High Blood Pressure - What drugs to avoid erectile dysfunction?
Question posted by missjb4 on 14 July 2012

Are there blood pressure drugs that can be taken that will not cause erectile dysfunction?
My boyfriend has to take meds for high blood pressure, but it is causing him to have erectile dysfunction. We both figured this out because he never had ED before he started taking the medication. Could he talk to his doctor about hbp drugs that may not cause any physical problems regarding sex or if there is none, then maybe only little problems physically and sexually?

I take 2 high blood pressure meds and Lithium. I suffer from ED. Nothing has worked, Viagra, Cialis, pump and caveret. Are there any high blood pressure meds that don't cause ED? The only one I found is Bystolic.

After having tried many different BP meds that also caused ED, I am presently taking 75 mg. of Losatin, which is neither a Beta Blocker or an Ace inhibitor and my full sexual prowess has returned to the max. A pharmacist at Walgreens told me about Losartan. Check it out, I hope you will have the same awesome results!

Do you have kidney problems? I was reading up on the kind of bp meds you are taking now and so far I have learned that a drug such as Losartan is prescribed for bp patients who have suffered kidney failure. The reason why my boyfriend is taking Toprol and Ramipril is because a small part of his heart had been damaged.

Losartan is also for people who have had kidney and heart problems. You asked what BP drugs do not cause ED. I had problems in that area with Lisinopril, Mitopropolol, and the other beta blockers, and ace inhibitors with erection problems. Although I have no kidney problems or immediate heart problems, I find that I have no side effects from Losartan 75mg.per day. Check out Google for their interpretation for Losartan. May your husband have good luck like I have had!!

missjb4, I am assuming you mistook one of our favorite nurses answers. Please do not be offended at her answer. She is doin the best she can with the info provided. There can be many reasons for erectile dysfunction, & if anyone knows about these things a Registered Nurse would. She means no harm & is only trying to help you. She is one of the most respected members on here too. Just thought I'd clue you in. You didn't give all pertinent medical info to give a definate answer & sometimes that is necessary to give out good & correct info to help people. Laura has not a mean bone in her body. I think you misundrstood her answer is all. All is well... Mary

Dear "Anonymous", I was offended at the nurse's answer. Some of us want to have a night of fun once in a while. Maybe it's not important to her but that's her issue. She should not impose her judgment on anyone here asking a legitimate question.

Missjb, Since you didn't mention which type of BP med he was on... would be nice to know, but ACE Inhibitors should not cause any sexual dysfunction because it blocks aldosterone. This pathway has nothing to do with sexual function, but a lot to do with hbp. My hubby is on one and I am another, no problems. I will add one caveat, anyone can have a reaction to anything (medication) at anytime. There are common side effects and not so common side effects. Have him check with his PCP, tell him what's going on, get a different med. That's the best thing to do. Peace, Hippie

Good answer Laura. I take a beta blocker & so does my hubby. We also take a water pill, & it greatly affects his libido, but when even a hug hurts us both, it's ok!Our health is too important to have a night of fun, but possibly not wake up in the morning due to a heart attack or stroke! Just a thought... Mary

Missjb, is it possible that if your hubby is overweight or something that he could lose the weight? It can greatly affect HBP. If that's not part of the problem then meds may be his only choice, but not all affect the libido. Have him speak with his doc as our friend Laura suggested... Mary

Pardon me if you are somewhat irate about not enough info to your liking regarding this question and yes I will gladly tell you what he takes! He takes Toprol and Ramapril! Does that answer your question? I love my boyfriend very much and I am trying to do as much research as possible to give him help and support with this issue since he does not have enough time to look all this up himself because he works very hard by having two jobs, so please excuse me if I may not have given all the details! Thanks for your tips though!

I can assure you I am not irate about any question asked here on this site. This is a place to exchange ideas, get information, it is a non-judgemental spot in cyberspace. I am truly sorry if I offended you in any way. It seems that your boyfriend is on both a beta-blocker and an ACE Inhibitor. I'm at a loss as far as suggesting another BP med. There are others yo chose from like Verapamil, a calcium channel blocker and others. At this point, I think I would call the nurse at his docs office and talk to her. Maybe she can get in to talk to the doc regarding changing meds if your boyfriend doesn't have the time himself Just trying to answer your question. Peace, Confused Hippie
