Hello i'm the father of a son diagnosed with paranoid delusions and taking currently abilify 15 mg once a day,my son is very high functioning before meds (some of his professors say he has a genius intellect) and is now complaining of sexual problems(no erection beside nocturnal ones) and intellectual problems he can't have any idea in his head .
He never heard voices nor had any visual hallucination but had psychosis .
The doctor seeing the stablization under 15 mg for more than one year after equivalent stablilization was obtained with risperdal+abilify ,is now considering lowering the dosage to a minimum dose .
At which dose of abilify my son could get back his intellect and his sex drive ?

PICCOLO7899; The problems your son are having and the fact he is in the level zone. It sounds like a good Idea to lower the ones he is on BUT AT the first sign of relapse stop the lowering or even go back up a bit. This really is a normal practice and the less of the medication also lowers the side effects. Being sedation, Lack of sex drive. Anyway myself I would try what the doctor is saying Dad and the thing is if problems start at any point bump the medications back up. And as my friend Sidekick said below there are many things your son could take that offset the sexual problems. Plus I know it helps to have such an understanding parent as yourself so he may say things to you that he is uncomfortable to say to the doctor. (some of his professors say he has a genius intellect) This is fantastic Dad and remember that these conditions by no means that your Son is crazy or will get worse it is great that you or he is seeking help. I think it is the stigna many people have on mental health we worry as parents that our kids may be labeled. Remember you have a lot to be proud of with this young man and don't worry about what anyone says. I am a firm believer in a chemical imbalance which affects the brain and problems like this happen. And with the supplement of the new medications help many people. Sorry, I can't think of the names but some of the men that changed the world with things we still use today And fantastic artist and such they have found that they suffered from a type of mental problems. The lucky thing now is they have the stuff to treat us with.

Thanks for your response i sent this question to some doctors at Maclean hospital at Harvard with no response .
One last thing at which dosage abilify lets people think is it 5 mg or less ?

Yeah these could definitely improve at lower doses. With the intellect thing, sometimes medications quiet our brains to normal speed and because of the difference, we think we’re moving much slower than we actually are. If his grades are being maintained, it’s not a real problem. It’s just subjective. With sexual side effects, that’s important to bring to a doctor. There a different medications that work for this but have different side effect profiles. I take Latuda and don’t experience any sexual side effects.
