but if it's persistent you should let your doctor know.
Thank you!
