Taking 6mg of xanax for many many many years - prescribed. Has anyone else taken this high of a dose? I just helps me feel normal but wondering about tapering down.
Has anyone taken 6mg of Xanax a day?

I am prescribed 2 mg 3x a day. I do not take it all the time, only on bad days. I’m a little agoraphobic, and on days I stay home, I only take 3 mg at night to help me sleep. When I have to run errands, I take an extra .5. I recently had outpatient surgery (in a scary spot) with a local and I was awake and I took 2 extra mg just before the surgery. I wasn’t freaked out at all. I use it only as needed. If I take more than the prescribed amount because of extreme stress (I was rear ended and the legal stuff is hell), I found the next day I get rebound anxiety. I only take brand name Xanax, as the generics are junk. Because I vary my dosages, I’ve not had serious withdrawal symptoms. There are days I can go without it completely. A lot of doctors refuse to prescribe that high, but my PCP understands and I’m okay. I have reactions to most meds, and Xanax is the only one that doesn’t have side effects for me.
Hi, crazygirl!
The maximum daily dose is usually 10mg/day but after taking 6mg/day for years your system may be
habituated to the drug. If you want to reduce your dose only do it under the strict supervision of your doctor with a recommended tapering dosage schedule.
