Norfloxacin ophthalmic Pregnancy Warnings

Norfloxacin ophthalmic has been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. Animal data have revealed evidence of embryolethality. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Cartilage damage and arthropathies have been reported in immature animals giving rise to concern over effects on fetal bone formation. Norfloxacin ophthalmic is only recommended for use during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk.

There are no data on the excretion of norfloxacin ophthalmic into human milk. The manufacturer recommends that due to the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, a decision should be made to discontinue the drug or to discontinue nursing, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
