I'm a male that has been on Wellbutrin XL for over 10 years. Now my insurance company says they will no longer pay for the name brand that I have to take the generics for my bi-polar disorder. Does anyone have any advice which generic has worked the best or is the closest as the name band?
Bupropion - generic for Wellbutrin XL?

Hi, dogman
I've been taking bupropion for years and in that time I don't know how many different products I've used but there have been a lot (I read the labels). The current one is from Slate Run Pharmaceuticals.
I've never noticed any difference in efficacy at all. They all contain the same active ingredient as Wellbutrin but the fillers, binders, and coloring agents might differ and there's a thought that they might affect absorption of the drug in some people.
Your pharmacist should be able to research the ingredients of different products. They may or may not carry a particular product that matches the brand because they stock the least expensive drug at the time they purchase it. Most pharmacies will honor request for a special order if you find one that looks good to you.
Otherwise it's a matter of trying whatever they have and see how you do on it.
Regards and best of luck to you!
