My main issue is GAD, with some depression. I was a long-timer on Zoloft but it stopped working for me. I've was on Lexapro 5mg for 4 weeks, 10mg for 4 weeks and now have been on 15mg for 4+ weeks. Things have gotten a little better, I've had a couple stretches of 4-7 days where I felt awesome and normal. But now I'm mostly anxious and depressed again. I've read some accounts where going up to 20mg was *the magic bullet*. I'm afraid to increase because every time I've increased I've had a couple weeks of worse anxiety and depression... and what if 20mg DOESN'T work for me? Any success stories or experiences to share?
Has anyone had success with upping dose to 20mg Lexapro for anxiety and depression?

Yes, I am working with my psychiatrist through this all. I guess I'm just looking for some anecdotal encouragement that 20mg might be what I need, and I'm interested to hear people's experiences with Lexapro in general.

How are you doing now nervycat?
I am in a very similar situation. Lexapro worked for me for 12 years at 20mg. Like I felt completely normal. I lowered about 3 years ago to 10mg and was ok until February when my panic disorder came back in full force. My general doctor tried adding some other medicines that just made me feel worse.
Now I’m just trying the increase to 20mg and it’s been 3 weeks now. I think I might be doing slightly better, but still not good. I finally get into the psychiatrist this Thursday after waiting for a couple months. Not sure if I should stick out the higher dose or if he’s going to want me to switch to another antidepressant.
I also have general anxiety. I had been taking Lexapro 10 mg for 8 years. A few weeks ago, after massive amounts of stress, I ended up in the emergency room with a severe panic attack that I could not control. I think that my body got too used to that dose. My doctor upped my Lexapro to 20 mg about 4 days ago. I'm feeling a lot of anxiety. I feel as if I have good days and bad days. Is this normal? To feel more anxious with the upping of the Lexapro? Has anyone had this problem?
Hi there, I just wondered how you went. I’ve been on 10 mg for years now and felt like my anxiety worsened after having my second baby. So they upped me to 20mg. I’ve had terrible side effects too. Feel really really sick and want to vomit, feel like I’m more anxious, and just have no motivation really at all, not like I used too. Did it get better for you?? I feel like the jump from 10 to 20 is too much
I upped my lexapro from 10 to 15mg two days ago and my anxiety has been out of control. I’m losing my mind, having panic attacks, can’t sit still, heart palpitations. How long did it take you to stop feeling the heightened anxiety when you increased your dose?
People tolerate medicine differently. My Pyschiatrist told me that 110lb female might need the max dose of 20 mg of Lexapro to achieve full benefit. A 220lb male might be able to get theraputic benefit at 10mg. It all depends on how your body metabloizes these types of meds. I would strongly encourage you to talk with your doctor about increasing your dose. I've been on 20 mg of Lexapro for 9 years and have tolerated it quite well and it has worked for me at the 20mg dose. Unfortunatley I've had to add another med with the Lexapro because my body has gotten so imune to the med that is not working as well. After a long time on an SSRI, I understand this can happen. I believe they call it SSRI poop out (for a better terminology) Again, we are all different plus this med takes 6-8 weeks to get fully on board. Remember if he increases it to 20, you need to give it time to see if it works for you. Good luck. I hope you get to feeling better soon.
Hi, I am also having trouble with an increase from 20mg - 30mg 3 weeks now and still up and down will I ever level out??
i take 20 mg. daily for general & social anxiety. i dont have a problem with it. i started off with 10 mg. several years ago but it wasnt doing the whole job. dr. increased it to 20 mg. daily and it made a great difference with me. i have no side effects from it
Thanks for your answer! I started 20mg 4 days ago and the transition is going ok so far.
Did increasing make you feel yucky at first? If so how long before you started feeling better??
MtNagel yes, for the first week after an increase I definitely felt really tired and weird feeling, then things leveled out. I ended up going up to 30mg of Lexapro, and I've been on that for over 4 months now. I didn't see dramatic improvement until I started taking methylfolate (I take 200mcg but some people take a lot more), and addressed my undiagnosed sleep apnea.
The methylfolate started helping by about 10 weeks after starting it (IF that's what's helping me), the better sleep helped me within about 10 days.
I am struggling with heightened anxiety with my lexapro increase from 10 to 20mgs. Im just praying that as soin as the medication levels out, the anxiety will subside.
Well, it should be stated this is a decision made by the prescribing Dr after what is hopefully an ongoing consult. I can say increasing is not always the best thing to do, and at best most of these meds make the anxiety feel worse, also, this higher the dose the harder it is to decrease or quit, a lot of time has to go into that and again it's the Dr who should be calling the shots. Beware just because someone online posts a magic bullet scenario, especially if they self-medicated w/o the Dr involved and again, these med especially differ so much just for us, let alone for someone else.
I'd get with the Dr and recite all you posted so he is aware of the concerns, we certainly wasn't you feeling better than this without consequences.
