How long can the nebulizer solution be used passed the expiration date?
Some of my solution has an expiration date of July 2012, how long can I still use it? I know I won't finish it up this month.

Saw someone say they couldn't find the expiration date on the vial. Can't speak for all brands... But I have to hold mine up to the light and look at the very bottom seal on my vials to see the date. Just FYI in case anyone else needs to find it. :)
My boyfriend used albuterol solution 2 and 1/2 years passed the date it was prescribed and it worked fine. The solution was clear and kept in a dark place. We couldn't find the expiration date on the vial. I read several of these answers and that is what we went by. Thank You for all your answers!
Loses its potency. Will work for years expired though. I’ve used three year old Albuterol solution for my nebulizer and it’s been fine and worked. Just make sure it’s stored proper and still clear
Is it safe to use out dated albuterol sulfate nebulizer liquid
I just use some that was about 3 years old and it worked fine. I say go for it until you get an updated batch.
Just tonight I needed, after several years, to use some stored nebulizer Albuterol. The solution in the vial was clear; expiration date was 2009... 10 years. I felt much better after the treatment BUT noted diminished effects from the last time I used the stored medicine... one or two winters ago so I would surmise the Albuterol is slowly reaching the limits of its usefulness after the expiration date. Time to get some new I guess.
You have to be careful when using the albuterol sulfate nebulizer meds because if they are too out of date and you use them so much you will get double pneumonia I used some that was a few years out of date and had double pneumonia for a while. Just a heads up to be careful
Recently I had a bad cold and in need of additional help breathing in the middle of the night b/c my inhaler wasn’t giving relief & used albuterol sulfate 3ml + ipratropium Bromide 0.5mg solution. The vial was dated 04/11 (expired by 7+ years) and helped me.
Don't know
How long can I keep albuterol solution when it has expired?
I just used some that expired in 2003. Seemed to work.
I need this question answered
Albuterol solution can be used years past expiration date if 1) it has been stored at room temperature or colder in a dark place 2) it is clear and colorless.
The only thing is it may lose its potency, little by little. I have heard of people using it 5 years past expiration. I keep them stored away in case of emergency.
I was diagnosed asthmatic as an infant, my mom noticed I was turning purple and had a weak cry. I have been hospitalized for weeks and had to use nebulizer and inhaler daily as a child.
My asthma is a lot better now as an adult so I don't go to the doctor very often. I keep a box of albuterol solution for emergencies, barely past expiration date. Works just fine.
I would suggest you also keep an epi-pen if your asthma is bad. It can save your life in an emergency.
Thank you(!), Annette, for posting a rational response. Obviously the only problem with MOST meds is that they gradually lose potency, and the printed expiration date is not a magical transition point into badness -- newer meds are generally more potent; that is a reason ordering them sent through the mail can be a good idea, if you can get them from someplace that ships the product straight out from the assembly line. As you point out, discoloration is something to watch for, in meds as for vitamins and foods, and proper storage makes a lot more difference than calendar time. Even fairly new stuff can go off if it hasn't been stored properly, especially with regard to temperature and humidity. However, in any specific case under consideration, one always has a nagging suspicion that any particular item might be an exception to the general guidelines insofar as it might undergo some chemical transformation other than just reduction of potency.
I've never seen that happen, but it's always nice to find confirmation for whatever particular substance one is considering.
It is generally not recommended to use expired meds, however one could use the med since the expiry date mentions July 2012.
Best would be to call up the local pharmacy or contact the doc who would give you more accurate advice.
Please take care, best wishes!
I agree that medication should not be used after the expiry date.
In this particular case though, if the expiry date says "July 2012" it generally means 31 July 2012 as opposed to "1 July 2012". It would thus be safe to use up to 31 July 2012.
Thanks for the endorsement!
Thank you for your response. I will call the pharmacy later.
Pleasure! Take care.
