I just started Contrave and am not sure if it's causing CP and anxiety. I really want this to work for me but I feel just like I did on Phentermine. YUCK!
Will these side effects wear off? How does the Contrave work to make you lose weight??
Does anyone else feel anxious and chest pains when taking Contrave?

I had to stop the first week I started taking 2. I had such a horrible feeling of dread. Such a shame as it was the first thing I tried that actually worked.
I had been on contrave for a month and couldn't stand it anymore. I'm so sad because I thought it would give me a nice boost with my weightloss. When I finally was on the full dose for a week ... I couldn't concentrate on anything and my anxiety was through the roof and I was also depressed at the same time!!! I called my doc ASAP and it took a week to wean off of it. I couldnt get off of it fast enough!!
I'm almost done with my second week (1pill in am and 1 in pm), and the last two nights I have had difficulty getting to sleep. My heart is racing and shortly after I fell asleep, I would suddenly wake and feel as though my heart stopped. It's been awful, and I'm not sure what the cause is. I see the other posts, and the first night this happened I had 2 cans of sparkling water!! I usually only drink plain water. I'm supposed to increase dose in 2 days, I am a little worried. What time of day does everyone take their pills? Thanks in advance.
If you are drinking caffeine that is probably what's causing it. Also the sparkling waters also make me nervous. Now I drink decaf coffee, water w/lemon and tea. For some reason tea does not bother me if I just drink a glass of it.
I was on phentermine for about 4 months back in 2013, lost about 18lbs. Over 2 yrs gained it all back. Because of the side effects (jaw clenching, jitters, racing heart) I didn't want to use it again. Started Contrave this past Tuesday, my Dr. Apparently didn't read that you slowly start with 1 pill week one & increase by 1 each week because script said take 2 pills twice a day. Well to say the least that first night was not pleasant. I thought my heart was going to pound out of my chest, I couldn't stop fidgeting and felt like every time I tried to fall asleep I would stop breathing (think that was an anxiety attack.) So thinking that it was that I had taken 4 pills on day one it was just too much for my system I waited until Saturday (yesterday) to begin the right way. Took a pill around noon, I slept in so was late taking it.
Felt pretty good all day not hungry but went to dinner had a margarita (didn't even taste like it had alcohol in it & trust me I'm not a drinker so if there is a tiny bit I can taste it) half a chicken quesadilla & a few chips. Went to bed around 11:00 & was having same feeling as before. So here it is 2:13am & I'm wide awake because I feel like my heart is about to beat out of my chest, I'm fidgety and cannot sleep because it's freaking me out. I actually took my blood pressure and it's not up and my pulse is normal so I know I'm just working myself up. I actually took a Xanax to calm myself down. Now I don't know what to do. Do I continue taking it? I drink a lot of tea through the day, could it be too much caffeine? I really want to lose weight, 20 pounds is my goal, but don't know if I can go through this another night. Since the side effects kicked in 12 hours after the fact maybe I should try doing the reverse dose & start week one with 1 pill in pm and see if that helps? I did also notice my vision the last couple days has been worse but thought maybe I had just been on my devices too long.
I had the same thing happen to me. I actually started to feel dizzy a day or two before. Then one night, 2nd week in Sept. the exact same thing. I was almost asleep, felt like I wasn't breathing woke up, tight chest, fluttering feeling, then I freaked out. I thought I was having a heart attack. BP and pulse were fine. I started Contrave in June 2015, I hadn't had any issues until Sept. I was taking two pills in the am and one in the evening. I stopped taking Contrave for a few weeks. I tried to start taking it again, and noticed that I have the same feeling, just not as extreme. Let me know what how you are, since you posted this almost a year ago.
I feel like I'm going crazy! Anxious but also a scared like feeling. My mind won't stay focused. Can go to sleep but dream crazy dreams, then when I wake up I feel scared somewhat.
This is the end of my second month on Contrave. The first month went very well, I lost weight and stopped smoking a win-win. But this month I've experienced anxiety and suspicion. I've almost ruined my relationship with my bf. I don't know what to do now. Sounds like from the previous posts that this maybe common.
This south very common. Since I'm single my suspicion were always medical. The other day when I showered I felt a "lump." OMG... I have cancer! And all kinds of other stuff. I stopped and yesterday and today have been the most I've eaten in a day in months. I believe my appetite is beginning to return. I'll monitor it. And if so I'll try to manage my own weightloss without the Contrave. I didn't like how it made me feel. But it worked great for the weightloss.
I was taking Contrave for approximately 3 months. I started experiencing terrible anxiety and no appetite at all. The weight lose was great. 24 lbs. But the anxiety scared me so I stopped taking it. However, two weeks later and I'm still anxious and still not much of an appetite.
When does the medication wear off!!! How long after stopping the medication will these symptoms last?
I have been on Contrave for about 6 weeks. My first week I definitely had some side effects similar to what you are experiencing. Additionally, I was very restless at night. But that has pretty much worn off. Occasionally, I will have a moment of panicky feelings, but it swiftly goes away. And I sometimes have a bit of nausea, but again, the goes away within about an hour or so.
Having said all that, the side effects have never felt in any way serious and I am extremely pleased that I've been on this. It has helped me even more than I had hoped. The ability to say, I've had enough, and not over-indulge and not even finish all the food on my plate has been incredible. My desire to drink alcohol has dropped, as well. So far, I am down 15 pounds and it has been (almost) effortless.
Thing is, side effects may be different for different people, so you should always listen to your body. If it feels wrong, don't do it.
Yes first day within 3 hrs feel shaky anxious and slight pain in chest...
Also restless sleep. Jittery the second morning. Not sure want to take another think skipping a day... don't like this feeling.
The side effects will hopefully wear off over time. I still have headache off and on, irritable, and some stomach upset but not all the time. I still feel like I want to eat but when I go to the frig I stand and stare and nothing appeals to me. We went out to eat on Saturday night. For the first time in my entire life, I took one bite out of a hamburger and never took another. I just did not CARE about it. Took it home in a go box and my husband ate it the next day. I think this must be how "normal " people feel about food but I'm not sure. Contrave seems to block the cravings and the pleasure of food. I've been eating salads with tuna, protein drinks, etc. I am very hopeful.
Yes. I felt super anxious on it. I had 3 panic attacks in less than a week and I Never get those. I also had trouble focusing my eyes on the computer screen or a paper in front of me. I called my doctor about my side effects and she told me to stop taking it. It did seem to work for weight loss but I was too miserable to enjoy the small success. I ended up lasting 5 days on Contrave.
Just curious, were you prone to panic and anxiety before? I'm considering taking this med. Thanks!
The sharing of your experience is very helpful. It's nice to know I'm not alone in my experience. I've taken 6 pills (one a day for six days) and I have felt very anxious. Today I felt nausea, dizziness, and as if a panic attack were coming on. Also, I was clenching my jaw a lot. I wasn't hungry though! But, with all those side effects, I won't be taking tomorrow's dosage. I agree with you, the "success" is not worth the side effects. I'm seeing my doctor tomorrow.
I have been taking Contrave for only 3 days now. While I don't feel anxious I do feel tightness in my chest (chest pain). This really worries me and its hard to find many posts about this drug. I have no history of HBP.
I did notice while being on this medication anytime after I eat I feel extremely sleepy!! Does this happen to anyone else?
I started Contrave on March 6, 2015, and I am experiencing the same problem, tightness and cramping in my chest. While the medicine seems to be working already, as far as appetite control, these side effects are scary and uncomfortable. I was on Phentermine once a day before I started Contrave, and do not know about taking drugs together, does anyone take both and if so, how is it for you? My Dr. told me that the medicine is too new to the market to determine drug interactions, anyone have any experience with both?
Hi Laura, I have had this same problem since taking Contrave. I find myself clenching my jaw more so during the day, not sure if I am doing it in my sleep. I also feel that my stress level has not been any different. I am hoping that this is a temporary side effect and will subside shortly. I know how you feel, it is uncomfortable. I have just finished my third week of Contrave and am happy with my results so far.
I've been on Contrave for five weeks now and am very happy with the results, BUT I have noticed the last couple of weeks (probably since I started 2 in am, 2 in pm), I've had some anxiety and feel a little jittery at times. I've also noticed I clench my jaw a lot and have to make a conscious effort to relax my jaw. Anyone else experience that?? I saw some people post that their se's eventually subside, so I am hoping thatll also be the case for me as well!
Laura, I've suffered from nighttime teeth clenching for a while. I have noticed a couple of nights I woke up clinching and/or jaw pain in the morning. It's hard to tell if this is Contrave or my regular stress. I don't feel it's gotten any worse since Contrave. Are you clenching your jaw all or most of the day? That's does sound quite painful.
Hi shasha! I didn't do this before contrave and my stress level is the same, if not less. I notice it all day. I can be at work and realize I'm clenching it. Same thing when I fall asleep and in the morning. Fortunately, I haven't had any headaches, just sore around my jaw area. i have to go for my 2 month checkup the beginning of feb, so I hope it has subsided by then...
Yes! I notice the clenching of the jaw too. I am in the 2nd week (I took 2 days off until I could talk to my doctor). However, today, I felt very jittery, clenching my jaw, and felt like I was going to faint. I also felt very uncomfortable around people because of the symptoms I was experiencing. When my jaw started clenching and I was jittery, I felt a lot of anxiety. I'm afraid to take tomorrow's dose. Did the jaw clenching and jitteriness go away for you?
I have been on Contrave for a little over 2 mos. I find myself clenching my jaws all the time. Sometimes have to make a conscious effort not to. I thought I was going crazy until I read this post. I take Xanax for anxiety attacks and on occasion have to take one due to the jaw clenching. I think that is the only side effect i have. Every now and then I get a really bad case of cotton mouth. I guess it works out, because it helps with my daily liquid intake. This is really the first "diet" pill I have ever taken,so I guess overall I am pretty satisfied. I just wish I had something to compare with.
I've been on Contrave for 5 days and so far it has really worked to control my appetite. I was pessimistic and cautious at first b/c it's a new combo drug. And while each drug has individually been prescribed for years, as a combo drug, data is relatively new. My doc and I will watch closely to see how I respond. Also, I am re-starting my martial arts training program and have put myself on a low cal diet. I don't want to be reliant on drugs for rest of my life.
That being said, I can unequivocally say, this drug is working. On NYE we went to my fav restaurant and I had to practically make myself eat AND drink wine. I didn't finish anything. It was weird for me b/c special occasions, like NYE, can warrant a pass on life restrictions :-).
The down side... I was on Phentermine for years b4 effects wore off. I don't feel the jitteriness with Contrave that I felt with Phen. Some days I felt I couldn't sit still on Phen. However, I did experience insomnia the first 2 days which went away. The only SE I'm having issues with started today - dizziness, nausea, and a general feeling of malaise... all day. To the point of only wanting to lie down, which is not like me. I felt bad for my 5yr old who really wanted to play today. I'll stay on for a couple more days to see if it passes. But if not, I'll have to stop taking it. And that sucks b/c it's really working to curb my cravings and appetite.
I have been on Contrave since the end of October and I still have a lot of nausea and headaches often. However, like you, I am having success and feel just like you did on NYE. So, I'm willing to put up with the SE for now. Just as an FYI, in week 3-4 I did have a lot of "jitteriness" and felt sort of anxious. However that SE has gone away now. Oh, and the sleepiness has also gone away. :-)
Did you go to the maximum dose right away?
Carben, it's really good to know that this is working for you as well. And thanks for the heads up on weeks 3-4 jitters. I will prepare myself and not overreact lol. Question, have you changed your eating habits or exercise frequency significantly to obtain results?
Suebeth, no I started last Monday taking 1 pill in AM. This week it's 1 in AM 1 in PM. It ramps up to 4 pills a day. This week has been very mild. In fact since I first posted the dizziness has subsided. And like Carben described the sleepiness has waned. Have you started?
Yes I've started, I'm on 1 pill am, 1 pill pm, tomorrow I start 2 pills am. Today I feel much better, more alert, no headache or stomach problems. I guess my body is getting used to it. I notice some appetite suppression but not a lot, I'm guessing it will require the full dose for the meds to do the job.
ShaShaGalore : I haven't changed anything intentionally. I don't exercise at all (I am TRYING to change that) but my eating changed completely -- it's not that I TRIED to change my eating, but I don't even think about food at all anymore until my stomach growls. I used to think about lunch while I was eating bfast and then plan dinner while eating lunch, etc. and snack while watching TV in the p.m. but now I don't even think about eating at all. So strange. I really, really used to live to eat and now I eat to live. When I want a soda/pop, I have one (aka meaning I don't deny myself anything I really want) but it's just that I don't crave it like I used to. And I used to go to fast food restaurants about 2x/week or more while out running errands, but now I actually forget about them. Like I said, I have never, ever in my life (46 years) felt this way and I LOVE it. That being said, I just took myself down to three pills (2 in a.m.
and 1 in p.m.) because I was SO nauseous (even puking at one point) and now I seem to be going much better. I am really, really hoping that my love of food doesn't come back because I'm only taking 3 pills.
Carben, thank you for sharing. I've had similar response to food. It's crazy! I started 2 AM 1 PM and my nausea returned, just like you mentioned. The two pills also made me foggy. I'm hoping my body will adjust to 3 but I just can't see going all the way to 4 pills a day. I may settle right here. Lol.
