Reason for the Shortage
    • Baxter stated they had increased demand for the product.[1]
    • BBraun discontinued 70% dextrose in 1,000 mL glass bottles. The 70% dextrose 2,000 mL bags are available.[2]
    • Hospira had product on shortage due to increased demand.[3]

Implications for Patient Care

    • Solutions of 70% dextrose are used to compound a variety items including specialized solutions for neonatal or pediatric patients and total parenteral nutrition (TPN).[4]

Safety

    • Clinicians must use care if using another strength of dextrose injection for compounding (such as 50% dextrose injection). Ensure compounding software is updated prior to using a different strength.

Alternative Agents & Management

    • Clinicians should reserve remaining supplies of 70% dextrose for their most critical patients.
    • Consider using premixed total parenteral nutrition solutions if appropriate.
