I was taking 50mg Trazodone & stopped 4 days ago. I'm itchy, am experiencing nausea & dizziness. When will this end? I see people saying 3 - 10 hours, but it seems to be lasting way longer for me. Today will be my 5th day Trazodone free. Starting to get hives. When will these withdrawal symptoms end?

I have been completely off of trazodone for nearly two years. Although I never experienced itching or hives, the nausea actually lasted for months. With the help of my primary care doctor and the help of a nutritionist, I was able to reduce those symptoms somewhat but for the most part, I had to just be patient and try to keep a positive attitude. Hopefully, your symptoms will subside sooner than later. I know how difficult it is. If it's any help to you, I did eventually start to feel better, including emotionally and psychologically, and have not had any digestive problems in a long, long time. Hang in there.
P.S. I don't know how long you were on the trazodone but the length of time can make a big difference in what you experience after getting off. I was on the medication for about 2 years and I was also on a much higher dose - 200 mg. All of this is probably why it took me so long to get over all the withdrawal problems.
Im on day 6 of stopping 150mg trazodone.. feel spaced and very tired hoping this get a better deal soon . I read its out of your system 3 days this isn't true as I'm still feeling ill...
I was prescribed trazodone as an insomnia medication. I took it because for a full week, I couldn't sleep. It helped at first, but it turned out my real problem was a major magnesium deficiency. I've taken trazodone for a full month. It made my anxiety worse and my thoughts clouded. Trying to get off of it has been aweful, I never should have taken it. I just feel so distorted. I keep making dumb mistakes at my job. Thankfully I have a couple weeks off to recover-- I'll post back on this thread how long it takes me to feel better.
How are you recovering now from the withdrawal of trazadone? I was taking 100mg and dropped to 50mg for 5 days then experienced brain fog, feeling depressed, like a zombie, tired and achy. My doctor told me to go back to 100mg again and I did for the past 5 nights have been taking it and still feel terrible. I also take 400 mg of magnesium that helps with sleep and calming effect. How long did your withdrawal symptoms last?
It took me two months and I was able to completely recover!
Thank you Alymayk. I had to stop Trazodone 100mg abruptly 5 weeks ago. The withdrawals have sucked. Chest and back pain. Severe depression. Thank you for posting that it took 2 months that at least gives me some hope.
I had taken 50 mg Trazodone for 2 nights for early wake disorders, and due to it not correcting the problem while giving me some anxiety the following morning, I decided not to take it a third night. I was amazed that I could not fall sleep at all which had not been the previous problem! After 2 hours of unrest, I took the pill but sleep was poor to none all night. So I decided to go back to taking the 50 mg tablet on a 4th night; however, since I continue to have early wake while feeling bad the following morning/day which I did not have when not taking Trazodone, I am interested in tapering off this drug. I’m seeing a sleep specialist dr in a couple of weeks. Should I try to start cutting tablet and take 3/4 tablet for 4 days (the same number of days I took the 50 mg) and reduce by 1/4 tablet every 4 days until off o should I wait until I see the dr and see what he suggests? Please give me feedback on this. Thanks!
did it cause any breathing problems for you? or tension or jaw headaches, tingling or numbness? i am quitting and desperate for info, my doc is clueless
It caused all sorts of problems for me. The most notable for me though was shaking, headache, foggyness, more extreme insomnia, and anxiety. Breathing problems came with the anxiety, and I did feel numbness mostly throughout my head. As for tension or jaw headaches, I don’t remember having those as intensely, but I did have headaches. The side effects were more intense when I cut the regular dose in half. I just dealt with the aweful sife effects for about a week or two. The I just kept halving the dose until I felt like I could stop. Once I was completely off, I still had a lot of trouble for a couple weeks. But after that I completely recovered and am now able to pursue a masters degree, now that I can finally think more clearly.
thanks for the reply, any hyperventilating? how did you totally quit? I only took it for less 2 months 50mg for sleeping, doctors say can be from this. I am seeing all kinds of specialists and i still wonder if its from this. So I tapered rapidly over past couple weeks to about 1/3 pf 5-mg, even when i took that i could feel it in my head was so strange..so i totally stopped a week now, i am weak as hell and parts of my body are going weak like back of my leg my arm, palms going numb..how did you totally taper off? so for all the questions, i am just looking for insight
Can you please explain numbness in the head feeling ? I had only taken it for 8 days 50mg and the doctor said it be okay to just stop taking it. 3 days later I had a terrible ten days of withdrawals, and now 5 weeks later I still have numb head feeling along with tension in my teeth and tension headaches above my cheek bone. I dont know how long it will go on for. I want peace and out of this. None of these symptoms were here before the drug. Feels like air stuck in my head sometimes and comes in waves throughout the day.
After being on Trazadone for 15 years, I went off last week. Long story, but was given it for sleep. Usually only took a 1/2 of a 50mg pill each night... but when I forgot I would suddenly wake up "startled" within 1-3 hours of falling asleep so I knew I was hooked.
It took a good 7 days, but the first 3 were the worst... sleep was in 1 hour increments and depression set in... not terrible but "dark". After 5 days sleep was much better to almost normal... and after 7 days my dark mood lifted.
Hang in there and stay with it... maybe pick an easy week.
Its been one week since I stop taking 25 mg for sleep. I took it for half a year and I hate the zombie I became. I hate the windrawls and depression.
I posted this last year. It turned out that I am allergic to trazodone. I needed emergency help. I developed edema in my head and face. My mouth was drooping to one side and I was having sharp pains in my head and face. I had hives all over my body and couldn't breathe well.
I was just prescribed Trazodone for sleep. 50mg. I have only taken it 3 days. Will I have withdrawal symptoms? I do not like any of the side effects that I have experienced in this short time.
I took Trazodone, 50 mg, for 19 years and I am trying to get off them. I cut
back to half a pill for 6 weeks. Now I am not taking them and can only sleep 30 to an hour a night. I hate it! It’s been 6 days since being off. I pray this will be over soon, but I am not having any other side effects.
I was forced to stop taking trazodone about two and a half weeks ago. I was on 25 milligrams the doctor upped me to 50.mg. She told me to take two of the 25 milligrams That i still had until they were finished and then take one of the 50 milligrams each night after that. I forgot and I started taking two of the 50 milligrams. I made a mistake I ran out more quickly than I should have. Now I am going through severe mental disorientation.
Trazodone is very hard to quit once you start I am now 16 started trazodone 50 mg once per night every day since then. It even said if you quit just suddenly you will experience very bad side effects. I have tried to quit or have accidentally ran out and could not fill the pills (I ran out the day before) that day and I literally could not sleep my heart would race, my mind was racing, sweating, it was horrible I recommended you cut it down little by little each day or ask a real doctor on how to quit because its very hard to quit any kind of sleeping medication once you start because your body is so used to getting whatever is in that type of medicine like trazodone. I was given trazodone for anxiety and sleeplessness and it helps a lot but I do not recommend anyone starting this medicine because once you start its very hard to quit but not impossible but I don't plan to start quitting any time soon but Good luck if you want to try.
Also to answer the question on how long it last I really have no idea sorry but I'm guessing it depends on how much and for how long you took the medicine for and if your taking any other medicines with it. (2-3 weeks maybe?)
I dropped from 50 to 25 mg of trazodone and experienced all sorts of unpleasant side effects, including anxiety, ringing in the ears, nauseousness, mild insomnia, and physical pain. I had to resume 50 mg, and taper off even slower. Go to the hospital if you get a fever above 103, or you haven't slept or eaten in over 3 days.
My withdrawal symptoms last for about 2-3 weeks with every drop I make, but they are mild and more manageable with a slower decrease.
Hello, I had been taking 25mg of Trazodone for the last 6 months each night for sleep and just went off of it with no taper. It has been a week for me and the occasional nausea is still here slightly and the brain fog, fatigue, and mental disorientation is hanging around too. It seems to be slightly improving each day. But I am hoping this next week I see more relief from symptoms. I don't recommend the non taper approach of course, but thought I'd share my experience so far. I'd be curious how long it was til your symptoms were gone. Hope all is well.
I hope you had a better experience than I did.
I became allergic to it and suffered terribly from it. My former psychiatrist and my medical doctor worked together to get me well and overcome the reaction I had from those pills.
Did you get tension like headaches?
Hello, I've been prescribed trazodone for about 3 weeks now. My psychiatrist told me to cut the dose to 50 mg then 100. It worked great for about a week but now I want off of. My depression has worsened and I suddenly awake every night and can not put myself back to sleep. I've also experienced unclear thinking in simple everyday tasks. I emailed my doctor and he told me to cut to 25 mg for 7 days.
I don't know where you heard that, its going to take you maybe a few weeks. You should not have just stopped it. Its dangerous to stop some meds abruptly. The best thing to do is to cut them in half for about a week first. Have you tried an antihistamine for your symptoms.

My mouth was drooping to one side and I was having sharp pains in my head and face. I had hives all over my body and couldn't breathe well. I didn't just stop taking it. I was tapered and followed dr's orders.
i have had breathing problems as well, but they say it cant be from this.. did you have tension in jaw an temples? and tingling and numbness by chance?
