My husband has cirrhosis of the liver and must take lactulose 30 mL 2 x's day, but the taste literally makes him ill. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to reduce the awful taste?
Are there any ways to make lactulose easier to take, i.e., taste better?

I take 30 mL twice a day. I like most people don't like the taste. But having had a stay in hospital because I skipped a few doses was far worse than the taste of lactulose. My problem is the number of bowel movements I have on any given day (can often be as high as 9) but normally sits around 4-5 and I feel that I'm constantly on the toilet.
In our case, it's the pineapple in whatever sports drink, et al. you add to it that makes it NO problem serving it up and seeing it go down so as to avoid going to hospital after they go crazy, then all they have is Lactulose, which of course takes a week or so to correct the problems caused. Prevention is best & key.
My wife finds lactulose quite tolerable when mixed with pink grapefruit juice that contains pulp. This helps with both the taste and texture. She is usually quite sensitive to foods, beverages, or medications with tastes or textures that she doesn't like--and lactulose is bad on both counts. But she can take the lactulose mixed with pink grapefruit juice with barely any complaint.
If you can't take grapefruit juice, I would suggest some other strongly flavored juice with pulp. Or perhaps you could mix up your own substitute.
I add some lemon juice and then mix it with 8oz of Lemon Lime Gatorade. Seems to cancel out the sweetness.
That sounds like a amazing and brilliant idea it also can restore potassium and electrolytes lost by lactolose my only question is can the acidity of the lemon juice irritate the bowels or cause scarring mixed with it.
Okay researched lemon juice great on digestive tract regulation. Tested with 30 ml 10g/15ml solution added 1/8 cup lemon juice 3/4 cup grape powerade. It definitely goes down easy and masks the disgusting taste and texture! I am so thankful for your post!
I have to take this same medication and agree that it's nasty. My nurse in the hospital this last trip told that most people mix it with chocolate milk and that drowns out the nasty flavor. I have yet to try it but it is on my list of things to try. I have tried juce and that just makes it worse as does water and plain milk.
Usually they recommend to improve the taste of lactulose, mix the dose with one-half glass of water, milk, or fruit juice.
Hope this helps?
