Initial dose: 1.5 to 5.0 mL IV per varix up to a maximum of 20 mL per treatment session

Submucosal injections are not recommended.

Follow-up injections to obliterate the varix should be administered at one week, six weeks, three months, and six months as needed.
Ethanolamine oleate has no effect upon portal hypertension, the cause of esophageal varices. Recanalization and collateralization may occur, necessitating reinjection.
The maximum volume per session should not be exceeded to avoid possible anaphylaxis and severe necrosis.
