Has lamictal caused anybody a decreased libido?

I am a 34 year old woman with no sex drive. The only time I've had one was when I wasn't on lamictal. I was able to keep my bipolar in check with diet and exercise during that time period. I've never seen the literature that says it increases sex drive, but it seems that is probably false in most cases.
Another woman stated that she experiences incredibly intense orgasms, but finds no pleasure in sex or being touched at all. I'm in the same boat. It's disconcerting. I haven't been able to find any solutions to the lack of libido. I need to talk to my doctor, but there's the possibility they're of the belief that it "increases" libido.
I appreciate this thread because it shows me that I'm not the only one having this issue.

I know it’s an old question but I see other people are still responding in 2020 so I thought I’d share my experience as well. I’m a 28 yr old female w bipolar 2, I’m on lamotrigine ( generic brand lamictal). I take 150 mg every night before bed, I’ve been taking it for 2 years now. This drug has completely changed my life for the better. I feel like the little mermaid but instead of losing my voice, I’m the mermaid who asks for mental stability and unknowingly ends up having to give up my libido to attain it. LOL
I used to be hypersexual and it would get me in a lot of trouble/ weird situations. I see losing my libido as a benefit but my girlfriend suffers because of this. The study that says this drug increases it must have been from a very small pool of people or it wasn't a very thorough study overall. My lack of sex drive is only frustrating because it makes my partner sad. I’m completely content w my low libido the way it is though. For me, it is totally worth.

I am a 24 year old female and I've been on Lamictal now for close to 4 years. I'm now on 300mg for bipolar. I have ruled EVERYTHING else out. It is the only medication I have been on consistently since my sex drive disappeared and I even went and got blood work done to see if something was wrong with my hormones or anything else. Everything was fine! I have already talked to my doctor about this and she insisted it is supposed to increase my libido but I don't think she can accept that these studies done with small amounts of people can't predict everything that will happen within the entire POPULATION. Just take a look at all of the different threads about this same issue across the internet. It's definitely a problem. I asked my doctor to decrease my amount and she increased it. I'm about to just find a new doctor and just get off of it myself and see what happens.

Like others I see this post is really old but reading all your responses makes me feel better in the sense that I’m not alone. I take Lamictal for seizures as well. 100mg in the morning, 50mg midday and 100mg at bedtime. I’ve been on it for probably a year and a half. And it works really well for me with the least amount of side effects.
But my sex drive is completely gone. For awhile I just thought it was me. Luckily my boyfriend is understanding now but I feel like a bad girlfriend. I’ve tried talking to my neurologist but she says it should increase my libido.

Has anyone had any experience coming off of it and getting their drive back?

I’ve been talking lamictal for about 5-10 years. My sex drive has gone down completely, it’s becoming an issue with my wife. She thinks I’m not into her. I love her with all my heart and for her to think that, it’s the worst feeling in the world. This may sound selfish but I’m glad I’m not the only one. This posts took a big load off my shoulders. By the way I take 600mil.

I have been on lamictal for almost 2 months. When I was starting out, and I got up to 100mg, I had increased sex drive, then when I got to 200mg I had decreased sex drive.

My sex drive also decreased over the last 2 years which corresponded with my starting lamotrigine. I was wondering if anyone experienced their libido returning if lamotrigine was stopped. It's something I'm considering now the lack of sex drive and weak erections is causing relationship problems, very distressing

Wanted to jump on the bandwagon here and say I’m a 40 year old female with bi-polar II. Have been in therapy & psychiatric care over the course of 20 years and lamictal has been the only thing that has ever truly helped with my agitated mood swings and I’ve been on it for maybe 4 months now. I have been experiencing very intense orgasms, as opposed to the inability to orgasm like I experienced with other meds. However, I have absolutely not one ounce of libido, no feelings of pleasure in being touched or in actual sexual acts, to the point where I sometimes find my partner, or the idea of sexual acts, repulsive. I previously had no issues here so it’s quite a drastic change. I just don’t ever think about sex or anything related to sex whatsoever. Really bummed out about it because this med helps so much in ways I haven’t been able to find otherwise. Thought about asking to add Wellbutrin but I’m not sure it’ll matter. :(

Old thread but I was seeking answers despite the literature saying it increases libido so maybe this will help someone else.. I'm 26, female, taking 150mg lamotrigine for bipolar II and have noticed a definite decrease in libido initially that has persisted and worsened over time. I spoke to my doctor initially, she said it is likely that the higher libido I experienced before was part of elevated episodes I was having and suggested maybe what I am experiencing now is closer to 'normal'. I used to have a really wild and active sex life now I'm not really bothered. Which I wouldn't care about of I was single but my boyfriend is finding it really challenging :(

No if anything it has increased my sex drive.

marzboy777 here. I'm not a member of this group because I don't take Lamictal--although I DID take the med from 2005 to around 2009. My experience was that--far from decreasing my libido--Lamictal actually increased my sex-drive... almost, if it may be believed, to the point of being somewhat of a bother: I was almost always "hot to trot".
If anyone has had a similar experience, do let me know. Thanx and God bless.

Hello everyone, I have been taking Lamictal in combination with Wellbutrin for the last 3 years and I have been really well with this scheme. However, I have totally lost my sexual drive, I don't have any desire to have sex and I can't get an erection. This has cause me a lot of troubles with my girlfriend.

I'm quite sure it's Lamictal but I have no idea what medication to use instead. Some months ago I was just with 100 mg of Lamictal and did just "well", some time ago I increased to 150 mg of Lamictal and added 150 of Wellbturin and totally lost my libid.

It's weird because literature says Lamictal has really low sexual side effects.

Any ideas/comments? Thanks a lot
