I have been taking 10 mg of Paxil for quite a number of years. The doctor just informed me that she wants me to switch to 10 mg of Trintellix. Has anyone switched between the two? And if so did you still have all the same side effects that they list about this medication? I'm really leery to switch because of the side effects. Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated

My doctor put me on 10 mg Paxil this July 2019. I was having problems with menopause systems. Night sweats, little to no sleep, hot flashes during the day, outburst of crying, extremely emotional issues, weight gain of 30 lbs in 5 months, brain fog, forgetfulness, not able to concentrate and just for a lack of words, crazed feeling. I went back in mid November because I was having problems on paxil. I have gained 10 lbs since July. I'm tired a lot. I never have the energy or want to get up and do stuff. I was getting very depressed on the paxil. Also I found out that it caused sexual issues for me, and I am female. No desire and unable to organism. Please let me know if anyone else has encountered this issue, and does Trintellix do the same. The reviews say no.
So the doctor wants me to try Trintellix 10 mg. After reading all the posts I am thinking maybe I should cut it in half and take 5 mg for a while at first. Have been hesitant to switch. So I recently stopped the paxil to get it out of my system to start the new med. Oh boy! I almost had a nervous breakdown. Constant crying, couldn't get out of bed. Had zero energy, felt very frazzled and very depressed. It has gotten much better after a week.
I've been on Paxil OVER 20 years! I went from 20mg to 40mg and it had gotten where it wasn't helping anymore. I have gained ungodly amounts of weight but wasn't sure if it was the Paxil or something else... starting to think it was the Paxil. I asked to be switched to Trintellix. My Dr had 5mg samples so this is my 1st week on it. I can say that I feel better. The nausea is irritating but I just eat something before taking it and am ok. It does make me sleepy but Paxil did too when I 1st started taking it. My advice is to give it a go and see how you feel on it.
Hi chamby I also am taking paxil but my dr wants me to switch to trintellix i made the switch and my panic attacks are starting up again and i do get one of the side effects dizziness but every person is different
You posted your question a few months ago. Its March 8th today. Been having problems with paxil after 12 years of taking it. Doc prescribed the trintellix like you. How are you doing now? I have agoraphobia, OCD, and depression and many of paxil side effects. I'm scared to death to start. Hope you get this message and respond as I'm starting to chicken out
Thanks,
Pam
I have taken Paxil CR 25mg for probably 15 years. My doctor backed me off to the 12.5 CR after I did the cheek swab and found out Paxil is not recommended for my DNA.
I just started taking the Trintellix 10mg. I’m on day 3 and have terrible body aches, headaches and now nausea. I am praying for this to get better as the Paxil causes me to gain so much weight and also caused terrible sweating. I was SO HOT all the time that my family would feeeze in the house with me. After being off the Paxil for 3 days, that is all gone. I’ve thought about cutting my dosage down to 5mg and gradually work up to the 10mg. I also take Seroquel at night.
I am on Trintellix for the second time (I stopped CT, I don't recommend that), I started at 10 mg which was ok, went to 20 mg for 5 months, worked great for my ADD, GAD and depression. I am back on it at 10 mg for a bit then will go to 20 again. It takes up to a month to totally feel the difference and also most side effects subside by then. The jump from 10 to 20 mg also has some side effects a bit, they too subside soon after. This has been the best working one for me than Paxil which I tool years ago.
I take Trintellix and I love it. After increasing to 20mg, I got terrible constipation. But now, back at 10mgs, it is working well and I have no side effects and feel great!
Hello Chamby89. I've been on Paxil for years. And it seems like I have some similar senerios as the people on here do - started taking it ... it first worked ... then it started having the opposite effect years later.
Like you I'm now trying Trintellix - on my second day. It is wiping me out on 10mg. So I'm going to back off to 5mg for a few weeks and then go back up to 10 (unless 5mg works - then I'll stay there).
I'm going to take a chance with this because I can already feel it working a little besides the initial tiredness (although it's different with everyone on when it does take effect - I've heard a couple weeks or so).
I don't know if you ended up taking it. But if you did how did it work for you ?
I switched from paxil 30 to trintellix, 13 days ago. I wanted to try this new med so my doctor agreed. I tolerate meds good for the most part so I wasn't too worried about the side effects. But boy was I wrong! The nausea was awful. It started on day 3 and just eased off around day 10. I started taking it at night so could sleep during the worst part of it. I'm on day 13 right now, I feel pretty good with more energy and my anxiety is really low. I get waves of nausea that last about 1-5 minutes but I can deal with that compared to how it was last week (Lasted for 8 to 10 hours straight). I feel minimal depression and very low anxiety which was about the same as I did with Paxil. I wanted to "lift the fog" that I sometimes feel, along with jumbled up thoughts that lead to anxiety, that's why I am trying Trintellix. I have noticed a very slight improvement in this. I hope it continues to get better. Hope this helps... good luck... to the both of us!!!
Hi I was happy to read someonecswitched from Paxil to Trintellix.. I am thinking of doing it. I've been on 10 mg Paxil for over 20 years. Feel like I'm in a fog but it helped so much with my anxiety a long time ago I just kept with it. I feel like I could do better. I'm blah and my thoughts can be screwy too as you mentioned. How are you doing now with it?
Hi! I've also been on Paxil for 12 plus years for panic attacks. I recently had a baby a year ago and it seems as though my anxiety is just not managed the same. I'm on 40mg of Paxil. My new physician ( original physician who prescribed me Paxil passed away last year) suggested Trintellix. Now I'm a nurse and I know I should probably be able to handle things better but I'm sooooo scared to change meds. But I'm gonna do 5mg of trintellix with 20mg of Paxil for 2 weeks then 10 mg of trintellix. I hope I get relief. I have been reading some really positive reviews about this drug. And it wouldn't be a bad thing to shed the pounds Paxil put on me. I transition tomorrow!
Today is March 8, 2019. I was prescribed trintellix today after 12 years of paxil. I had many side effects from paxil but was put on the time released and a bit stronger and my issues went out of control. So here I am scared to death to start trintillex. How are you doing since you posted?
Pam
Chamby; Just as WildcatVet, Has said if you read the side effects on any of the ones she listed for you and most may get from 1 to 3 of all the side effects but they normally go away you really should not even worry about them. Here is a copy and past of the ones you are most worried about and really they are fairly low as far as Vomiting.(Very common (10% or more): Nausea (up to 32%), diarrhea (up to 10%)
Common (1% to 10%): Dry mouth, constipation, vomiting, flatulence
Frequency not reported: Dyspepsia)) SEE of all the people in the trials Vomiting was only from 1 to 10% which is very low but nausea is a up to 32% These all came off of Drugs.com And many times you can relieve these with some ginger root, or ginger ail and some crackers, Anyway try not to focus on side effects. And just follow the directions. They have had some pretty good luck with these
Thanks chuck1957. Do you take this medication?
Chambe; I have not at least at this point, But I try and Keep up on all the newer medications to help others and to know more about them in case my status changes and I may need to change at this point I'm taking Effexor, and a Benzo to control my imbalance and seems to be doing okay. At this point, you are in the hardest part of this condition and that is finding the right medication or medications that control your balance as well as can be. And boy does that take a lot of patients and ill feelings etc. As they say been there and done that. Not easy just keep the faith and do the best you can, You well find the right combination or medicine that well help you too!!! stay Positive avoid negative post and people and keep the faith. Chuck
I have been taking a combination of Paxil and klonopin for years but just seems like the depressive side has worsened. I was just being treated for panic attacks and anxiety but now I have some "blue" days that's why the doctor wants me to switch. I haven't tried the trintellix yet,,, still leary about it.
Chamby; One thing keeps eating at me if you have been on Paxil and it has helped for quite some time If I'm being understanding you right you are only taking 10mg which for so many people that would be a very low dose. If you have not started the new one ask the doctor about Increasing the dose of the Paxil for depression along with panic attacks the normal dose is 20 to 40mg tablets per day so this would be a good option also.
Hi Chamby, did you ever make the switch? I too have been on Paxil 10mg for 20 years and feel I could do better. I'm afraid to mostlybecause I can function ok and don't want to be worse if I switch. I know someone who went off Paxil and went back on and it didn't work at all anymore. Thanks
I have been taking Paxil for about 9 years and my depression got bad I also take Klonopin. Dr recently switched from Paxil to Trintellix. I was eager to feel better and to not dissspoint I feel great other than what feels like fuzzy ringing in my ears. I remain hopeful during this transition period - I have been on 10 mg of Trintellix for a week now. Anyone else have this going on? And I have to add I feel blessed to have this platform where I don’t feel alone in this leap of faith
Hi, Chamby! Why does your doctor want you to switch? Is the Paxil no longer working well for you?
No one has ALL the side effects of any given antidepressant; only about 10% of users have 1, 2, or 3. Trintellix has very recently come to market and is considered much more neutral than other available products.
Best wishes and good luck!
Thanks Wildcat!!! She wants me to switch because the Paxil doesn't seem to be working as well as it used to. My anxiety and depression seem to be getting worse and she said Paxil is such an old drug and trintellix is newer and she thinks more effective. I haven't switched yet because I'm scared of all the negative side affects I've read. The scariest part is the severe vomitting and diarrhea everyone talks about so I'm not sure if I want to experience that.
Look at all the *horrible* side effects of Paxil! Or Lexapro, Effexor, Zoloft, Wellbutrin, Celexa, etc., etc., etc.
Remember you only hear from the small percentage of people who have side effects, not from the millions of patients who are taking their medications and living a happy, fulfilled life.
Just saying don't be afraid of something you haven't tried. Trintellix is more effective with fewer side effects than the other older antidepressants and worse case, if you're one of the unlucky few who experience a side effect, stop taking it. Or manage it with simple home/OTC remedies for a few days to a week or two.
Good luck, WC.
Thanks so much for the advice. I think I will try it this weekend when I'm not babysitting and don't have to worry about getting sick or not

The trintellix (or the generic for it) gave me awful headaches. The day or so after i went off of it my headaches stopped. I'm trying paxil again. Worked for me years ago for a long time.
@Cathy Comerford: There is not a generic for Trintellix.
Hi! I switched a while ago. Trintellix is amazing, side effects were there for a while, but Tums and Advil did the trick. I personally never got diarrhea or vomiting from it at all. I did get scratchy spots, nausea, and mild headaches, but not all at once and none were too bad. Hopefully it will be like this for you, it really is a good one!
