I have missed mulitple times (seperately) and was wondering how it has affected others as well as how they overcome these effects.

I missed two days of 300 mg/day of Effexor and my symptoms were:
1. Cold Sweats;
2. feeling hot; and
3. Most notably, I have the same feeling you get when you go over a hill fast in a car. This started about 36 hours after my last dose.
4. Also had depressive thoughts and was easily angered
I’m not sure why I’m looking at this forum because I know what the effects of missing a dose are (because it happens to me about once a month) and I hate myself for it every time but reading this just makes me feel better that other people forget to take it sometimes too.
I take 225 xl daily and when I miss it for 24 hours, I get so so dizzy, vomit, brain zaps, sweat profusely, cold sweats, nightmares, irritability, just horrible malaise. The problem is that when I take the missed dose, I’m so dizzy and throwing up that I’m not sure how long I need to try extremely hard not to vomit so I will digest the medication. How long does it usually take for you guys for the side effects to go away once you take the medicine again? I have thrown up before within 30 minutes and I know that’s not enough to digest it so it’s a continual cycle of doom all because I forget once in a while :/
I take 150 mg dose (generic HCL ER) daily. Every once in a while, if if miss a dose and don't catch it within 4-6 hours, I get dizzy, especially with movement. I usually keep a stash in various places just in case, but it does take a while (2 - 4 hours) for the meds to catch up. If I'm unable to dose myself within 24 hours, I typically get really drowsy, dizzier, and my ears ring. The dizziness often leads to low level nausea.
Additional info - Been taking my dose for . . . wow . . 14 years. Time's fun when you're having flies. . . or something.
I’ve been on Effexor for a couple of years now at max 300mg daily but currently 150mg daily. My moods fluctuate terribly but I think after reading this thread that my random depressive evenings are possibly due to missing doses.
I seem to have the biggest issue remembering my morning dose as I’m always in a rush but recently had gotten much better at remembering. Today I missed my first pill in a while (a week or so) and after a pretty stable week I keep breaking down in tears this evening. It’s such a similar sort of ‘depressed about nothing much’ I was going into before when I would forget regularly. I also had really bad nausea and struggled eating which hasn’t happened in a while too.
Quite amazing how quickly it can effect you, this is my cue to start carrying some emergency backups in my bag/ car and save myself some tears!
I have been using Effexor to treat cluster high Aura migraine headaches. (Suggested by my neurologist.) I've had a great loss to family and had to step up giving personal care to a close adult family member. The stress and the odd weekend without the cleared re-ordered persciption has lead me to this site.
I'm dizzy, not a migraine type aura dizzy, and neauseated and puking.. (not projectile vomiting my migraine normal) So looking back, along with food not digesting, very profuse sweating, dizziness and an UNWELL felling I see that this is my side affects situation. All suggested ways of preventing a future reoccurrence are noted... Thank you.
Just don't miss doses and you won't have to worry about it. All you can do is take your next scheduled dose and ride it out. Get a daily pill box that you fill every week and put it next to your toothbrush...
If I miss ONE dose I have horrible side effects. I am taking 150mg of Effexor. IF I miss a dose I can not even function the next day! When I miss I will have headaches, sleep all day, stomach problems, muscle pain, dizziness, and cloudy thinking. When I do miss a dose I am always extremely shocked by my body's response. I am so frightened of the day I will actually have to stop taking this medication
I have been taking 300mg daily for around 9 years. The best thing to do is to try and take this medication around the same time each day. If I'm literally a few hours out with my dose then I become angry, violent, upset, I feel sick, I have diahorea, severe headaches, dizziness, and tremors in my face. It's a really strong drug. My doctor one tried to reduce my down to 225 daily. Within 24 hours I was suicidal. Don't mess with this medication
Yes fully agree with Lynsey - this drug has what is called a short half life - meaning if not taken at regular intervals the good effect will quickly subside leading to side effects such as extreme nightmares, sweats, headaches, disorientation, panic attacks, anger and possible suicidal ideas.
I've been on 150mg for about 10 months now and miss doses occasionally when I forget to pick up my prescription. Found this forum today 7 hours after I normally take my dose because I have the worst headache and it happens every time! I thought I was just headache-prone but on reading this I'm sure it's medication related. Feeling just slightly dizzy almost like I'm stoned. I'll take the missed dose soon as I get home ... anyone else get really bad headaches???
Since Effexor affects your serotonin levels, yes, this would be a common side effect
Hit enter too soon lol
Yes, when I first started Effexor, the first week I had these headaches. They felt more like pressure and annoying vs very painful
Only way I can think to describe it
I take 225mg in the morning and 37.5mg in the evening, when I am on form with my tablets it's brilliant, if I miss a doses or 2 I notice a massive change, i all of a
Sudden go on a high, then I fall down, I am anxious, feel sick, angry with the world and the brain zaps and headaches are horrid!! Also I become very obbessive!
I struggle all the time and at times
It really hurts to struggle all the time!
How did I overcome these effects? I just made a point of NOT missing doses... :-)
+1 for dizziness and drastic mood change 24 hours after missing a dose.
Sometimes if I do not take my dose in the morning I am fine throughout the day. I will actually feel a small afternoon boost of energy.
If I do not take the dose during the evening and wait for the next morning then I have emotional dreams and wake up depressed. I have a much more difficult time keeping my thoughts positive and rational. My mind will pull me to more and more negative thoughts, then sort of spin out fairy tales of how my situation (whatever it may be that morning) will only get worse.
Does anyone have experience stopping this medication? My experience this morning is making me unnerved at how drastic the effects are... Thanks
I hate the side affects of missing a dosage but I doubt I will ever be off them
I had to stop Effexor when my diagnosis and medications changed for Bipolar ll disorder. I was taking the maximum dosage of 225mg/day and my doctor gave me a reducing schedule to use over a three week period. I had no problem at all with having any symptoms of discontinuation syndrome.
The key is to do it slowly as prescribed by your doctor or psych nurse.
I take 75mg daily (very low dose I know) but have been on this dose for 3 years now and it's enough to keep my panic attacks away. I take my dose every morning. Today was the first day ever I missed a dose, unexpectedly had to stay the night away so did not pack my meds. By early afternoon was feeling as others described "just not well" by late afternoon was full on nauseated after eating, a little while after that, was vomiting. Still feel very nauseated. And like I just need to vomit for relief :(
I finally returned home and took my missed dose. Shall see if it helps. I did think (as a previous member did) I was getting a virus until it dawned on me I missed it and did a web search and found this thread.
If this happens in one missed dose, and such a low one at that, it's going to be hell ever stopping Effexor altogether
I think im very late to this convo but I missed one dose today and was curious. Im on 225mg and have been for 10 years- works reasonably wellthough i have my wobbles. When i miss a dose i get the dizzy when you move your head, brain zaps and become really irratable and low in mood. Generally starts about 6 hrs after i miss a dose. I also routinely get whoosing in my head, crazy crazy vivid dreams and a rapid heart rate though thats probably because im unfit!! Anyone have any more unusual
Side effects whilst taking it normally? Do you find weight fluctuations effect the way your dose effects you?
Beck; you really have most covered we all react differently. I wish you would of said when you take it am or pm, aS THEY SAY IF YOU ARE TWO CLOSE TO TONIGHTS DOSE SKIP IT BUT IF YOU STILL HAVE 8 HOURS OR MORE IT WOULD BE SAFE TO TAKE AT LEAST PART OF YOUR DOSE WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS I KNOW ONE OTHER THINK IS IT MESSES WITH MY EYES AT TIMES IF MY DOSE IS TO FAR OFF AND ALSO I GET THOSE NASTY ZAPS THE FEEL LIKE ELECTRIC ZAPS IN YOUR HEAD AND THEY COME AND GO THEY DO NO DAMAGE BUT
really my friend we have to get you like a pill container many pharmacies or dollar stores have them for just over a buck and you fill it weekly that way you look at it and know you have taken it. ALSO, TRY AND TAKE IT ABOUT THE SAME TIME EACH DAY. IT REALLY IS IMPORTANT TO TAKE IT DAILY.
chuck1957 ps by the way I have not noticed any changes in my weight or really any of the weird dreams and such your asking about you really should talk to the doctor on these I have taken this for about 15 to 20 years and am good with it Chuck1957 also remember we are all different and because I don't and you do do not mean it does not happen. But please try and take it about the same time each day and you well notice a big difference. chuck.
I just found this while looking up if anyone else had symptoms after a missed dose. This is the only medication I've ever been on that I have such a strong reaction from missing a dose. I'm on 150 XR once a day. If I miss my dose which I always take in the AM , by the evening I begin feeling anxious, vivid dreams and horrible night sweats. By the next morning my mood goes downhill fast. I take my next dose but while I wait for that to work I fall into a depressive state and can become impulsive ( like almost quitting my job) and have sucicidal thoughts. I also take Wellbutrin 300 mg per day which if I miss my Effexor I miss that too. It's very scary how fast the effect is. Effexor is a strong drug.
Several people have mentioned "brain zaps." Can you elaborate a bit on this? I experience a weird weird pulsating ringing sound in my ears when I miss a dose (I have horrible tinnitus anyway, but this is different) Is this what you're referring to?
It's the worst feeling. The brain zap best described for me is like someone turned you off and back on again suddenly. Like when you blinked you missed an hour of time but you know you didn't.. absolutely horrid feeling. Anyone found any thing to help it whilst the meds are getting back into your system?
I have been taking 150mg of Effexor a day, and I missed a dose last night. The result is a very strange headache that hurts no matter how I move, a queasy stomach, and overall sense of feeling "unwell". I took my dose when I realized I could not function and realized why. I am waiting for it to kick in to see if it will help alleviate the side effects.
It prompted me to look online to see if this was a normal reaction to missing a dose. It's comforting--in a sense-- to know this is common and that it is a result of missed meds and not some virus I have picked up. This is really an awful feeling and I don't wish it on anyone.
How long did it take you to feel somewhat normal after taking the dose after the missed one? I missed mine last night. Within 12 hours of missing it I felt like crap. Just took it an hour ago and am wondering when I will start to feel better.
The very next day I could tell my panic and anxiety had calmed back now.
I never did follow upon this, so I will now. The flu-like symptoms, brain "whooshes" and general gross feelings were totally gone about 2 hours after I took my dose. Thank. God. It's not nice. I can't ever see myself being able to get off them after experiencing that. Ever.
