I am low on vitamin b 12 and my dr recommended I take it. Also low on vit d 3. I took vit d 3 and b 12 this morning and feel like my anxiety is worse than it normally is. Side note I'm also taking cymbalta for 3 weeks and experience increased anxiety from that right now as a side effect. I take Xanax to offset the anxiety and took a xan this morning before the b 12 and still had tons of anxiety. So wondering if the b 12 could be the cause? I took 5000 mcg of the b 12. that's a lot too I think this is the last thing I need more anxiety!
Thanks for your help
Has anyone experience increased anxiety after taking b12 5000 supplement ?

"Yes, taking excessively high doses of Vitamin B12 can potentially cause anxiety as a side effect, particularly when taking megadoses beyond the recommended daily intake; this is because high levels of B12 can disrupt the nervous system and lead to symptoms like restlessness and mood changes, including anxiety.
Key points to remember:
Normal B12 levels are safe:
Most people do not experience anxiety from taking standard recommended doses of Vitamin B12.
Overdose symptoms:
Taking very high doses of B12 can lead to side effects like anxiety, insomnia, dizziness, headaches, nausea, and facial redness.
Consult your doctor:
If you experience anxiety after taking B12 supplements, it's important to consult your doctor to adjust your dosage or discuss alternative options."
I have same experience using 5000 mcg of B12. When I stop supplement anxiety stopped. I now take only 100mcg in my multivitamin.
This helps me feel better as I experience a great deal of depression not long after taking B12 liquid sublingual drops. I thought I’d lose my mind! Last spring I was finally able to wean off of Xanax, which no doctors told me was habit forming! What a relief but I began to wonder if I made a mistake after this terrible depression and anxiety hit after B12. Since I have the MTHFR genetic factor I do not convert folic acid properly which is necessary for B12 to absorb and work correctly. This is a struggle that may contribute to many people taking too much B12 or the wrong type. I’m still researching but wondered if anyone else was hurting like this?
As a Vegan for three years now, I have had to take Vit B12. I have read Dr. Michael Greger’s books and receive his Nutrition Facts.org. Research messages on my emails. After having blood work done, I found that the recommended 1,000mcg/day is sufficient. That is also recommended for my age group. Check out some well know sources, as Vegans must supplement with it. No need to overload if not necessary.
What surprised me on searching for info on that dosage, I had to actually type in Can B12 cause anxiety. Thank you so much for the info.
I know it's been a year but wanted to ask how quickly things improved for you after it got worse? Thank you.
Late response but the same here. I started taking the 5000 mcg lozenge of B12 about 10 days ago. Had the same result. Thanks for posting. In my search for that dosage, all I found was yes it's safe. I beg to differ. Same result with the shot but the lozenge was even worse.
Should have mentioned, mine started around day 4 or 5 and got worse.
"Vitamin B12
Most people associate B12 with health, energy, and vitality, so it's another vitamin found in high concentrations in many energy formulas. Like B6, high doses of B12 (>1,000 mcg) increase neurotransmitter levels, and as a result, have stimulating properties. This can be beneficial for people experiencing mood disorders like depression, ***though it can sometimes result in an "overshoot" and cause restlessness, anxiety, worry, and difficulty sleeping***.
For most people, this isn't a supplement you need to take every day unless you have a diagnosed deficiency or are using it therapeutically for chronic fatigue or another condition."
I was told I was low on vitamin b12 and was to get 5 injections After first one I was perfect Got second the following week and had diarrhoea and couldn’t eat Went back to Doctor and he said he thought nothing to do with b12 injections and gave me another one Thst was four weeks ago and I have terrible anxiety and do not want to touch food I’m hoping it will pass It is the worse experience of my life
Yes I have. With out a doubt. I have had B12 in various mulitvitamins on an off over a period of a couple of years until I realised it was the B12 that was doing me harm.
I have then a year or so later taken other supplements and was unwell with them bc they had B12. If I take any other types of herbs and supplements that don't have B12 but with other vitamins, I am fine. So I generally try to get vitamins without B12.
I just did it again accidentally and the same thing happened after a couple of days. Which is what led me to your blog.
Having excess B12 may not be good for everyone. It certainly isnt good for me.
Stay attuned to your body and stop any vitamins if you feel worse. And figure out which one is the culprit.
I know this thread is old. However, I too experienced extreme anxiety (I actually think I got seretonin syndrome) from my first tabled 1000 mcg of b12. No one believed me but I was crawling out of my skin for two days before I went to the emergency room for Benadryl. I then was admitted to the hospital two days later because my dizziness and leg weakness from my low b12 was unbearable. They decided to give me an injection of the b12 because according to them it would get absorbed differently. Well they had to call a rapid response. Trying to see a doctor that understands and can come up with a solution is like pulling teeth. I need to treat the deficiency but can’t handle the b12 it was making me insane. I tried to cut a methylcobalamin in quarters today. I took a quarter and I felt a little jittery but so far not a full blown attack. I am worried though this won’t be enough.
Has anyone figured out how to get the b12 without coming out of their skin? I should mention same thing happens when I have reglan, compazine, Zoloft and St. John’s wort. Please anyone with answers? I want my life back
Hello... I know this is an older thread, but I wanted to see if anyone found alternatives? I eat plant-based, and I know that I am on the low side with vitamin B12, but even the smallest dose makes my anxiety attacks so much worse. My heart races, and I feel lightheaded, etc. My plant based physician said that our bodies only need 2.4 mcg of B12 per day. The supplements at 1,000 mcg or 5,000 mcg are like 16,000% of the daily requirements (seriously, look on the back of the bottle). So I have a chewable vitamin B12 tablet, and I bite off the tiniest amount every day, like so small otherwise it will exacerbate my panic attacks. I have tried all of the different types too, and they all do the same thing :(

Omg this post is from 2016 but still SO IMPORTANT in almost 2020. Thank you so much for sharing, it helped me understand I wasn't having a crazy anxiety attack out of the blue. I took one 2,500mcg b12 and it drove me completely nuts! I usually have anxiety and take prozac for it, but it's never this bad. Who knew too much B12 could have so much impact?? Again, thank you for making everything clearer for me!
I’ve been having anxiety as well after taking liquid b 12, I diluted the dose down to 125MCG’s and it’s still making me anxious. I’m gonna keep trying because my level is so low, and I’m having tingling in my arms, legs, hands, and feet.
Hey thanks for your answer!! I wanted to ask you, are you really sure it is due to the vitamin B12?
Hello everyone! I have increased anxiety too since I took B12, can anyone update how they are feeling after they stopped taking it? Do you guys feel better? Thank you so much for your answer!
Hello! I have been taking 5,000mcg of B12 for two years and have been experiencing high levels of anxiety the entire time. I’ve always been anxious but never like this. It’s effected my appetite and I feel nauseated all the time. There is a constant knot in my stomach. This is the first time I’ve considered it may be the B12. I had no idea B12 worked similarly to SSRIs. I was taking Lexapro and had HORRIBLE reactions. I had every symptom listed - I was having full blown panic attacks and I’ve never had them before. Dizzy, nauseated, heart racing, cold sweats, I felt like my body was buzzing, it was awful. If B12 can do anything like SSRIs then I am stopping them today!
I am wondering if anyone can provide an update on how they are doing and how long it took before you felt better after stopping B12 supplements? Any other advice? Can I get it out of my system faster somehow?
Thanks for your help! It makes me feel so much better to know this may be the cause (there’s hope!) and there are other people out there experiencing the same thing.
Hi Winnie! I REALLY cross my fingers that you will answer to me, how do you feel now? better? and how long after stopping the b12? Thank you for your answer :)
Hi Audrey,
I am feeling significantly less anxious but the problem is I’ve been doing a lot to decrease my anxiety so I don’t know how much of my progress is due to stopping the B12. I’ve been practicing mindfulness using the Headspace app - they have lots of sessions on anxiety. I’ve also started to do yoga using the app called Down Dog. I’ve been eating a little bit healthier and drinking more water. And the biggest help has been starting to go to a counselor where she does a lot of work with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I would recommend all of these things if you have anxiety, they have helped so much! I will be getting my B12 levels checked and talking to my doctor about the impact of B12 on anxiety in the next few weeks for my regular physical so I’ll try to give another update after that.
Hey Winnie! Thanks a lot for your answer, I am really glad to hear that your anxiety has decreased that much! let us know what the professionals say about the link concerning B12 and anxiety though, because I really feel so much more anxious ever since I took the vitamin B12... thank you so much again and have a great evening!
Good Morning,
I have been taking a B-12 1000mcg Tablet supplement for months and I've been fine. But recently we moved and I felt a bit more sluggish, so I purchased a B-12 5000mcg liquid sublingual. I've been taking it for over a week and I have been so overwhelmed with nothing but anxiety symptoms and mood swings. It was terrible, I too felt like I was crawling out of my skin. I couldn't understand why the sudden change, I had bad anxiety up to about 5 years ago and had to control it with Xanax for Years. I thought I was going to have to start again. I woke up this morning thinking, Is it the high dose of B-12? And thank God I found this, I now know I'm not alone. I'll wait a few days and go back to my 1000mcg tablet.
Thank You Everyone.
