How often can you take Nurtec ODT?

Nurtec ODT can be taken once daily to treat acute (sudden) migraine pain or every other day to help prevent migraine headaches. The maximum dose is 75 mg per day. It is not known if it is safe to take more than 18 doses of Nurtec ODT in a 30-day period.

When used for treatment, Nurtec ODT (orally disintegrating tablets) can be taken as soon as symptoms of an acute migraine attack start. It can help stop headache pain and other symptoms like nausea and light or sound sensitivity. Relief for migraine pain and a return to normal activities typically occurs within one to two hours.

Nurtec ODT (rimegepant) is a prescription medicine approved for migraine headaches in adults. It is used for the treatment of acute migraine attacks (with or without aura) and for the preventive treatment of episodic migraine. It is an oral medicine placed on or under your tongue to dissolve. It is not known if Nurtec ODT is safe and effective in children.

Can I take Nurtec ODT every day?

The maximum dose of Nurtec ODT in a 24-hour period is 75 mg (one tablet). It is not known if you can take more than 18 doses in a 30-day period.

If you find that taking Nurtec ODT to treat sudden migraine headache pain is not working, speak with your healthcare provider who may recommend using Nurtec ODT for migraine prevention. Your doctor may prescribe Nurtec ODT to be taken every other day to help prevent your migraine attacks.

There are drug interactions with Nurtec ODT that may affect if you can take this medicine or may change how often you can take it. Before you start taking Nurtec ODT, be sure to let your healthcare provider and pharmacist know which medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins, and herbal or dietary supplements.

Talk to your healthcare provider and have them check for drug interactions if you take other medications. Drugs that are known as CYP3A4 enzyme inhibitors or inducers, and potent inhibitors of P-gp can lead to significant drug interactions.

Can I take Nurtec ODT with migraine prevention medicine?

Nurtec ODT for treatment of an acute migraine headache can be taken along with preventive medications as long as the preventive medication is NOT another calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist. If you are not sure what drug class your migraine medicines belong to, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

In studies looking at treatment of acute migraine, about 14% of patients were on preventive medicines. Rescue medications for uncontrolled pain, like NSAIDs, acetaminophen, and/or an antinausea medication were allowed 2 hours after the initial treatment, when needed. Ask your doctor what other medicines you can take with Nurtec ODT for breakthrough migraine pain.

Nurtec ODT can also be used to prevent migraine headaches, so if you are experiencing breakthrough migraine headaches on your current treatment, speak to your doctor, as there may be other alternatives.

How should I take and store Nurtec ODT?

  1. Wash and dry your hands before opening the blister pack
  2. Peel back the foil covering of one blister and gently remove the Nurtec ODT tablet. Do not push it through the foil
  3. Remove the tablet and place it on or under the tongue. The tablet will dissolve and no water or other drink is needed
  4. Take Nurtec ODT immediately after opening the blister pack. Do not store it outside the blister pack for future use.
