What is Ohtuvayre?

Ohtuvayre (ensifentrine) is an inhaled dual phosphodiesterase treatment that may be used to improve symptoms and reduce the number of flare ups of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in adults. It must be used with a nebulizer and it is not intended as a rescue treatment to relieve sudden breathing problems.

Ohtuvayre has combined bronchodilator and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory actions and works by inhibiting two enzymes, phosphodiesterase 3 (PDE3) and phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) that are highly expressed in the smooth muscle of the lungs. These enzymes hydrolyze (break down) cyclic AMP, which is an important cellular messenger for many different physiological processes, including bronchial smooth muscle relaxation and blocking substances that contribute to inflammation. Decreasing PDE3 activity relaxes airway muscles and prevents symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Decreasing PDE4 activity helps to decrease inflammation in the lungs, which can lead to breathing problems.

Ohtuvayre was FDA-approved on 26 June 2024.
