Tegretol (Tegratol) is used in the treatment of seizure disorders, including certain types of epilepsy. Tegretol (Tegratol) is also used to treat severe pain of the jaw or cheek caused by a facial nerve problem (trigeminal neuralgia). In addition, some doctors use Tegretol (Tegratol) to treat alcohol withdrawal, cocaine addiction, and emotional disorders such as depression and abnormally aggressive behavior. Tegretol (Tegratol) is also used to treat migraine headache and "restless legs. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Tegretol (Tegratol) is an anticonvulsant. It works to control seizures by blocking certain nerve impulses in the brain. Tegretol (Tegratol) works to treat trigeminal neuralgia by altering nerve impulses in certain facial nerves, which relieves pain.
Tegretol (Tegratol) side effects include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, or unsteadiness. Tell your doctor if any of the following side effects occur: chest pain, swelling of the ankles/feet, trouble breathing, fatigue, fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, persistent or severe headache, fainting, trouble urinating, change in the amount of urine, decreased sexual ability, unusual eye movements (nystagmus), vision changes, hearing problems, mental/mood changes, pain/redness/swelling of the arms or legs, numbness/tingling of the hands/feet, sun sensitivity, joint pain or hair loss.
