I know you're not supposed to be drinking any alcohol on this medication, I normally don't however I had a small lightly mixed drink with alcohol today and I was super nauseous and ready to vomit. Is this a common symptom with this drug? Has anyone felt like this after drinking on Wellbutrin?
Does anyone feel sick when drinking alcohol on Wellbutrin?

Hi. I have been on Wellbutrin off and on for about 10 yrs. I DO find that I cannot drink much while on the drug, even though I'm not much of a drinker at all. Sometimes I've had a drink or two (usually a frou-frou drink, as I call mixed drinks) with friends and was ok with one, nursed through out the evening. Mostly, when I've drank more than one, drank too quickly or a straight shot, I was so miserable with a really bad hangover. Sometimes the hangover feeling was almost immediately following, if i had a shot and sometimes not til the next morning. The worst was with wine. I was dizzy, vomiting and the headache was severe, like a bad migraine. This after drinking even modestly has totally turned me off to drinking and I just tell friends I just don't drink, period. I don't like the gamble about whether I will be really messed up and dysfunctional or not. Its definitely the Wellbutrin and alcohol that does it for me.
I think this is more common than not and that Wellbutrin drinkers probably think they've just had way too much drink the night before, without really knowing the direct effects of the combination. This drug DEFINITELY increases the effects of alcohol, so beware.
When I took it I noticed that I could not drink more then two beers. I would get sick to my stomach and not want to drink alcohol.
Hi gem,
G gave you great advice.
The literature states to "avoid alcohol or limit intake".
Every person have different reactions to these meds.
My two cents...
If it promotes compliance with long term meds, it's good to feel "normal" in your lifestyle.
Diluting wine with soda water in a nice wine glass makes socializing easier to avoid questions about why are you not having a drink.
I know there may be negative feedback about refraining totally.
Balance in life sometimes makes all the difference.
I'd probably avoid any alcohol until you have fully adapted to the medication.
Best wishes,
:-)
Wellbutrin increases the effects of alcohol. Drinking with Wellbutrin is ok for many people, but others have experienced seizures while combining the two. That is why there is a black box warning that comes with Wellbutrin. It would be good to address your concerns and your personal experience with your doctor and see what he says.
It certainly increases the effects of alcohol, so be careful
