Usual Adult Dose for Asthma - Maintenance

4.7 mg/kg orally every 8 hours.

Usual Pediatric Dose for Asthma - Maintenance

Child 1-9 years: 6.2 mg/kg orally every 6 hours.

Child 9-16 years: 4.7 mg/kg orally every 6 hours.

Liver Dose Adjustments

A higher incidence of toxic effects, including seizures, are seen in cirrhosis and acute hepatitis. Monitor plasma levels closely with dose adjustments as necessary.

Dose Adjustments

Sustained-action formulations may be substituted if total daily maintenance dose is 800 mg or 1200 mg. One sustained-action tablet every 12 hours may be used.

Precautions

Higher incidence of toxicity in cirrhosis patients. Cautious dosage adjustments are advised with serum level monitoring.

Dialysis

Oxtriphylline (theophylline) is removed by hemodialysis, therefore, doses should e given after dialysis sessions. Peritoneal dialysis does not contribute to the removal of theophylline.
